Powerplant in Pemaron

Somehow, my text got lost on the last posting....sorry, here I try again...
Hallo everybody on the forum. I am Silvia, the owner of Kubu Lalang Restaurant and Bungalows, Tukadmungga. I am living on Bali for 11 years now, Austrian origin.
The last months I have been a regular on reading this forum, but I could not really be bothered to write...so many other things to do...seems like it is time now. I`m am not here to talk about my private issues, ( at least not for the time being now...)
Probably all of you have heard already about the powerplant project in Pemaron. It is at a point now, I cannot take it anymore, I am getting so depressed about the whole thing, I seem to be freaking out...HELP!!!!!!!!!
What can be done? Seems all we did was just in vain...The people being resonsible – governour of Bali and our dear...Bupati of Buleleng and Power Indonesia are not willing to talk or even listen to us. I was literally writing hundreds of emails to all kinds of environmental organisations, I could get hold of through the internet and all the guests I was ever receiving in my place. No replies to really be mentioned....Yesterday the “first stone” was layed there, despite hundreds of locals being on the spot, dressed in traditional Balinese clothes, demonstrating peacefully, accompanied by 10 priests.. Beforehand paid “tukang pukul”( troublemakers ) were brought there by trucks – one truck got 200.000.- Rp,. armed with knives and sticks...Police would allow them to go there, other people wanting to join the demonstration were rejected to reach the place....The Balinese husband of one of my friends was threatened to be murdered.
Anybody got ideas what to do????? Our next project will probably be to get in contact with travelagencies specialising in Bali and try to convince them not to bring any more of their clients here and having them tell the governour why... ( even I am living on the tourist trade, me and my staff we could survive New York, the Bali bomb, o.k, I start growing more vegetables in my garden, I can live on very little money here, but this story, I will not be able to swallow....I just cannot f....cope with it, seems like it is eating me up from inside...)
Anybody willing to support us and wanting more information about the project please contact me. Desperately.

what happens in Pemaron is a tiny mirror of what happens to the whole world right now with the war on Iraq.

Business into their pockets, not people or environment, have always been the priority for people in power. People who stand in their path will be crushed.

Of course things like Pemaron, dirty beaches etc etc will ultimately have a negative effect on Bali Tourism. But that will not bother the culprits for the decline, as their pockets have been filled.

Again, what happens to you does not only happen in Bali. It happens all over the world, in every country.

My advise: move away. Many ants leaving a tree finally leave behind a rotten tree.

I think the power plant has to go, not us, in or near Pemaron, and the Balinese think the same. (Except the ones paid to do so)

And it will, there will be action again and again. Remember when the dutch demanded a forfeit for the "stolen goods" from a stranded chines trader ?

White dresses and fight until dead. I am with them.

...the powerplant has to go!!!!

Thanks, Bert, for not being an ant and leaving rotten trees behind on your treck through this life....We `d better wear the tiger`s costume for the time being, considering the circumstances...
Om Swastiastu and Merdeka

Tiger's costume

I agree ~ NO powerplant but Power to the People!

....Singa Raja ~ Tiger King.....

What does such a powerplant cost ?~ in money, but also in negative effects on environment, economy, (un)employment ?

How about Solar Energy......... I am sure solar energy will fill the pockets too, in several ways.....

powerplant

Hi Ringo...
and all!!
Solar power yes. And possibly geothermal energy. Bali (and all others on the ring of fire) might tap into plenty of that. Even though, I am not educated enough for the moment about cost, geological impact and practicality of that.
Here's from Uma in a blue funk back in Los Angeles. The first thing greeting me here (that made me want to turn around on the next plane back to Bali) was the "prewar" firing up of gasoline prices here in LA. It is expected that the price per gallon will go over $3 soon. Oh, we're being had, aren't we? Someone is making a nice bundle right now!
Of course, Europeans will say: "Oh really? Welcome to the rest of the world of fossil fuel abusers. What else is new?"

Personally, I don't see honorable suicide by Pupusan as the way to respond to the powerplant issue, or any other issue in the world today. A self-emulated monk in Vietnam certainly received attention, but he didn't stop the Vietnam War. On the other hand, civil action in former Warsaw Pact countries last decade led to major successes there.
I would look at other strategies used in Bali in the past, such as a long history of evasive manoeuvres to keep the Dutch from taking over completely (of course only until the final entrapment of 1906). There is power that united desa, banjar and subak may yield, even today.

Virtual Wall

Hi Uma, I hope you don't suffer too much from culture shock, being back in L.A. once more..... I hope you will be able to return here soon, it was a pleasure meeting you!

Solar Energy, or clean power in general, ofcourse is the best and only solution to make this part of the world better, in all respects. However I am afraid that Money & Prestige count more for the decision-makers than a Clean & Peaceful world...... It is hard to break down that Virtual Wall.....

So prices will continue to go up, in LA, in Bali, in Holland, everywhere ~ it's no use beating around the Bush hoping these gentlemen will ever listen to the voice of the world....... they are 'mas sordo que una tapia' as the Spanish say ~ or 'oost-indisch doof' in Dutch.

Money makes the world go round (does it?)

folks be careful

it's good to be brave - but keep your own well-being in mind as well. Expats are guests only. Please look at Indonesian law. You have NO right to protest and can even be deported for doing so.
Don't want to frighten you, just a very well intended warning.
