I and "she who must be obeyed" along with a small, smelly, brown dog will be spending Xmas and the first 2 weeks of the new year in Ubud and we would be very grateful for your kind recommendations of good, clean, local places to eat in and around. Please nothing touristy or "upmarket" just good Bali grub.
The one we always go to is the wonderfully named "Suckling Duck" just off the upper junction of Monkey Forest road for, surprise, surprise, good duck (don't you miss those big breasts from western ducks? Not to mention the women...) for a full duck going for about 60k.
Anyone caring to join us is very welcome

I learn something new every day. Never knew ducks could suckle nor had equipment to offer that.
Out back-side Monkeyville is a shop called Copper & Coffee, fairly good food but don't order the Eggs Benedict as it has no resemblance to the real thing.
To get your drink on, stumble down the gang next to the cultural center on Jl. M. F. road, next to soccer field. Nice bar staff and several elder expats wearing white shirts at the bar. They also feature a decent blues band if they haven't moved on to other venues. Up around the corner of the football field and down the street is a Cuban place that is decent, they got a classic car to tote folk around in. OR you can stop the basko guy if you're feeling adventurous.

Sherm, my family lives in Coffee and copper for months a few years back, wonderful experience, waking up with monkeys on the wall :livid:
Love to eat the waffles there :highly_amused:
Markit, Indonesian and Balinese food? I assume you're not the enlighten people who drink vanilla shake with mylk instead of actual milk :devilish:
I would recommend eating at:
1. Mangga Madu, its located near the Arjuna statue for a range of Indonesian food with moderate spices.
2. Sawah Indah, its located in Teges near Bebek Tepi Sawah for some grilled fish with sambals
3. Janggar Ulam, also in Teges accross the perol station
4. Babi Guling bu Oka at the Ubud market in the morning
Thats the few that pop up in my mind, for the western food, there are plenty for you to try

Thanks guys - looking for primarily Local/Bali/Indo food with regular(ish) prices clean kitchens(ish) and tasty grub - no Nasi/Mie Goreng please. I'd never seen any duck suckling either but food's good.

are these Ubud locals big enough?
davita
Good one Normy but I can assure...when that fat duck is BBQ'd to a cinder and put on a plate.....there aint so much meat left.
I was in Warung Eropa in Petitenget last week and ordered crispy 'bebeck' (they are famous for this) and it was nowhere near that size....just imagine the fat I didn't indulge!
gtrken
Ahh but the fat is where the taste is.. :)
I have tried fat free milk, fat free mayonnaise , fat free yoghurt and to be honest I might as well have eaten the packet they came in as there may have been more nutritional value/taste in it...
Cheers
Ken

As probably the worst offender I can easily see when a thread is going wildly off-subject so please ladies and gentlemen it's about me, me, me, and Ubud warungs, good eating and economical prices - not goosefat(they aint ducks).

But these ducks are not what Balinese/Indonesians call "bebek", which are the little brown ones, sometimes with green under-feathers.
If you want to eat these fat white ducks, in Balinese they're called "kuwir". Look for local warungs selling "nasi kuwir" (or various other spellings of same).
To us, they're all ducks, but not to the Balinese.

Muscovy ducks Matsaleh. An Aussie guy in Ubud can supply you with free range chicken and muscovy ducks if anyone is interested, as well as other organic stuff.
:topsy_turvy::topsy_turvy:

Keeping this thread off-topic, Muscovy ducks are often marketed as 'quack-less ducks'. They can be artificiality inseminated, crossing with other breeds to produce a large 'mule' mainly for Fois Gras production, (which I am against).

I go for ribs at
Naughty Nuri's Warung | Batubelig, Bali. but got to say nothing beats the ribs at no.ideas villa

This would therefore make me quite tasty.

Good post to get back to our poor ego-centric markit's topic...the original Naughty Nuri is in Ubud and well worth a visit. Sadly the owner died last year but the resto is still running...to get there just follow your nose.....the smell from those BBQ'd ribs is powerful.
I never saw the waitresses in Ubud do the martini shake but it's a popular show in Batubelig...well worth the price of a martini just to see the girl's bottoms... shake! shake! shake!....:excitement:

I bow to your superior knowledge matsaleh...on the difference in duck ornothology.
However, I suggest.... if it quacks like a duck...and it waddles like a duck...and it says 'bebeck' on the menu...I presume it's a duck.
Who knows or cares its origin when it arrives on the plate, blackened like charcoal, and needs toothpicks to find what little meat is left..... and this is considered a Bali delicacy?
Give me a Big-Mac......anytime!:apologetic:
Edit: Apologies...got distracted by frogs croaking...now that whets my appetite...frogs legs!
Anyone know where, in Bali, 'kodok goreng' is served?

I can assure you nasi kuwir is not "blackened like charcoal". It's wonderfully fat, juicy duck with assorted condiments. The best place I've found is in Umalas I in Kerobokan.

Matsaleh is a wealth of wonderful information about good food - wonder why there's more meat on a butcher's pencil than on her? Having broken bread, steak and Bintangs with here I know it aint lack of appetite(s)...
Now if we could move that point of reference a little north and east - Nuri's is OK if you can beat your way through the possers and arty-farty types waiting for Nuri (wasn't his name, was it?) to be resurrected. I found him to be just a boring old drunk but what do I know?
If its wiggling beauties you want to watch I suggest you get involved with Balinese volley ball - the girls love it and the guys are too stupid to enjoy the show so you'll be on your own with lots of interested ladies. Have taken to staying one step ahead with "tips" for the local girls team. I pretend I'm interested in volleyball and they pretend I'm not a disgusting old letcher - works for all parties.
Would appreciate some more "insider" tips (RonB don't you love me any more? I'll call you when I get there anyway so it's no use hiding) on places to eat (local food please) in and around Ubud.
Went to the Pandan place just before the turn off into Ubud yesterday but am always a bit cautious about this food as who knows how long it's been sitting there? Can report all went well and the toilet is only a distant friend today.
Sorry a bit Twitterish in my reporting lately.

Markit, my final on the birds. You are correct they were geese. All honking. No quacking.

Markit, Brian Aldinger, originally from New York, is the gentleman you met at Naughty Nuri's. He passed away last year and the restaurant is named after his wife.
