Just read two very interesting books involving Bali in the 1930's.
Our Hotel in Bali: How two young Americans made a dream come true; a story of the 1930s. By Louise Koke. Louise and her husband built a hotel on Kuta beach before anything was there. Had to leave it all right before Japanese took over. Unfortunately this book is out of print but if you have a chance to read, I recommend it.
Revolt in Paradise by K'tut Tantri. She also came to Bali in 1930s and experienced a lot in Bali - even lived with a Rajah and his family in their Palace. She got captured and tortured as a Japanese prisoner and later joined the Indonesians in their war of independence against the Dutch.
