    Books

Just read two very interesting books involving Bali in the 1930's. Our Hotel in Bali: How two young Americans made a dream come true; a story of the 1930s. By Louise Koke. Louise and her husband built a hotel on Kuta beach before anything was there. Had to leave it all right before...

    Almost abducted in Bali

Up until I read this I was only mildly derisive of this stupid woman and her "experience" but this damned near made me lose my cookies all over the table. My gag moment was "I was in Bali, the final destination in Eat Pray Love."

Another question on schools for a newbie

What about home schooling? How hard is it to get teaching materials for parents to home school their children? My Balinese son-in-law seems very knowledgeable on many things and he talks about hating school and even making his teachers cry and quit. I don't understand the high school system...

Small Package from USA Stuck in Customs Black Hole

Markit, yes, your posts are usually crass but I love reading your posts! You keep it interesting! After reading posts on this forum, what sane person is going to expect anything else? Per one of your recent postings, I was surprised to learn you were from the States! Someday I'd love to meet...

    Steiner Families

Shoggard, you might be hitting the nail on the head on the "daughter breaking free of the nest" thing. They did live with us for a time when first coming back to US. They have been back in US for 6 years and purchased a their own home - 3 miles from mom & dad, not long after arriving here...

    Indonesian Citizen for Nominee

I think I just found a line of business for my Balinese son-in-law that will need a way to make a living once he returns to Bali... Any takers? Mother-in-law needs nice place with A/C and other western amenities like a refrigerator with lots of ice and diet coke.

    Steiner Families

Shoggard, it would be prudent to piece together a budget if one had an certain amount of money to work with. But with them having NO foreseeable income what is the use of putting together a budget? You know, those fly by the seat of their pants, the universe will provide, type... He grew up...

    Steiner Families

joji, you're right - I was just assuming. I guess I'm just focused on "Balinese" since my son-in-law is Balinese, my daughter is American, and they have a 10 month old and a 3 year old. They tell me they plan on moving from the USA to Bali in a year and this whole conversation is hitting a...

    Steiner Families

Markit, in your opinion are ALL Balinese husbands obnoxious, self-centered, I-am-king assholes or just ones married to westerners?

    What to bring as gifts

The glasses are a great idea - I'll have to remember that one. We collect all our unwanted warm-weather clothing and fill all available space in our suitcases. Along with purses, small toiletries, small toys such as coloring books and good crayons, etc. All these things are very appreciated.

    Trash after Nyepi

But what do you do with the trash you pick up if there's not a beach warung along the way? I had a problem finding trash cans in Bali. Even in my son-in-law's family home (Balinese), I would have something to "throw away" and could never find a trash can. And do you really think that they are...

    Wow! The Fecalling was Great!!!

Markit, I've lived in Kansas for over 35 years and have never had Rocky Mountain Oysters - nor do I want to. And while Kansas may have corn and wheat, we have soybeans, sunflowers and the occasional tumbleweed. And Kansas may have a lot of red-necks and yahoos but have you looked around...

    Wow! The Fecalling was Great!!!

Hey, don't pick on Kansas. Ask my son-in-law that was born and raised in Pemuteran area but has been in Kansas for last 6 years. At least he is able to have a job that pays enough (barely) to support his family in Kansas. He learned the hard way that not all "westerners" were rich when he met...

    great Bali video

My 3 year old granddaughter, that is half Balinese and lives in Kansas, loves watching this video. We visited Bali last January and I think this helps keep her limited memories of Bali alive. Makes me want to visit again soon, especially when Kansas is currently so COLD!

Obama's victory brings new hope to Bali's tourist industry

    1) The reason Sweden is a free country now is because US and British and others took care of the Nazis and Japan. 2) Does paying 30% of your earned wages make you happy to know that you help out everyone else that doesn't want to work for a living? What happens when the "takers" overtake the...

Obama's victory brings new hope to Bali's tourist industry

I don't know if Obama re-election will help or hurt Bali tourism. Will we be escaping to Bali to get out of the America he is ruining? Oh, we wish we could come to Bali, but we won't be able to come because we won't have any money left to pay for our trip there. Our meager vacation funds will...

    Marrying a Balinese

Think long and hard before you marry.... My daughter (American) is married to a Balinese. He's a great guy and I love him dearly but the difference in cultures makes it hard on marriage - and marriage is hard enough all on its own. Now that they have two beautiful daughters I'm even more...
