It's like comparing apples and oranges here.
But on the other hand, when you come to Milan and in the city centre at that. Try to find a public rest room if not in the Underground or the Bars only. And what are they? It's the one where one has to squat!! :D
A Korean business man on meeting hubby in Seoul he said right away: "Oh, you are from Milan? Tell me, why is it so difficult to find a public restroom in Milan?. It is not like in Korea. We have it everywhere." And he's right, I might add.
On a wedding of my nephew in Bandung at the bride's home for the morning wedding rites/ceremony. I just arrived from Thailand and straight from Jkt Airport to there and needed to use the bathroom. O...O...!! No, can do!!! So,
I cringed and I asked my other nephew to rush me all the way to the Bandung's Hyatt Hotel and couldn't careless about the wedding rituals anymore.
So as you can see. One just needs a common sense and be done with it, that's all. C'est la vie!
So I see we're still pretty much involved in the subject of toilets, shit, etc...
Seems like it's the best subject and the best worded string to date, so why not?
I'm sure Thorsten agrees with me. And Bolli, you ain't bad yourself.
So, let's join hands and have a party in you-know-what and let it all hang out everybody!!
It's an aha moment for me.

Roy, an update you'll surely appreciate. But you must have misspoken, surely this is not news to you that the Boston Garden (and its toilets) was demolished in 1997, few years after its new successor arena took over, the FleetCenter, now called TD Banknorth Garden (much bigger with seat prices out of sight).
Some toilets the Garden had! When you had a seat on the 2nd balcony (as I did often, watching the Bruins play), one entered the place from a special entrance, at one far end of the arena, and if one's seat was located on the side of the arena, one had to walk first across the men's johns, which were located at each corners, even if you were a female... Some genius architect designed it

Join hands? After this thread? First wash them!

Well I shall sleep soundly in my bed tonight with the knowledge that you all have nice clean bottoms. The nights I have tossed and turned wondering about the state of Jimbo's underpants. I'm glad to be a member of the Skid-Free Forum :D

i used to work in an office in north sydney and a few of the guys ('westies') used to go into the mens room and have 'dump-offs'.. the winner was the one who was able to produce a combination of the loudest sound and the widest perimeter impact in the bowl..
talk about class..
other contests that i heard of included a urinating contest whereby the winner was the one who was able to maintain a continual stream longer than that his competitors..

Interesting posts. Typical Balilife comments.......................................The Tom cruise (so he says) look alike!
Myself Being Indonesian(javanese born in bandoeng),I have always had an open mind for "any type of toilet",squat,or western, out in a field is Ok aswell. How long have toilets been around? Before the invention of toilets, humans did their bowel movements anywhere.
Most of Asia still has squat toilets,So what! In my oppinion they are cleaner,You dont touch anything, hovering does no one any harm, sitting on a western style toilet now we are talking bacteria(staphl.).
The toilets in bali are clean compared to the toilets in Calcutta India (check out that Calcutta-train station) now were talking another ballpark-The poorest of poor/homeless/lepers have no place to live. You open the door to a toiletstall and you see them sleeping curled around the squat whole (many not just one),And yes I used it.......................So what! I could write a book about all the interesting places I have done my bowel movements.
We are making a big deal over nothing here, look at the nonsense happening on this planet right now,and we are worried about Body Odor smell, toilets, paper or not?..................

Hi gina, Not making a big deal really, sometimes its just lovely to be able to chit chat about banality and toss ideas about, given that as you say this planet seems to be going downhill very fast.
sometimes we need to laugh and lighten up !
Whats everyones idea of where the world is heading ?
i.e. from what i read , financial collapses, sub prime mortgages, re possessions of homes, house prices dropping. etc etc. ! People losing trust in the system, i fear the world is about to take a massive change and restructuring.
anyone interested in adding to this topic ?

just the re-balances that need to occur at the end of one cycle, before the next one can commence.
credit markets have stabilized significantly on the last few months. people are losing trust in which system? i'm not sure what you're referring to. if it's the banking system, there hasn't been a true bank run in this cycle - northern rock came close, but didn't fit the bill.. bear stearns' run was from institutional investors - as an investment bank they weren't holding a lot of personal deposits.. in any case the fed intervened at the right time..
people tend to see the past as being better than the present.. sometimes it's very much the case, other times it's not..it is the nature of humans to fondly reminisce..

I've been in Ngurah Rai twice in the last three days and the bathrooms were fine, but maybe we have different standards.

Maybe so....
It's a point of much comment from the steady stream of visitors we get from abroad so I guess I'm not alone.
I'm in Malaysia right now (lovely clean loos in both KLIA and Penang airports) and fly back in to Bali on Monday so I guess we will see again.
I understand that the airport authority themselves recognise the problem and have budgeted for substantial upgrades.

Simon, I can't vouch for the toilets at the Jakarta airport, but at Ngurah Rai, I haven’t noticed the men's rooms being on the order of gagging at all. In the last two months I've been there four times, and each time the men's rooms were fine. Maybe I was lucky all four times and hit them right after they were cleaned.
On the other hand, I can't recall how many times back in the states I've gone into public toilets, especially at gas stations, and decided it was better go behind the station.
I've done Ngurah Rai at least a dozen times in the last month and trust me you were very lucky. They stink, and the floors should've been replaced years ago. Attendants stand in them with a fag as often as not. They are truly disgusting places at times and a great welcome to a tourist (just like those broken down piss-stinking sheds at Tanah Lot and Ulawatu).
Lets not compare gas station loos with an airport (international gateway to a major tourist destination) toilet, it's more appropriate to compare it to Changi, Sydney, KLIA or pretty much any airport loo outside Indonesia.
mimpimanis
Have to say I have never had a problem with the ladies at Ngurah Rai and I pass through pretty often.

Maybe mimpi and drbruce are already a'bali'tized.. I find it filthy, and I'm there at 4-6 times a month. Even the toilets in the domestic Citibank Lounge are well below par. I cant comment on the Mandiri Lounge and I haven't used the WC in the HSBC Lounge (if there even is one)..
Roy
You can count me in with Doc and Mimpi as being “a'bali'tized”...that is for certain! Maybe it’s you and SG with the issue problem...that being, still too Westernized?

How do you exist in Bali/Indonesia With all these hangups about filth? Why even go to Bali,Why not just stay in your clean/controlled environment of airconditioned /japanese spick and span toilets? Many enjoy bali for all it natural beauty, its beautifull culture/kind hearted gentle people, paradise on earth. If it was a tourist clammered island sanetized like hawaii you would loose all the bali qualities that make it so magical,so breathtaking.
Bali is fine the way it is right now,in all its toilet- no toilet glory! No other place I' keep comming back too....................................And why do you? :| just curious?

On that same ilk Gina, it never ceases to amaze me when I run into expats...especially those recently arrived expats, who just can’t seem to stop belly aching about this or that about Bali. It’s never ending sometimes...on and on and on.
For those western expats whose employer transferred them to Bali, I have a lot of patience and understanding, as after all...they came here as part of their career, and likely will be transferred out of Bali soon enough. But for those who chose to make Bali home, I just can’t understand it, and frankly, I have zero tolerance for all the whining.
Bali isn’t perfect, that is for sure, but good grief! If you’ve freely chosen to live here, then get over it...or as you suggest Gina...GO HOME!

Roy,
I give you that - we're here by choice.. However there is a 'but'.. The forum is supposed to represent views of those with experiences in Bali, good and bad..
I'm sure you'll pardon me for not providing a response to the Lady of the Loony Bin..
