Markit, Brian Aldinger, originally from New York, is the gentleman you met at Naughty Nuri's. He passed away last year and the restaurant is named after his wife.
Bali News: Brian Aldinger - R.I.P.
yeah...that's him but, as markit says...he was often 3/4 pissed.
I don't think he owned the one in Batubelig, maybe franchised or just sold the bragging rights. However, it is a superior restaurant and much bigger but so popular you have to share tables/benches and they won’t take reservations...you need to Q-up in all that friggin smoke from the BBQ.
@matsaleh...thanks for the info on duck at Umalas 1...I live nearby so will look out for your recommended place.
@Normy....geese!...now we are talking...goose liver pate...my fav. Coco's in Jl. Laksmana used to have a 2 kilo? round of that pate and sold smaller slices. I was there one day to buy a few more slices when a guy asked me "How's that pate?" I said "it's fantastic!" bugger me but he bought the rest of the whole friggin round and they've never had it in again!
Anyone knows where to get pate or foi gras or terrine?
Markit
Jumping Jehovah I really hate this shite?
Wonder if they have a transplant program for the liver pate chickens? And can anyone tell me what the feck "meliponni healing nectar" is good for, except increasing the bill?
By the by - Organic, raw, goats milk is a good way to get all kind of nasty diseases and parasites here in the tropics.
This is exactly why I wanted to find REAL, LOCAL FOOD. Not this jumped up western bullshit that is everywhere in fecking Ubud.
HELP!!
Markit
Thanks very much.
"you wouldn't cheat now by bringing your own expats would you?) :anonymous:".
Naaa, ask anyone I'm a notorious cheapass, if I brought another bule I'd have to pay.... unless, hmmm - note to self get invited to Warung Ikan Bakar Pak Wayan for B-day and take picture then. Win, win, win yahooo.

Thanks for your post #22 joji
I think your friend needs a marketing team to brand name those products.
Even if I was hungry and the waitress said "Sir, would you like Amoringa, Clove, Neem or Meliponi this morning and, what would you like with your cereal?...we offer organic raw goats milk and I should tell you all those products are raised on fermented ground goat and chicken manure fertilizers!"
I don't care how much her luscious lips moved to say those words and how much of her cleavage I can see .....I think I'd vomit!:apple::uncomfortableness::icon_e_confused:
Do they sell the pate in a market or somewhere like Coco or Lippo Gourmet or Bali Deli or Pepito sliced on a paper/plastic package, without the advertising?

That was for Davita, Markit.
If you like Ayam Bakar, and Ikan Bakar, in a place where the only other white face you see may be yourself in the mirror there, try Warung Ikan Bakar Pak Wayan, in Ubud. Their phone number is 081805604369, call them for directions. Go before noon to get a seat. If you see another expat there take a photo of him as proof, and I'll buy you a beer! Davita, Email Jon and get onto his mailing list. From what I gather, he is flat out trying to supply his customers around Ubud. I will be in Ubud next week and find out more about it and let you know.

...............
Would appreciate some more "insider" tips (RonB don't you love me any more? I'll call you when I get there anyway so it's no use hiding) on places to eat (local food please) in and around Ubud.
.........
Well, if you were thinking Nuri's go past it and around the corner to Fly Cafe. They also have a BBQ out front for ribs, steaks, etc, have the usual Indonesian dishes, some pizza, pasta, etc. A drinking spot for Hash House Harriers, and fairly popular with expats.
For Indonesian food at good prices near the Arjuna Statue, Mangga Madu is really good. Across the street is Warung Mina, bit more upmarket and a seafood flavour with deep-fried or BBQed fish etc. In the carpark of Warung Mina is Moko's music bar. His beers are expensive, but the music on Saturday nights is really good.
Among the duck restaurants, I have been a few times to Bebek Tepi Sawah - I don't order duck, but they had good smoked chicken and the ususal Indonesian dishes - a bit pricey, but good service and good food.
In Jl Raya Mas, there is Bernadette's next to Ubud Deli with good rendang, and a bit further down is Warung Semar where there are tables with great rice field views at the back of the restaurant. Again, good service, good food, a bit pricey.
Back more in the centre on Jl Hanoman, I love Mama Mia for pizza and pasta (but you said local food so maybe this is not for you), across the road is Taco Casa (Mexican, again maybe not for you) and near to it is Uma's with Indonesian dishes (Ah, that one must be for you).
Would be good to catch up for a meal or two. :-)

Although not cheap, the Indian Restaurant is worth a visit. On the same road as 'nuris' but on the other side. Proper job!
Markit
Thanks all.
What about Christmas Turkey with all the fixings? That can be island wide.

Try Nomad about 2 blocks east of the pasar on the Raya. The Tapas are mostly Indo food and delicious. Also Ibu Mangku in Kidiwakan (sp.) for great nasi campur

maybe Kedewatan?

Ibu Satri, on M.F., first block, just past the Market, on the left (The entrance looks like the front door of a house): cheep & good, Ibu is VERY nice (If she's still alive, say hello from me). But then if you're in Ubud, you should NOT miss Mosaic! This is a life-experience for anyone who love good food and exceptional dining experiences (and for your purse also)!
PS. Ibu Oka, next to the Bale Banjar, for a delicious babe guling, again, cheep & good (better than the ones in Gianyar).
Markit
Thank you all very, very much - will report further on quality and prices, maybe.

I can assure you nasi kuwir is not "blackened like charcoal". It's wonderfully fat, juicy duck with assorted condiments. The best place I've found is in Umalas I in Kerobokan.
what is the name of this place? or can i get any directions?

It just says Nasi Kuwir out the front, don't think it has a name. It's in Umalas 1, Kerobokan. I've marked it on Wikimapia here:

Well, Markit? When can Matsaleh expect her round of camembert or the like as her reward for leading you to un-chared duck?

While I am eternally grateful to Matty for many things her recommendation of a restaurant in Kerbokan when I asked about Ubud is just a hair wide of the mark and I do not part from rotten milk easily, my friend.

Just had lunch (for the nth time) in Nooks and passed Nasi Kuwir and didn't even notice....not very grand is it?
Still, some of the best food comes from non-descript looking places.
BTW matsaleh...I did take the time to drive to the very end of Umulas 1 looking for the place....my driver calls that area Kampung Perancis! So much building going on down there!
matsaleh
It's not very grand, but the food is good. They run out of food about 1:00 pm, so get there early.
