Tracy is correct, but you should be careful with changing your money in Bali. Best to use an authorized money changer. Banks are a safe bet, and I hear that the money changers at Kodak are honest. There is an unfortunate number of money changers who are out to cheat tourists. In fact, I ran into this last week on my way back to Sumbawa from Thailand. I attempted to change money at several shops, but when the fellows there saw my Balinese friend walk in behind me, they suddenly realized that they were out of money. As I walked out and some other tourists walked in, I witnessed them preparing to change money for those folks who arrived without a "local" with them. There is a current story about the money changing problem in the Bali Discovery online magazine.

Bruce, even my hubby has had the experience in a money changer where it was (for examples sake) 7,150 rp per $1 Aus.

He changed $100 & the money changer said to him some for me some for you OK boss & tried to keep the 150,000. My Hubby snatched back the $100 & walked out!

Now he is Balinese & at the time was still living in Bali!!!!

I guess the Money Changer just thought he was perhpas our driver or tour guide helping us by changing money!?

Last time I was in Bali just over a month ago there was a good document on the do's and dont's of moneychanging there. Basically;

1. know what the rate for the day is - if the moneychanger's listed rate is way above this, they will try and scam you

2. Watch out for rates listed as 7295 or 9495. They will try and scam you

3. Try and deal only in larger notes - if the moneychanger only has 20K notes, they will try and scam you

4. Try and deal with one person only - a 2nd person may try and distract during counting

5. Common trick is recounting money - as it is tilted towards them, several notes may 'accidently' fall into their lap/drawer. Some are quite good at this, some are pretty average and easy to spot

i can confirm kodak shops are good - i have never had problems with them.

A few years ago, I came across a guy who's calculator was rigged. Still dont know how he did it but I watched him punch in the correct numbers and a value some 10% less popped up.....go figure

They rig it by saving a lower rate into the memory & saving it, then use various calculators depending on what your changing $100, $50, $200 etc...

I found it easier for myself to change $100 at a time as it's easier to work out 100 X 7,250 rp = 725,000,
Rather than in lot's of $50 etc...

I found the best money changer to be at the end of Jln Legian/kuta beach road on the left, it's a bank & really good rate & never any rip offs!

Or you can do what Ronnie did during his first money exchange experience..

I waltzed into a dodgy exchange joint and asked for $100.00 to be changed over. My new best friend behind the counter advised that if I exchanged $300.00 he could do me a better rate(the sucker sticker on my foreheadmust have been flashing)

So i handed over three hundred of my hard earned and he happily counted it in front of me. I thought it was a bit odd that he wanted to give me the cash in 20 000 bills but you know, when in Rome....

After the third time counting the money, his mate comes in and says gday. As i turn to say gday also, ole mate behind the counter took some cash for himself.

When i got back to the hotel i was about $100.00 bucks short. think I fell for every trick in the book.

Anyway, the hotel security(Kartika) were kind enough to escort me back to the place and demanded the money back.

For their effort, I tipped the two security people two hundred thousand rupeah between the two of them.

The reaction on their faces was priceless.

gidday, just got back and i gotta comment on the mega scams at seminyak - the money changers have popped up bigtime down there like the big H strapped to an aussie mule.
the story goes my wife and i rock in to the same money changer previously used 6 months ago. different guy than before but yes he wanted the $300 not $100 and yes he gave us 20,000 notes. we knew the scam was going down so we played along, we watched for the slight of hand, he counted , we counted. we were happy , he was happy - hang on a tick, i think we must have been done. so we recounted and the sly pr**k did do the super quick Yak flick and we were 500,000 short. so we marched in there and said "what the f...." and he said sorry and gave us our money back.
we then tried for the next 40 minutes with at least 10 so called authorised money changers. we tried to scam them by asking for $300 then stop them at $100 and but they caught on to our attempted scam and said so sorry i don't have enough money.
this has tainted my view of the Yak.
RULE 1. always count your moneyon their premises
RULE 2. always get another friend/partner to count the money.
RULE 3. don't let the money leave your hand once you have counted it.

yes the kodak shops are/have always been good for me however i cannot go past the money changer 4 doors down on Bemo corner. usually has a guard with a machine gun inside - up 3 steps and always bloody cold too.
