Some food for thought:

Negative : http://www.uneptie.org/pc/tourism/sust- ... wbacks.htm

Positive : http://www.uneptie.org/pc/tourism/sust- ... global.htm

These are pages maintained by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). On the same pages you will find links to subjects like economics and environment, related to tourism. Allthough its not specific about Bali, its a nice read and the pages have plenty of links to other resources about tourism related stuff.

Tourism can add to the vitality of communities in many ways. One example is that events and festivals of which local residents have been the primary participants and spectators are often rejuvenated and developed in response to tourist interest.

The jobs created by tourism can act as a vital incentive to reduce emigration from rural areas. Local people can also increase their influence on tourism development, as well as improve their job and earnings prospects, through tourism-related professional training and development of business and organizational skills.

There are numerous examples where local residents have lost access to local natural resources because of tourism development. On Boracay Island in the Philippines, one quarter of the island has been bought by outside corporations, generating a crisis in water supply and only limited infrastructure benefits for residents. Similarly, in Bali, Indonesia, prime agricultural land and water supplies have been diverted for large hotels and golf courses, while at Pangandaran (Java, Indonesia), village beach land, traditionally used for grazing, repairing boats and nets, and festivals, was sold to entrepreneurs for construction of a five-star hotel (Shah, 2000).

Bert,

You should read the book of Michel Picard, Bali

It describes impacts on economic, socio-cultural and environmental levels concerning tourism...
