Another one from the rag The Bali Sun. North Bali Airport Article FWiW, I'm a bit agnostic over the building of a new airport in the North. The purpose of this posting is to highlight some of the thought processes and rationale used when studying issues and developing solutions. If you were to ever wonder why Bali has some of the issues it has with few meaningful solutions, look no further than some of the opinions of the guys making decisions in the article. Then again, maybe something was lost in the translation....

They started talking about the New Northern Airport about 15 minutes after the rebuild of the "new" airport was finished. A suspiciously short enough time to make one suspect they'd made some dosh on the new airport and wanted to select/copy/paste it again in the north. I'd love to hear about the number of times and places land has be speculated upon since then, from Lovina to Kubu in the north-east. It's all a game and they really need an adult in the room. I don't have great faith in the new tourism minister as she's been working with daddy for yonks and then moved into gov to get this job not so long ago= scads of experience, Not!

Well, they're gonna need some serious dosh.. Between the new railway system, new subway system, new electric bus system, new highway over the sea and a new airport I'am not sure the 280 million Indonesians will be OK to spend that much to profit to only 4,4 million Balinese plus a bunch of foreigners !

The Chinese will be footing that bill I suspect as they want to get their hands on Indonesia's nickel ore.

I think it's a foolish move to allow China to come in and build all these new facilities. They are not doing this out of generosity or kindness. Once they do this, they will have control over Indonesian decisions, and government. It's like having the fox, build the henhouse!

An MOU is not legally binding. And moreover : Legal Position of Memorandum of Understanding in Indonesia In the Indonesian laws and regulations, there are no provisions that specifically regulate the MoU.

They want to build it on an artifial island....they really like challenges !

An artificial island + a runway + the terminal, all ready for 2027.... And 200,000 workers... hahaha “The target is to complete one runway in 2027 because at that time it was predicted that Airport Ngurah Rai would be very full, so we are chasing that in 2027 one runway must be completed and immediately operational, with a workforce absorption of around 200,000 people.”

Pick up a history book. The central powers in Jakarta have never done what the Balinese locals wanted since they took over from the Dutch. Tourism was thrust on this island against the will of the Balinese and there is no turning back now. Bali is Jakarta's little pet and they will do whatever Jakarta wants them to do or face the consequences.

I could be wrong, but I believe I read somewhere they looked into expanding the current airport into the sea but the environmental damage was too big a risk - I know, since when has Indonesia ever cared about the environment - but apparently, that was the deciding factor in not expanding the current airport.

The entire island is becoming an overcrowded mess. I saw this coming thirty years ago. I knew the people would have children, then those children have more, and it keeps repeating. Now with more wealth, and credit, everyone can buy a car and motorbikes for the kids. Plus all the people from other islands flooding Bali to chase money. Gojek, and Grab are a big mistake. The drivers make little money, but the bosses make a fortune. It also takes away money from local taxi drivers. All of Bali needs a major overhaul of the infrastructure, and roads! Is it even possible to create an efficient public transportation system . Remember Bemo's?

Having lived here through 3 (count them, earthquakes, volcanoes, pandemic) tourist boom and busts I can fully understand why they are so reticent to invest huge sums in what could change again completely tomorrow.

In their dreams! And the only qualified workers for a project like this would definitely not be Balinese! This means more crowded roads with more people from outside Bali.

When is this new toll North-South road going to be built? I would love to be able to get to Sanur, Airport, Kuta, area in 30 mins. From Ubud area. Hah, another pipe dream for sure!

The current airport is already operating at max capacity. Was flying in from overseas last week and we spend almost 45 minutes circling around Nusa Penida waiting for space to open up for landing. Then there is the parking situation, the traffic and the overall congestion inside the airport...it's fucked. No room to just make a bigger airport either so the only two options are: 1. Put a cap on how many tourists will enter Bali each year (my choice but I know will never happen because you know, greed) 2. Build a second airport to diversify the congestion

This environmental B.S. is ridicilous. Specially when you look all around you here. When we started projecting an artificial island in HKG for the HK - Zhuhai - Macao bridge project, one of the MAIN problems was "yes, but this is the location of breeding for the white dolphins" , followed by hours of B.S. I once dared to say "dolphins are smart animals, when they'll hear the noise of our equipment they'll move on and go breed somewhere more peacefully" I was looked at with shock and horror like I had just expressed some blasphemy. After much delay and show the thing was build and the dolphins moved on.

You can limit access to anything in 2 ways: 1) raise the price until the demand goes down OR 2) allow any and all visitors until demand goes down because it's overrun and fecking awful there. I'm a little puzzled why the world seems to only chose method 2 (except for the Seychelle islands).
