The plan to construct an international airport in Buleleng regency in north Bali remains uncertain despite previous assurances from the central government.

Arya Sukerta, head of the Buleleng Transportation Agency, shared his latest information on the plan with Bali Daily on Wednesday afternoon.

“It is clear that Buleleng regency was already declared the most appropriate place to build an additional international airport to anticipate the flood of domestic and international visitors to Bali,” Sukerta said.

The idea to develop a new international airport in Buleleng was promoted several years ago by Jero Wacik, then-minister of tourism and culture, on the grounds that the planned airport would gradually take over from the current Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban, which itself would become the second international airport.

IMHO it's contradictory if the government "declare the most appropriate place to build an international airport" and need investor cash to build it
but no investor wants to be part of it cause the only reason that the government wants to build it in the north is....I don't want to start :))

In 2012, about 12 million passengers landed in Bali. The Buleleng a/p is expected to be THE main a/p in Bali, and therefore let us assume for the sake of argument that about 2/3 of these passengers would be handled there.

However, there are absolutely no facilities in Buleleng capable to handle any substantial numbers of visitors, let alone 8 million. Furthermore, there are no roads and no transportation system to take them to the South, where there is a glut of facilities as it stands now!

But, let’s assume that, by some unforeseen miracle, these facilities see the light of day in the Buleleng area. So now we would have TWO “gluts” of facilities on Bali. And the BIG assumption is that these visitors, and more, will still be stepping over each others in order to come and visit an “exotic” place overwhelmed with pollution, lack of water, overcrowded, overbuilt, etc…

So, I’m no Arya Sukerta, but as anyone can see, finding at least 160 hectares of flat land (don’t they have bulldozers and dynamite in Indonesia!?) is obviously the least of his problems. :icon_rolleyes::icon_rolleyes:

I can't help thinking that a lot of these "projects" that get bandied about have as their sole purpose the filling up of the local Civil Servant Retirement Fund.

would it be fair to say, we'd be looking at a minimum 10 years for it to be completed? planning approval, deciding on construction company, building, roads etc etc etc? I think if anyones bought land up north, it might be a wise investment , but not a quick return....?

Given ALL the present Bali's problems, which not only aren't being addressed but are growing, the new a/p in Bululeng makes as much sense as tits on a bull.

just tried to explain the article to a little kid: the bad queen is told by her miracle mirror that Snow-White wants to build behind the seven mountains a new airport for herself, the seven dwarfs will help her because it's soo remote, surrounded by mountains and no adequate street. The ogoh-ogohs like the idea as well as they know if there are millions of extra people travelling these mountains every year they will get many extra souls because of the accidents which will be inevitable....
