Shanghai to Bali

Hello everyone,

I am a British guy currently living in Shanghai with my girlfriend. We have become disenchanted by China (and not for any reactionary or ill thought out reasons) and are considering spending some time in Bali.

I wonder if anyone has any advice about what the employment situation is currently like in Bali. I am a philosophy graduate in possession of a brain but little in the way of vocational training. I play (jazz/blues) piano well enough to perform live and have been scraping a living as a writer, editor and music teacher. My much more talented girlfriend is working towards a career in environmental science and climate change, but is open-minded about work at present.

Steph has been to Bali three times before and remembers the place very fondly. Would a stay on your island be a refreshing change from the doom and gloom of Shanghai?

Many thanks for any thoughts,

Nick

Not a good idea to put your direct email address on public view. As to your questions. Employment is extremely difficult on Bali unless you have specialist skills to bear or you set up your owm company. (Search on the site for this)

You can look on various websites but in the main the forecast for work is gloomy. There is much on this site if you do some searches on the subject. It would seem that teaching english is on the jobs list but you would need qualifications for that.

Sorry to give such a doom and gloom answer but you will find many have tried before.

Good luck to you in your search and my last suggest is to go to Bali on holiday and have a look around, talk to the many expats and get a better picture.

Hi Nick & steve, Yes, a stay in Bali will be a great idea! I cannot comment on ShangHai, but have no doubt that if you spend time in Bali, any doubts that may be in your mind now - will just disappear. So please come and meet us!

Nick and Steph, hell yeah Bali would be a fresh breath of air for you guys!! As far as jobs are concerned, since you're a smart guy and you're into writing, why don't you start a blog? I know it'll take months before it will make any money but if you keep at it it could very well become a nice stable income stream that not only will sustain your life but will also liberate you from any forms of employment. No promises, but that's the path I took 3 years ago and I'm living here now while my blogs work for me! :D
