Irate writer alert ^^^

I've watched this building on FB and in Ubud and frankly I'm not convinced there are that many incidents that are valid.

It's more of "oh, I heard about this" and "I saw this" and "my friend had this happen last time she was in Kuta" kind of thing.

I've really tried to find out if there are real people having real crimes committed against them (written and asked, that's all) but I have to say I'm not entirely convinced that anything is happening.

I may be wrong.

yes you are wrong markit. I t happens here now every day and I know A LOT of girls who are victims of these kind of violent assaults. These cowards just attacking girls (also indonesian girls), shame on them!! I barely now a girl here in the south (krobokan, Canggu, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Denpasar, sanur etc) who hasn't been molested or robbed at daylight or at nighttime....

If the victims are able to provide a license plate number (unlikely while being attacked), then they might be able to try to track down these people. Otherwise, they escape into the night and no one can tell the difference between them and any random two Indonesians on a motorbike.

Am actually interested to hear what they think the solution is.

I was a witness of a serious hit and run accident some years ago, i followed the guy and got his plate number. when I came back to the scene, some bored police men already arrived, I proudly (I admit) gave the cop the piece of paper with the plate number, he couldn't be less interested!
A female friend of mind had her bag stolen a week ago in Gunung Salak area (2 phones, papers and a purse) and she saw the plate number as well and gave it to the police. They said "we must survey this" probably in a trash bin 5 minutes after she left the office ;(((

a 18year old died in a pick-pocketing and people gonna gather to mourn the dead and show their anger about this ongoing insecurity and u look for some entertainment ?? sound weird to me mister...

To be fair when I made the comment it wasn't to morn the dead. He has since changed the description. It was just going to be a rally which I did think had the potential to be entertaining.

Rangi's post was made when the thing was still a 'demo' so remarks on events that developed afterwards are out of context ... I mean how can anyone be dismissive of a ceremony for the deceased ... I mean it is all warm and fuzzy now isn't it?
No one would dream of mentioning certain pubs and restaurants at every opportunity in every article related to this sad occasion ... would they?

Thanks for that - as I said then "I may be wrong".

Surely if every girl you know has been assaulted in one way or another....then this place would be known as one of the most violent places on the planet and tourists would not be flocking to Bali for the 'tranquility'...

My wife just conducted a quick survey amongst friends, daughter's friends, relations etc. and she knows 147 females living or working on Bali who have never been robbed, assaulted or molested ... deduce from that what you will ... but it's true none of them know you!

Are there any theories or ideas who might be behind these attacks? Opportunistic individuals or organized gangs?

I have read most of the accounts of bag grabs around Ubud and talked to some of the women involved. My gut feeling is that here around Ubud it is mostly opportunistic individuals. But some of the incidents involve 2 perpetrators - so that should read "opportunistic individuals or duos".

But the activity close to Kuta night-clubs may well be different. Maybe there is a gang element there.

The standard 'group' method of fleecing tourists can be anything up to five people involved.

One pleasant looking individual stops or turns suddenly in front of obvious tourists laden with 'goodies' in a crowded sidewalk/market and even at the foot or top of escalators in malls.
The mark stops and another accomplice bundles into them from behind.
Amid much apologising and checking 'everything is ok'...
A third member squeezes past and relieves the mark of anything easily removable.
Stolen items are quickly dropped into a bag carried by another conspirator.
He moves away swiftly and mounts the pillion of a waiting motorcycle.
If the marks catch on and start yelling allegations, the 'accused' quickly gather around displaying empty pockets or knapsacks and loudly declaring their innocence.
A crowd will quickly gather, and make NO mistake, it WILL.
The robbers make off in the confusion.

However, pulling this stunt in a crowded market in Sanur with a third expat following not far behind the 'marks' was the downfall of one group of would-be scumbags. Said third expat had seen the scenario operating before and without hesitation waded into the group using his camera 'case' on a strap as makeshift 'Nunchakas' ... the thieves fled empty handed and 'Bruce' carried on as if nothing had happened. The stall holders barely had time to react but soon lost interest as 'Bruce' started making inquiries about prices of items on display.

Action NOT recommended for the faint-hearted but his business card telephone number WAS based in Langley, Virginia...

I think she's got a point. Several actually;

I certainly can appreciate the intent, concern and the effort put in for this event and I thank you for that. I humbly ask that before proceeding any further you consider the following:

1. Legality issues: The right to assemble; licensing requirements; the right to post banners on public and private property; interference with traffic, visa restrictions on actions taken etc. A night or 2 in the Poldar is not a fun experience and legal expenses could be hefty.

2. Media Involvement/ Impact on tourism: International media have a clear bias and ratings agenda to report and skew reporting to the negative; historically the more international media the less likely to have a positive outcome; open participation by attendees who speak to media has the potential to be emotive, speculative, unsubstantiated negative gossip and may be legally defamatory and racially biased. Correct me if I am wrong but defamation in Indonesia is a criminal offense not a civil one.

3. Election in July: Please consider the timing of such a demonstration. A demonstration like this could be used and skewed for political advantage

4. Efforts and investigations in process: The assumption that the Police has and intends to do nothing is specious. The Police and the local Banjars are very concerned and currently there are investigations taking place that could be undermined by a demonstration. Actions being taken by Police are understandably kept confidential during an ongoing investigation. Crimes of this nature are difficult to solve and prosecute because evidence is often vague and unverifiable. Law enforcement need time to gather evidence that meets the standards for successful prosecution. Simply because you are unaware of current Police efforts does not mean they do not exist. By default a demonstration like this is has the potential to alienate the very people [Police, Banjars, Government officials etc] by implying that they are not doing anything to combat. This is simply not the case.

5. Alternatives: Quietly gather and pass on specific and factual information about the perpetrators that can assist the Police to make an arrest and that meets evidentiary standards for the Prosecutors office to proceed.

Note: If this is gang related those who have useful information will be more likely to come forward in a confidential environment than if this becomes a public free-for-all; the potential for which with a demonstration being high
Combine your efforts with groups already working on this issue and who are long term permanent residents with perhaps a better understanding of how things work in Indonesia and in Bali. Make your first step be one of cooperation and communication with Law Enforcement in an organised private environment. Work behind the scenes in a polite, media and publicity free environment with the Police and the local Banjars.
Your efforts are truly appreciated however I humbly ask based on the above that you reconsider this initiative.
Well said!

Me, I still maintain there aint much going on.

Ok someone fell off her fecking bike and went to the happy driving grounds in the sky.

Ok someone got the fecked up in her villa in Ubud

Sorry as shit for them, but glad it wasn't me or mine.

Give us a couple of months till the season passes and it will all look different.

Have put it in my "god" phone for next year to remind me.

By the way the most dangerous thing for women seems to be MEN, surprise!

Girls, time to go Lesbo until the "Men" that are running the whole shebang sort it out. (or turn gay)

HaVE i BEEN DRinking too Much?

P.S. does anyone else think Lizzy Love looks like brain-shot JFK on the Zabruder film?

Actually I don't think Bali is the place for single women to live on their own! Safety wise i mean..
