Was this 1928 pic an really early example of colour film, or has it been colored in from a B&W original?

Was this 1928 pic an really early example of colour film, or has it been colored in from a B&W original?
It would seem to me that this was taken using a color film. The colors on the skins and on the sarongs are too finely defined to have been colored in.

Does it really matter? With photoshop you can now fake most any picture and some of the programs/apps will do it all at the press of button. I think it's a lovely picture and shows the naivete that I just love about those old snaps (and you can still find enough of here on the island). Please more...

I'd love to do a collage of "then and now" on a larger format background but I need the original shots to be as high-resolution as possible otherwise they lose every time you change/copy them somewhere else. Cheers

A lot can be done with software like Photoshop, onONE Perfect Photo Suite, even the much maligned Gimp. The bottom line is GiGo (garbage in, garbage out). If you have a poor quality image to start with, it's an up-hill struggle to make it "better". For example with audio, if you have a crummy mp3 file at 128kbs, there's no way you can turn it into audiophile quality. It's impossible. With images, however, you can "improve" them, up to a point. Unless your're synaesthetic, you can't hear images. And "seeing" music won't necessarily help you turn out a great painting.I thought about one of the images above and decided to have a quick play-around with it. The one in the post is a small 50 KB JPEG. That's almost like starting with nothing. So I went through the following steps:* Saved the image from the post (as a JPEG)* Increased the size to 140% using PhotoZoom Pro 5 and saved it as a TIF file* Opened that in Photoshop CS6* Checked the Levels (seemed OK)* Removed a few blemishes using the Healing Brush* Made a duplicate layer* Used Topaz Adjust 5 and tweaked the image a little* Merged the layers and saved the image (as a TIFF)I tried a few other steps on the saved image but mostly gave up in the end. (GiGo factor plus one too many beers). I did a fast conversion to a warm B&W which looks OK to me. It took me about 10 minutes in total (including a few others that I didn't like much). Now what I have to do is convert my worked sample pics to web-friendly sizes (so I can drop them into this comment), thereby losing quality again. In case you're wondering why I increased the photo in the first place...There is some very good software that can increase image sizes without apparently losing "quality". (This is good if you want to blow-up a photo to print it later. Photoshop has some ability to do this, but there are dedicated programs which can do it better, such as PhotoZoom Pro and what was formerly known as Genuine Fractals, now Perfect Resize in the onONE Photo Suite. I have blown-up images by as much as 100 times the original size and they still look pretty good. These programs use sophisticated algorithms to do their magic. They don't just add more pixels.)Another reason is that modifying JPEG images is a losing battle. It's far better to convert a JPEG to a TIFF and edit that. Each time a JPEG is modified, more image data is thrown away. The image becomes highly degarded very quickly. Please keep in mind that I am NOT a Photoshop guru, but it's amazing what can be done with nearly nothing to start with.Oh and I forgot to mention. "Working" on the "original" image didn't hurt my eyes, too much."Original image""Modified image"Black and White version

Gardens of the East ExhibitionSome wonderful images there for sure. Difficult or near impossible to get hold of the originals. But there is another way to get reasonable copies with a bit of digital imaging "magic".I copied several of the (small) preview images off the ABC website and played around with them.Nothing radical - saved them as TIF images and removed a few spots here and there with the Healing Brush in Photoshop CS6.Apart from that, I didn't use any fancy filters or plug-ins.I did resize them using PhotoZoomPro 5, in one case to as much as 1000%, to see how they'd look.Remember that I started off with tiny images. In the case of the Javanese girl from 1885, I blew it up to 1,000%. That gave me a print size of 2.4 x 3.25 metres. Obviously, I can't print that out at home. The point is that at even at such a huge size, the image still looks pretty good. The file size was a whopping 182 MB. I couldn't save it "for the web" in Photoshop, so I had to make it smaller by 80%. Then saved it as a JPG file at moderate quality. The other images are blow-ups at 140% and 200%.(I should add that you need a computer with a fair amount of grunt to pull some of these off. Lots of RAM, a fast graphics card and zippy CPU.)Here are some of my results (click to see).Borobodur (1872) at 150%Javanese girl (1885) at 150%Javanese girl (1885) at 200%Javanese girl (1885) at 1000%
