This was the "world-famous" (at least in Ubud) Ibu Dewi Warun (Ibu on the right, her daughter Dewi in the background), located on the road going down Jl Raya, on the right, before the Campuhan Bridge. Her warung was taken over by one of the Ubud Tjokordas, Tjokordana Raka Kerthyasa. Pak Tjok, as he is known, took over Ibu's warung by eminent domain, in order to give access to his new hotel, Ibah, back in 1992. Ibu Dewi ended up as a homeless destitute. His father, Tjokorda Ngurah, was the son of Tjokorda Gede Sukawati who had established his own branch of the Sukawati royal family in Ubud in the 19th century. His uncle, Tjokorda Agung Sukawati, who was Ubud's last ruling royal, gave him the piece of land where The Ibah is sited. Pak Tjok was the first royal to bring home a commoner and foreigner. The pretty British blonde, Gillespie, is the daughter of a distinguished British Army Lieutenant-Colonel. The pair met by chance in June 1977 when she was holidaying in Ubud. Gillespie was given the name of Jero (from the palace) Asri (perfect). The Gianyar photo shows satellite receiving dishes pointing fairly straight up - probably a bit west. The first Palapa satellites (Series A) were launched in 76 & 77. Series B were launched in 83, 84 (but that one failed), 87, 90, and 92.So it would seem that central Gianyar was up with the times in the 80s.

just a piece of local Legian history. At the end of Jl. Padma in 1982, looking towards the beach you can see on the right hand side a white fence. A newspaper man from Surabaya was going to build a 5 story hotel there called Puri Zuqni. (He had been awarded 20 hectare of beachfront property from where the Bali Mandira Hotel is now to the north for about 1 km for publicly opposing Soekarno and the communists in his newspaper.) He went broke, and was bought out by amongst others, the JDjarum Group, who built the Padma Resort on a portion of his land. :topsy_turvy:
