To Lumumba: Just to give you confirmation that the fiscal law DOES NOT make any difference if the holder of the term deposit is WNI or WNA. I carefully read it today and can definitively confirm you that it is a flat 20% tax for anyone, foreigners or nationals. Thus if you get charged 25%, it is the Bank that screwed you, not the RI government. I have opened depositos myself under my name or under both names (Wife and I) and never get such policy. I opened them with BII, BCA, Mandiri, Permata and of course Bukopin. Conclusion: change bank, not country

The average price for a round of golf in Europe is how much? A lot more expensive than in Bali I would venture. Stop whinging at what locals pay and think how much more YOU have than them. Alternatively take Indonesian salaries become Indonesian. No....I thought not
Actually Jimbo both Oz and NZ now cheaper than Bali for golf (unless you are indonesian)Jimbo youre blind defense and chivalry is to be admired, but most of the people paying less than me turn up in the latest Saloon Merc's and Lexus 4wds. Why would i take an Indonesian salary?. My salary package is tailored to my skills and experience, i 've worked hard to get where i am, and deserve every cent of what i earn. I know several Indonesians that i would happily change pay packets with. You seem to think that most Indonesians are defenseless poor starving individuals and that it is the expats responsibility to sit down,, shut up, and be thankful.I pay taxes when working in Indo, and ask nothing more than equal treatment.Bali's a little different to Makassar Jim, come check it out (ive been to Makassar about 15 times also).Sorry for the thread jack, but couldnt leave that one alone.

best you take your money back if you cant handle a small issue like that you cant handle the bigger issues, ..........just my opinion

I truly don't appreciate or subscribe to Markit's racist remarks, but no surprises from him there. Many countires tax non-residents more than residents because the politicos have to get re-elected and non-residents don't vote. In NYC, there are FIVE different taxes on HOTELS (= Non NY residents) for instance.Regarding tax on interest in Indonesia, yes it is standard for Indonesians and foreigners. However, a foreigner can only open an account if "Resident". I used thge name of my Balinese Nominee to buy GOI bonds for the 12% interest, then lost 30% on exchange. Story of my life!!For completeness, there can also be problems getting money OUT of Indonesia these days. I have a friend who recently sold a Villa in Canggu for over 1 Million USD. Nice profit. When he tried to send the money to Australia, he was told that a new Bank Indonesia regulation required that unless there was a "Transaction" overseas, you can only remit a maximum 100K per month. So it will take almost a year to get his money out. In the meantime, in USD he makes zip in interest, of course.
sydneymike
My opinion on all this is: an absolute Fu** up.Now some one will tell me you have a choice; YES I do have a choice and this I'm going to do:I will send the money back. I don't really need the money here. I will loose on the bank transfers, fine I will not get poor for this.I'm acting on principal. They will never learn in a millions years, as someone wrote in another post.L.
I would also counsel that, when living in a country other than your own, it is best to be more circumspect in expressing ones opinions? And, yes, if it is really so difficult, it might be better for you to find another country of residence where everything is more equitable. I have, for instance, at least temporarily, adopted Australia as my home (And now 3 passports!!). There are things about Oz that I love, and things that I hate, mainly the taxes and the self-righteousness. But I have to accept it because that's the way the way it is. And because most Aussies are much bigger than me?!!!
Markit
What? !!!!I truly don't appreciate or subscribe to Markit's racist remarks, but no surprises from him there.
WTF are you talking about? Mate I think you must have inhaled too much of your own smoke there - I have absolutely no idea what Racist remarks I am supposed to have made - this doesn't mean that I'm not a racists, just help me out so I can get my sheet on and spark up the cross and respond.
sydneymike
It aint fair to us but hey being born with a white skin is like getting a 6er in the lotto anyway so what the hell? Would you rather have been born Indonesian for the cheap golf?
Don't smoke and don't drink for professional reasons.

Thus spoke HinakosBali's a little different to Makassar Jim, come check it out (ive been to Makassar about 15 times also).Really, After 23 visits to Bali and over 26 years since I first came to Indonesia you would think I would know that.

Markit
Hey Sydney thanks for helping me out there buddy, phew now I know that when I say that being born white and western is like winning the lottery I wasn't telling the truth but being racist. Does this make anyone that wins the lottery a racist?Does this make anyone that's a western white a racist?I don't feel too bad cause most of the 6 billion people on this planet seem to think the way I do although I haven't asked them all but here abouts I but can't find anyone but you that disagrees, so you must be right. Grow up little man there's a big world out there that doesn't conform to how you would like to have it be
sydneymike
So, if I understand what you are saying correctly, it's self-evident that being born white and Western is superior (Given that lotteries normally hand the best prizes to the winners)? But this is just a fact of life with which every right minded citizen would agree and is, therefore, not a racist remark? If that's what you are saying, perhaps we should just put it down to ignorance.
Markit
Making the blind see isn't just up to the holy :) The main concept behind a lottery (probably even in Australia), be it for money, refrigerators or, as I maintained, the standard of living that we are all born to is, LUCK! I maintained that we(white, westerners) are only separated from them (third world developing nations) by a silly chance of birth (LUCK!) And should someone wish to complain about the price of golf in Bali then he should shut the f*ck up because he has the chance to swing something else in his soft, pink western hand other than a rice flail. Now if you still don't want to get it it then I suggest you check your tattoos because they are probably leaking...
sydneymike
I have nothing else to add and will leave it for others to judge, but that is not what you said and not what you meant, perhaps innocently, which is why I said we should just put it down to ignorance. Bigotry often is like that. You sound like a pompous a*s and I think there are 240 million people in a certain Asian country, some married to other posters on this forum, who would take great exception to your views.Incidentally, as a final thought, I recall that you were not prepared to pay extra for the convenience of bottled water, so I assume you are not a keen golfer?

Hi y'all,Dont wanna be taking a side in this somewhat strange discussion about the one being borne white is more lucky, then the one being borne brown(black). Being borne white doesn't necessarily mean more lucky, think of the so called 'trailer-trash'(USA).... majority is white and not that lucky(financial) in life. Like I said I dont want to take a side in this discussion, but what sidneymike writes about some 240 million people taking exception...I am wondering how many of those people use the 'kulit putih' cremes? I know a lot of women(Indonesian) who use that creme...just to become whiter...I wonder why? Maybe to get 'lucky' with a guy, hihihi.I have to agree with Markit, that if a westerner complains about prices of golf in Bali is a bit strange...If the golfer is a member of a club in his/her homecountry, he/she has a membercard which gives you a discount? If retired or working here all year round and play alot of golf, take a membership here...If you're Dutch the fee is deductable from your taxes you pay in NL. Other countries probably also have some way to deduct that fee?Anyaways...So far my humble opinion, friendly greetings Gilbert.

Personally, I feel I was lucky to have been born, through no "fault" of my own, in a country like France, which certainly gave me more opportunities than if I had been born in Zimbabwe, or, for that matter, Bali. It also happens that, at present, the countries with the highest income per capita are where the white race is by far predominant (Please, don't start a fight here, as I am perfectly aware that on a biological level, there is no such thing as a "race"), and located in the Northern hemisphere. Based on the CIA report which estimates the average per capita income for 2008, the individual income in Indonesia was $3,900, and that in the USA ,for example, $48,000, i.e. more than 12 times higher. Are the green fees in Indonesia 12 times higher for tourists than for natives? I rest my case...

he should shut the***k up because he has the chance to swing something else in his soft, pink western hand other than a rice flail.
Markit, my tiny peckered friend.this has nothing to do with luck, brown skin/white skin, golf prices etc. the golf price is one of many things which youre about to get a taste of living here buddy.soft pink western hand? hehe....you think all westerners are red nosed fat slobs who've never worked? and you also think that indonesians in general are in the fields every day toiling sun up to sun down?. a pretty good insight into the where you fit in here Markit, and a good explanation as to why you feel you are so elevated in Bali (above the "rice flailing" locals), seems you even pity them and despise the evil westerner. Who you putting this show on for?Youve come here taken an indonesian woman, are obviously benefiting from whatever leverage you can get from that with regards to banking etc under her name to skirt the costs that a western/western couple cannot get around in Bali, yet stand on your flimsy pulpit and preach about things you think your morally absolved from. Quite a few here standing on that pulpit with you.You go to the fish market.....who does the bidding? you or your girl? being in the position you and many other forum members are in (being married or with an indonesian partner), shields you from much of what a western/western couple experiences here. Without that cover provided having a indonesian partner Markit.....id like to see how many years youd survive here without a whimper. So far for me its been 7. No easy bank accounts, no short cuts, no side stepping.Next time you send your missus down to the fish market to do your bidding for you my sheltered friend, i suggest you get out and do a bit for yourslef. And stop using her bank accounts and other benefits she provides that allow you to skirt the system, before preaching to the others on this forum about westerners complaining about the system.Come out from behind her skirt and i my just show you my soft pink western hands. The fact you automatically feel superior (made evident by your pity for rice flailing indonesians) probably denotes the very reason you moved here....similar to that of many others...the feeling of superiority you experience here as opposed to the "average joe" status you recieved in your home country.I was transferred here, my western girlfriend is also working here, we both make our own way without the assistance of an indonesian partner. We both work internationally, very hard, and i can assure you do not have soft pink western hands. I dont know of too many people in similar situations........crazy to think that we should be allowed to pay what Indonesians pay in Indonesia, even crazier to mention it on the forum....completely predictable response by the few hiding behind their Indonesians wives skirts here with their holier than thou attitides.tintins suggestion that i should be thankful green fees arent 12 times higher is crazygilbert, its impossible to join a golf club here without a KITAS, so i must pay triple.im just waiting for the skirt holders to give me the "you chose to live here" line.

Youve come here taken an indonesian woman,
 I think you may have got that part wrong Hinakos. Markit is afterall married to the Best Woman in the Universe.being in the position you and many other forum members are in (being married or with an indonesian partner), shields you from much of what a western/western couple experiences here.
I can not really think what being married to an Indonesian has shielded me from.

hinakos,My comment was what is referred to in mathematics or philosophy as "raisonnement par l'absurbe." (whatever the translation in English is). As for my possible employment at the proposed central Java nuclear reactor, rest assured, my application for Head of Operations has been in for some time, and I am pleased to report that I am one of the top candidate being considered for the position. :)
