Panji, Singaraja.
Yesterday bought a new acer laptop with windows 8 and I can print fine using my good old canon MP170. just installed the software that came with the printer and that was it.

Bought my laptop here in Singaraja instead of abroad and shipping it here, with the warranty in mind. Seems a hassle when something is up to then send it back and forth abroad.

I did notice, during my searches, that nearly everything came loaded with Win 8.1...so thanks for pointing that out. Any time I clicked for a product with Win 7 it came up 'no stock'. I see that the main thing about Win 8 is it allows touch-screen...do you think this is something I need or will hardly use?

At this stage, I think something you won't use much. In a few years this may change. If you were showing recent photos to your friends on the laptop - just swiping a finger to move from one to the next will be easier than using mouse or keyboard. But for work involving Microsoft Office or Photoshop, I doubt the touch screen will be much use.
I guess I'll have to learn all about Win 8.1 but, as most people say I think I know everything, maybe this will be a little humbling. :black_eyed:

I really like those 'all-in-one' but have never actually seen one, so will need to see if it can fit in my bags to return to Bali. I'm scared if I leave them in the box as carry-on baggage.....Indonesian Customs will rub their hands when they offer their welcome!

I reckon you will probably have no problem - but who knows. If you really want one of them and are worried about Customs, then consider getting it here. Waroeng Komputer has many - I only pointed to one in the earlier post.

i not reccomending it for davita just saying you can have more then ONE os on a computer and use them all...

Davita should buy local and try to get real genuine windows.
I also think he will be much happier with 7 then the new 8 os do to the layout and usings of 8

I prefer and use a large laptop 17" screen not only for the screen but also because I want and use a full keyboard which you don't get with a 14" or smaller.

The large screen is a bonus for us with older eyes Cnt/+ or - increases the print size with needing to find those damned glasses every time. They can fly to the moon but can you get glasses with variable focal lengths.... that actually work? Feck no!

Another plus with big lappys is that they usually have about 4 usb slots - don't know about you lot but mine tend to rust up here in the tropics so if you've got a smaller one with fewer slots get an extra expander card with say... 6 or 8 slots. But that's something else to lug around or get tangled in.

Mouse wise go for a Teck Net radio mouse - work forever with one AA battery and no wires.

Try and get a lappy with blue tooth connectivity as it's great for updating your phone and attaching to external speakers.

Stay away from "display" models - they may be cheaper but there is a good reason why - the monitors tend to die quickly.

Try for a largish internal hard disk - norm now is 1 or 2 terabyte. But get an external while you are at it as you will need that for backing up and hiding all your porn.

Thanks markit......seems like you and I are on the same page with our readability.
Can you tell me where to get a 17" screen lappy in Bali...I haven't found one yet.

The computer manufacturers selectively target certain modes in certain countries. I don't think they are offering 17" laptops in ASEAN countries. Perhaps, gettign service on a 17" laptop screen would be a headache.

If you can stretch to the cost of an Apple MacBook Pro, although they deleted the 17" model a while back of which I had one, the 15" with the Retina display is very good on the eyes and can make up for the loss of physical size. For work, I usually hook it up to an external 23" monitor also and have stuff open on both screens - eg porn on big screen, spreadsheet and presentation to the customer on the laptop - just don't flip screens accidentally when on a video conference.
Keyboard is great also, and for work, I attach an external keyboard and mouse.

I always think mac supporters are like religious fanatics...their way or no way. My buddy is the same and yet..every time he opens his mac to show me something he has an excuse why he cannot deliver...makes me :icon_rolleyes:!

I'm not anti-mac....don't know enough about computers to have an opinion and haven't slept in a Holiday Inn for at least a couple of years.

Has anyone seen a laptop or all-in-one for sale in Bali with 17" + screen?
I'ts my 77th birthday tomorrow and I think my wife is desperate to bring me out of the dark ages with a birthday present.
She knows porn-sites are censored in Indonesia but I haven't told her of many on this forum who tell me how to get around the ban. I told her I need a big screen for educational purpose...and I don't lie!!!:icon_wink:

Sorry I suggested it, your loss. I also have quite a background in Windows and still also use that when it makes sense to do so. I was advising in line with the requirements you have stated, not because of a blind preference for one manufacturer or another.

Sorry...I thought you said Mac doesn't make a 17" any more and using a laptop and hooking up different monitors/keyboards seems a complicated system to me. I like simplicity and have become accustomed to windows. If they have a Mac with a big screen in Bali.....I'd be happy to look at it.

I wasn't directing to your post particularly.....Gurkha also said 'Get a Macbook' but didn't mention where I could get one with a big screen in Bali.

@smoke.....is Rimo that what you mean by Computer Mall in Denpaser, or is there another, and do they sell large screen laptops with already installed OS?
