Sorry Mimps for the overlap of our posts. I did mine off line and then posted. Of course, I agree with you 100%...if rabies is now in Bali, it is serious, but good grief...where is the factual information? This is frustrating as hell, and for you (your location) even more so.

SG,
When your dogs were vaccinated, were you given a red tag to affix to their collars and a paper certificate from the vet as proof of vaccination? Is there a separate tag of a different color just for licensing purposes or, are dogs licensed at all?
After seeing all of the skanky, horrible looking pooches that seemed to infest every beach we set foot on, it was very difficult for me to believe that Bali was rabies free. Unfortunately, rabies isn't the only cross-contaminant that a dog can carry.
On Sumatra most of the dogs are of the same type as the black one you own, medium sized robust and healthy, I only saw about six that were in really bad shape out of hundreds. Why are the dogs so sickly looking in Bali as compared to Sumatra? I'm sure they're given about equal care, which is next to nothing. Dogs are very unpopular on Sumatra.
Your dogs are very beautiful and clean. Is your dachshund a mini or, standard?

Our Dachshund is a miniature, although slightly big for that. I suspect that the breeds mixed a bit somewhere along the line.

The vaccinations and inoculations are in their Carnet De Sante (vaccination book) along with the stickers from the bottles. The vet, Doctor Anom, is one of the best on the island, if not the best. There are some rogues here including one who sold a friend's pedigree dog when they were on holiday and then said it had died.

No, dogs are not licensed at all..but with a rabies situation like this you'd think it might be a good idea...then again Indonesia can't organise vehicle licensing so I think dogs are a way off.

There was a time, some years back, when non Bali dogs needed to be licensed but no more. That said, I've had a traffic policeman demand to see both their papers when I've been stopped at a Polisi money grab..whoops I mean SIM check, and ask for money when I refused. We just laughed at him and drove off.

How comforting, cops are cops everywhere.
You weren't concerned about being chased down and enduring the pistol whip/night stick routine?
We're thinking about bringing our chihuahua, by way of Singapore, across the channel to Batam by ferry and then on to Bintan to purchase a cottage.
Any suggestions outside of the usual paperwork and bribing the local polisi to make the trip run more smoothly? I suppose if my doggy paperwork is good enough for Singapore, it should be good enough to enter Batam, shouldn't it?

is there any further news on this situation regarding Rabbies ?

Tempo last Thu reported:
Local official announced the alert status on Tuesday after two local residents in Badung Regency aged 28 and 8 died of rabies. The two residents died in September but test results on the two men came recently. Bali is also conducting vaccination on domestic animals throughout the province.

Full report at http://www.tempointeractive.com/hg/nusa/bali/2008/12/04/brk,20081204-149626,uk.html
but the official is not named, and so it seems like yet another report that is difficult to assess.

Again today, nothing in Bali Post or Jakarta Post. Very strange, to say the least. Such a happening in Bali is certainly VERY serious, more critical than the new Undang-undang Antipornografi, and one would expect that the population be kept very well inform.

No problem Chilli.

Sorry to hear about your friend. :(

I think I need to get some of the vaccine that they have now, for Janji. I did try calling a number I found on Goggle for BAWA to find out where I could get it but it was a wrong number. Does anyone have the right number? My phone books have been put in storage while we had visitors and I havent got them out again yet.

Definitely the first two numbers that Chilli gave above are on their pamphlet so give them a call, they will head you in the right direction even if for some reason they cannot give the vaccination themselves. In the meantime I would recommend keeping Janji safe at home as I hear some dogs are still being poisoned or subject to vigilante culling.

I sincerely hope this whole issue is restricted to the very few cases which have been proven (if they have been proven at all, so much conflicting information about at the moment).

Best regards
Toucan

Thanks Chilli & Toucan

I will give them a call tomorrow. I am not expecting them to give the vaccine but at least hopefully to be able to tell me where to get it.

I will need to call Bali kennels too and hope they arent booked up over the holiday period. Previoulsy we were able to take him between Bali & Lombok but I doubt so now. So two weeks at home is down to one as I dont want to leave him in kennels for too long.
