Last time I tried anywhere near Ubud they wanted real money for bed for the night. If you’re on the adventure route try finding some east - west roads (most there all go north-south) and just get lost if you can - some lovely scenery and people. Best stay option is Kintamani around the caldera. Also a great tour option with some good warung around (not on the edge - stupid expensive).
