Hi, I have just joined the expat forum, so far I have found many answers to my questions thanks to you all.
Myself and my husband have been planing to move to Indonesia for the past 4 years and have now decided after travelling every part that Bali would be ideal.
My husband wants to set up a dive business an myself take my business from England to Bali (photographer and web designer).
Has anyone set up a business or know how we go about it. We have contacted the embassy but have not had any real answers to help us on our way.

Many thanks
Alex :?

Hi Alex!

First off, welcome to the forum and secondly, selamat on your decision to move to Bali.

For setting up a business here in Bali, it is highly advisable to use a professional legal service. I can recommend two based either on my own personal experience or the high recommendations of others.

PT Bali Ide http://www.bali-expat-business.com/

In addition to being an excellent visa service, they also offer excellent legal services.

Peter Johnson, Austindo http://www.balivilla4sale.com/legal_rep.html

Peter is a very highly regarded attorney from Australia.

As for specific and helpful tips regarding a dive business, I can personally recommend my very good friend John Huxley of Eco Dive in Amed.

Cheers and good luck with your move.

There are 3 kind of companies used... (AFAIK)

The ordinary firm, in Indonesian a "C.V."
The "P.T." in English a Ltd.
The PMA an Indonesian Ltd. with foreign directors.

The first two can only be owned by Indonesians, but can employ foreigners. Cheapest.

CV is only 80-90 dollars, PT about 800-900 dollar

PMA varies, somewhere around 4000 USD, and you need a capital of 100.000 USD (150.000 maybe nowadays)

If you use a CV or PT, you need Indonesian owners, and they will not do it for free, a percentage is usually paid.

Bert, am I correct in that a PMA requires a minimum of 5% Indonesian ownership? Also, is it correct that land can be held (Hak Milik) under the name of a PMA?

I am not sure about the 5% Indo ownership, I know it was needed, and then not anymore, but it may have been changed again....

No, a PMA cannot hold Hak Milik certificates, but can "own" land by means of HGB, Hak Bangunan...

I have this book, and I have no time to look things up, but it holds all the secrets:

Hi alex
Where are you moving from.
I have been planning on moving to Bali for a while and my plans keep getting postponed.
Looks like not until september now. after a california summer.
Good luck in starting your dive business, sounds exciting.
I have been scuba diving since I was 16 and now 51, but havent been diving much lately.
I been surfing just as long but again havent been doing that much lately.
Waiting to get to some warm clear water.
I live in Santa Cruz, California and water is pretty cold here.
I will need to go diviing when i get there and get my son certified, so you can get some business from me.
Bye for now
Bobby

Looking at staying at the Mimpi over in Gilimanuk?
Dave does not dive here anymore as it is way too cold.
Any expats living in Bali who would like to meet for a drink and a chat when we get there would be great, just let us know. We will travel the complete island when we are there this time as in October 07 we had mistakabily taken friends who were pool people and did not want to explore so we only got 3 days outside hotel.
