A former Hamilton man has been killed in a motorcycle accident in Bali.
David Bruce Tyrie, 38, died in Denpasar at 4am local time last Friday (8am New Zealand time).
His family, many of whom live in Hamilton, say details about his death are still sketchy and it is unclear whether anyone else was involved.
Younger sister Maryann Tyrie said the family, originally from Opotiki, was reeling at the news of his death.
"We're not coping very well, we just really need him home, that's the struggle. (He and I) were extremely close. There's only a year between us."
Mr Tyrie a former boarder at St Paul's Collegiate School in Hamilton worked on fishing boats since leaving school, initially in Whakatane, then around New Zealand after earning his skipper's ticket.
He had been based in South Africa for six months of the year since May last year, spending the other six months in Bali, hiring out scooters.
"He was quite an industrious young fella. David is passionate about surfing and that's what first attracted him to Bali," Miss Tyrie said.
He was coming to the end of his time on the Indonesian island, and was due to head back to the fishing trawler in South Africa, where he worked as second mate.
