if you are a foreigner you don't actually need to change religion or even have a religious ceremony in order to have a valid marriage in Indonesia.
I got married at the italian embassy in Jakarta with a civil ceremony (marriage celebrated by the ambassador), then I went to catatan sipil to have the marriage recognized in Indonesia.
And for two Indonesians wanting mixed marriage, would that be possible, or very hard? I first-hand saw my sister-in-law's whole family walk out on her wedding because she went ahead and converted to Hindu from Muslim, and married her Hindu husband. Her family was against her conversion, and her husband was willing to convert to Muslim but his family completely against it. The whole situation was quite awful. Could that have been avoided if they knew they could have had a legitimate mixed faith marriage recognized by Indonesian gov.?
