Minister: EU Desk is Open to Strengthen Cooperation

Following a meeting with members of the European Business Chamber of Commerce (EuroCham) Indonesia on Monday (9/12/24,) Indonesia’s Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Roeslani said that his ministry will open a European Union (EU) desk to improve cooperation between Indonesia and the region, according to reporting from Antara News.

“We agree to set up an EU desk at the Investment and Downstreaming Ministry office. Until now, there has been a China desk, Japan desk, and Korea desk, now we are setting up an EU desk to support (this cooperation),” he said.

Europe is Indonesia’s fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment. The Netherlands, France, and Germany are countries with the highest investment.

The country members of the EU region invested about USD 18.7 billion (approximately IDR 296.3 trillion) between 2019 and the third quarter of 2024.

Roeslani said that Indonesia remains attractive for European investors because of its large economic and market potential, saying “Indonesia represents around 41 percent of the ASEAN population and 36 percent of the ASEAN economy. It is also supported by a growing economy and stable democracy,” Antara News reports.

Meanwhile, European Union Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, Denis Chaibi, said that as a strategic partner, his party is committed to working with Indonesia to strengthen trade relations and address global challenges, adding that they are also committed to collaborating with the Indonesian government to realize the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision through various key initiatives, such as the Global Gateway and the Just Energy Transition Partnership, according to reporting from Antara News.

Through the key initiatives as well as increasing trade and investment relations, the European Union is honored to be able to support Indonesia in creating transformative investments that will shape a greener and more inclusive future, he added.
