Ubud, Bali
There have been many cell phone shops in Jl Raya Peliatan on the south-east edge of Ubud for a long time now. But up until a few months back, there was only one with a big illuminated sign for a phone brand - that was Nokia and it was about half way down opposit Dapur Sonya da Vespa - a bar/restaurant that has been mentioned before on this forum.

Then Samsung invaded and big signs popped up - blue background and white lettering - rather like Nokia. In one kilometre on this street there now more than 10 of them. Then the final indignity for Nokia - that lone Nokia sign came down to make way for a Samsung.

So this street is showing on a local scale what is a global change. Nokia and Blackberry sales are going backwards and Samsung has beaten Nokia and is now selling more mobile phones. Nokia and Blackberry were both confident they had good products and underestimated the impact that Apples iPhone would have. Google created the Android software for mobile phones as a competitor to iPhone, and made it available to any phone manufacturer who wanted it. Samsung, LG, Huawei and Motorola were among the companies to adopt Android. Samsung has done well with its Android smartphones, and like Nokia also has plenty of low-cost phone models. That's how its total phone sales had done so well.

There is an intersting article on Nokia's poor decisions at Nokia's Bad Call on Smartphones - WSJ.com
