Hi guys.

For the last three months I've had big problems with my stomach and intestine (pain, nausea, ...) and it doesn't seem to stop. I'm really down and don't really know what to do anymore.
I'm here in the north of Bali and it's difficult to find a doctor who knows what he's doing.
I've tried hospitals, different doctors, even a Chinese doctor (although I prefer orthodox medicine).
My experiences: Mostly incompetent doctors who care only about money and not about their patients' health, or complete rip-offs.
I've heard that the quality of health care around here is bad, but I didn't expect the doctors to be so clueless :icon_rolleyes:
Usual procedure: I want to tell the doctor about my problems he's more interested in my nationality and my activities on Bali than in my problem which apparently is of no interest for him. He checks my blood pressure and then prescribes me some drugs (no explanations what they are exactly for, or what is actually wrong with my stomach...)
I just get no proper examination or answers to any questions.
Ok... enough about that... sorry for lamenting... I'm just a little angry already.

Does anybody in this forum know about a gastroenterologist or something similar in north Bali? One who cares a little about his patients or who at least has a clue about internal medicine?
If not, what would be the best place to go to for such a matter in Denpasar, or if you think there is none, maybe somebody has experiences with doctors in Singapore? (because I've to do my visa run soon anyway).

Oh, and maybe some of you who live in the north can recommend some doctors, or share some experiences you've had. I mean for every kind of doctor, so that it's easier to find a good one, or to avoid the bad ones. Maybe there is already such a thread in this forum? Hm... I haven't found one.

Thanks a lot,
regards Hans

You may want to come to Denpasar and consult a GI specialist at Prima Medika Hospital. Typically their doctors are competent and the hospital provides good service.

That being said, if you have to do a visa run to Singapore, include a visit with a GI there. You will have greater peace of mind !

Hi BaliChiro,

thanks for your information! Do you know if the Prima Medika Hospital is expensive? Because I have no insurance and I'm not really well-off at the moment.
Do you by chance know what a typical consultation / examination with a GI costs, roughly? In Bali or Singapore?

Thanks,
regards Hans

Prima Medika's rates for foreigners are around Rp 1.5 mln for consultation with specialist. Similar rates at Kashi Ibu. Most likely they will want to run some tests, which will likely add another Rp 1 mln.

But there are some nasty bugs that they are unlike to find. Visit to a tropical diseases specialist in Singapore may be needed.

Please keep in mind that your illness may not be caused by bugs, but by appendicitis, etc.

If you have 'acid indigestion" with your other symptoms it may well be an ulcer. No fatty foods, milk, alcohol or fruit juices. Treat with anti acid tablets as well. Good luck.

Hi Hans

My 10 cents worth

What the hell are you doing still here asking us?

You've had ongoing intense symptoms for months and you're on a social forum asking and even receiving medical tips from non medical people. Do you want to wait until something bad happens for you to get a sense of urgency and get this seen to? Do yo need to collapse or writhe in agony before you take a pro active step?

Get on a plane to Singapore.. now...

Air Asia has dirt cheap flights... go to Mount Elizabeth Hospital outpatients and get checked properly

This is your health, if money is a concern....find the money somehow... this is not the house you live in, its the body you live in.... and you only have one, so tend to it...

This could be anything, and asking us questions is only putting off what needs to be done properly with first world medical skils

I have a standard joke with my friends... I wanted to have a bracelet made that said "If found unconscious.. take to Airport"

That basically reflects what is a fact... the care in Bali is not at the diagnostic or treatment standard that you may need... you don't know if this is something or nothing... but you've had intense pain and nausea for months so its something

Get off the forum and get on a plane and find out what the hell it is

Bloody hell man

At least get to one of the better clinics in Kuta, like BMIC, or SOS or else fly to Bangkok or Singapore.
I cannot fathom why peolpe ask strangers on a forum for diagnosis.

Thank you guys for your answers!

@Blondie:
Yeah, you are right, I should go as fast as possible.
Do you by chance know what awaits me in Singapore if I do a check up in the mentioned hospital? A bill of 300 or 1000 sing $? Because that matters a lot to me - I know health has first priority, but unfortunately you cannot enjoy first class treatment without sufficient funds :S.
Bloody thanks for your reply anyways :)

@bolli
I didn't ask anybody on this forum for medical advice or diagnosis, did I? I just asked if somebody knows where to go.
I've considered going to the BIMC but I've heard a of a few bad experiences people had there.

@yang peduli: Thanks, I'll probably try there first.

greetings Hans

I have been to "doctors" in the north who, like you say, measure your blood pressure and then prescribe medication without much explanation - but frequently antibiotics.

So while I know that there are those who have complained about their experiences at BIMC, I can tell you that they really are one step better. They will often discuss with colleagues, so diagnosis is more of a team effort, they will do tests - if available locally, and they will advise when they think you need to seek help outside Bali.

As an example, I had gut problems over a year ago - since gone. But they said, could be an infection, but the symptoms I described could also occur when a cancer is developing. The way to check this further would be endoscopy, but their opinion was there there were no reliable facilities for this in Bali - and if the symptoms persisted they would recommend going somewhere else - in my case this would be Australia, but for many people it would be Singapore.

So, for me, BIMC is the service in Bali that I have some respect for - but I also am aware of the criticisms of others.

Maybe it could be useful for you to consult them before jumping on a plane. I think a consultation is around Rp300,000 - but they may want tests which are extra costs.

Yesterday I came back from Singapore and I feel a whole lot better now.

I went to a GI specialist in Mount Elizabeth Medical Center (thanks for the advice Blondie!).
Great doctor, great facility. I had a consultation of about 50 minutes with a really friendly doctor who explained everything in detail and gave me time to ask a lot of questions.
Consultation is about S$ 150 which is really okay.
So, if any of you guys should have gastrointestinal problems, this is the man to go for:
Dr. Wong Heng Yu
HY Wong Gastrointestinal & Liver Specialist Clinic
-> Website
I'm sure there are hundreds of other qualified GI specialists in Singapore. But if you want to make sure you get a real good one, go for Dr. Wong.
