A former Hamilton man has been killed in a motorcycle accident in Bali.

David Bruce Tyrie, 38, died in Denpasar at 4am local time last Friday (8am New Zealand time).

His family, many of whom live in Hamilton, say details about his death are still sketchy and it is unclear whether anyone else was involved.
Younger sister Maryann Tyrie said the family, originally from Opotiki, was reeling at the news of his death.

"We're not coping very well, we just really need him home, that's the struggle. (He and I) were extremely close. There's only a year between us."

Mr Tyrie a former boarder at St Paul's Collegiate School in Hamilton worked on fishing boats since leaving school, initially in Whakatane, then around New Zealand after earning his skipper's ticket.

He had been based in South Africa for six months of the year since May last year, spending the other six months in Bali, hiring out scooters.

"He was quite an industrious young fella. David is passionate about surfing and that's what first attracted him to Bali," Miss Tyrie said.

He was coming to the end of his time on the Indonesian island, and was due to head back to the fishing trawler in South Africa, where he worked as second mate.

And the point is?

Why does this, undoubtedly sad, event warrant special mention on the Bali forum?

Is it because we are now going to list individually all accidental deaths on the roads here in Bali? If so I've got to say the forum will lose it's "edgy" feel when wedged in between 250+/month obituaries. But on the plus side my 85 year old mother-in-law will love it as those are her favourite reads.

Or is it to mourn the sad loss of a second mate on a fishing boat? Again my mother-in-law will love it as she eats fish.

Or is it only because the guy was western?

If so then shame on you! What makes him one bit more interesting or newsworthy than the other 250+/month that die senselessly on Bali's roads?

Because he's a Kiwi, we're more important than everyone else. :icon_lol:

Seriously though it sounds like this guy was drunk, 4am on a friday morning, theres usually no one on the road at that time.

Oh! Of course, what was I thinking - a group of people named after a small brown fruit are the pinnacle of achievement on this sad planet and the loss of even one of them is a cause for (inter)national mourning.:icon_cry:

Better a fruit than a fruit cake :icon_e_wink:.

Actually the fruit and the people were named after the bird. A bird that I can't say I've ever seen.

Why is that disgusting? People die all the time and everywhere - 300,000 times a day - that's what we do.

Really Andrew - when sister walks away from the station type PORN:icon_wink:

Why is what Markit said disgusting? Why do we never hear about Indonesians on the roads? Only western??

Everybody dies and its unfair to just acknowledge a "bules" death. Some peoples time is up before the other..

The post is automatic as far as I know. The little ferret in the computer sees the word "Bali" in the headline and posts it on the forum. So there is no reason to get hot under the collar with the site admins. Everybody seems to be overdosing on self-righteous pills these days.

I don't mind these posts, from my experience some of the worst drivers in Bali are foreigners so its a little reminder to the clowns out there that think they can drive like the local lunatics because the rules or lack there of allow them to.

This is primarily a site for Expats in Bali. I personally know of several prominent expats who've left the building "recently". I guess that most people don't really need to know about them but for those who knew them, it might be "news". I see nothing wrong in disseminating news like that.

I never met David Tyrie, but his tragic death is a reminder of how suddenly things can go badly wrong in life (including on Bali).
I feel that insensitive comments like those of Mr Markit are inexcusable, irresponsible and just plain sick.

Some "recent" leavers:

Andy Toth (famous American musicologist and long-term resident)
Carey Smoot (world famous architect)
"Welsh Jimmy" from Jimmy's Bar in Sanur
"Mr Coffee & Silver: from Ubud (jazz officianodo and antique collector)

If I remember correctly Johnny you've also left the forum several times and come back, so to speak, a new man:icon_wink:

Maybe it's my naturally gentle sensitivity but are you trying to say that these worthy and "prominent" expats have left because of yours truly?

Fecking Wonderful!! If so - didn't know I had that kind of reach. Wow! Now I am impressed with myself (wasn't too bad before, some might say).

By the way have you noticed that the closer we each get to that black door the more "tragic" it becomes?

Maybe it's just me but as I have just come back from the funeral of the "tragic" death of an 83 year old woman that survived 2 husbands, had 4 kids and numerous grand kids, had a long and busy life and career. I have to ask why was this or any other death of someone over 30 tragic?

I repeat, it's what we do.

If this comes as such a shock to you and your mimosa-like "prominent" friends that they seriously feel driven to leave the forum then all I can say is don't let the door hit you in the ass as you go! Have not noticed any deep comments from these worthies either - Johnny, I usually like yours though, you'll be glad to know.

Your gentle and sensitive Markit

Hi Markit, I think you've got it wrong here! Johnny's leavers have recently died. I don't think you were in involved in the deaths.
