Beautiful Balinese dancer Kadek flees her hillside village home, her mother Ibu, father Bapa, and her promised-husband Made, looking for her One True Path. She tries to explain to the winged goddess, Saraswati, as well as her mercurial father that she yearns for a better life in the bright lights of the coastal tourist cities: she is afraid to become just another tired and hunched villager after a life time of barefoot work in the rice fields.
She arrives in Kuta Beach with her shadowy twin sister Ari-Ari in tow. She hopes to make it among the smart foreign set and, after a struggle, lands a job as cook to English woman, Claire Bainbridge who runs an NGO called Bali Futura. As a result of her new affiliations Kadek is befriended by Stefano, handsome American surfer, and son of wealthy Italian-American parents. After a night of dreams about sexy Stefano, Kadek is teased by her sister Ari, who appears to be working as a ‘night lady’ somewhere in Kuta. Kadek is again advised by Saraswati to “find her purpose” and “all paths will become one” otherwise she will be in for the ‘fires of hell’ but again Kadek fails to comprehend the advice. For his part Stefano is quite taken by the lovely Kadek, and is determined to do something about it, even though his rascally best buddy, Denny, reminds him he is soon to return to NY where he is engaged to marry ‘Marie, the Jewish princess’.
During one of the NGO’s fundraisers, Stefano again seizes on Kadek, sweeping her off her feet and into a gathering of his many friends from all around the world – Denny, Mia, Cing, Donat and several other kewl-kats.
