I have a project that needs a textured wallcovering & I'm thinking of:-
- real rattan or grasscloth weave (something like that used in furniture &/or the screens-room dividers)
- or even those rolls of woven rattan sometimes seen at the side of the road
- or, a textured wall covering (wallpaper?)

Total area, about 90sq m

Could be 'real rattan'/ grasscloth - must be treated for bugs, infestation, termites etc (which precludes me buying at the side of the road)
Or could be wallpaper

Sorry, it's a bit vague, but I'm having one of those 'I'll know it when I see it' days!

Any ideas?

Don't think rattan is as prone as the wood, but thanks to the wavelike structure, it get tricky when something sticks into it.

It would be wonderful to see something out of the box, just as long as you prepare to do the maintenance :highly_amused:

The best place for rattan handicraft is Cirebon, maybe Surabaya is closer? or just go to one of those furniture specialist and order from them, there's a Dutch guy who opens a showroom and made his great product directly from Cirebon, maybe you could check the place out, its located in Blahbatuh Ubud, near Patung Bayi

Or you could print the pattern in one of those digital printers place for t-shirt? Way much easier...

I made an entire wall out of those woven bamboo mats that, I would guess, are used for some sort of impromptu walling and I think it looks pretty cool. Have hung a bunch of those darkness happy plants (you know what I mean, like orchids).

Here's a picture - saves a 1000 words. IMGP7727.jpg

And the reverse side looks like this: IMGP7728.jpg

the kicker for Cheap-ass me was that a bundle of 10 of these sheets cost ... 80K. Your rattan will cut into the Bintang fund considerably harder I suspect.

Markit, looks good as a fence, but for my project it's a bit 'thick' - the plan is to stick it on walls &/or ceiling

Ferdie, Cirebon is probably a good idea - I was in Surabaya last week & struck out... someone mentioned a couple of companies that would 'absolutely' have it laminated to plywood or marine ply.... total waste of time they hadn't a clue what I was on about.

Jepara was much more interesting & productive on the furniture sourcing front

I've seen lots of those mats called 'tatami' for sleeping on and the more robust 'kerek' to protect windows from sun/rain.
Looks to me any of those stores that make those on Jl Kerobokan/Jl Semer should be able to custom make to any thickness and dimension.

Thanks davita... you're right, tatami is probably a better description (though Japanese & most likely with fancy 'Japanese prices'.... I'll check out kerek & see what I come up with

Iv'e asked around and, although tatami clearly originated in Japan, it is commonly used throughout Asia...my back reminds me of sleep-overs in Malaya on a tatami, but I don't recall bugs. Now if you want bugs....you need to use motel 5 in the US where they don't even charge extra!

It was difficult enough to sleep when on the ground but, in your case, trying to sleep on a tatami on the wall will be an extraordinary feat...I think! except when :drunk:

@ Ferdie: You might be right, to me it looks like some dried woven grass - but might be something derived from bamboo (looks a little too 'thin' to be bamboo stalks, so sliced & diced
@ Hermit: Thanks checking now... yup, that is about as close as I've seen so far, though I have yet to Ferdie's earlier suggestion of Cirebon (bet the 'bamboomulia' products don't originate in Bali)
@ Markit: It IS JUST one example of its use, not the entire room colour scheme.

I don't see an address on that website, googled it and same thing... I'll send an email, failing that I'll go and have a nose around

I found a tatami supplier in Surabaya - damn I was there last week but my mind wasn't thinking 'tatami' but rattan
