President Aims for Land Certification to be Completed Next Year

Speaking at a handover ceremony of land certificates at the Delta Sports Center (GOR) in Sidoarjo, East Java, on Wednesday (27/12/23,) President Jokowi announced that the Indonesian government will complete the issuance of land certificates by 2024 for an estimated six million plots of land that have yet to be certified, according to reporting from Antara News.

The president said that in 2015, only 46-million plots of land were completed out of a total of 126-million. At that time, the National Land Agency (BPN) could only issue 500,000 land certificates per year, which would mean it would take 160-years to complete the process to certify the remaining 80-million land plots.

This resulted in Jokowi’s administration aggressively pushing for the completion of land certification throughout the country; until now, an estimated six million plots of land remain to be certified.

Antara News reports that at the land certificate handover ceremony in Sidoarjo, the president gave away more than three thousand land certificates from the categories of asset redistribution/ agrarian reform and complete systematic land registration (PTSL.)

He also conveyed the importance of owning a land certificate as proof of legal rights to the land owner and for preventing land conflicts, which often occur due to the lack of certificates. “Next year, all land in Indonesia, in our country, will all have land certificates,” said the President.

The completion of certificates carried out so far has been through cooperation between the district, provincial, and central BPN, he said.

Antara News says that Jokowi advised people keen on using their land certificates as collateral at the bank to ensure that they could pay interest on the loan, saying that he did not want the land certificates that had been given to be confiscated by the bank as the land owners were unable to pay the loan interest. “We want this land certificate to be able to bring welfare to our community,” he emphasized.
