If you walk too fast you will miss the taxi counter as too many people stand in front of it trying to get a better price. I always use ATM but only at banks or inside stopping centres, mandiri gives us the best exchange rate. I only know 4 money changers in Surabaya so cards are the best, My wife always looks for the resto offering 50% off if you use your credit card.

The best rate I have found is Mandiri, I use my BoQ card in there ATM and get very close to the Bali street rate. BCA has a good rate for cash at there city head office but that take 30mins to ride there. I have a BCA, Mandiri and BII bank cards and when you go to dinner someone will have a deal 10,20,30,50% discount when you pay with a card. The same with Hyper or indo mart, they don't charge the 2% if you use credit card. Most shops will give interest free, deposit plus 12 months at!!!!!! they charge your credit card and the bank holds the total amount so you won't spend it and you pay the instalments.

Hey Mats. I think you're being a bit alarmist here. I've been using ATMs in Bali for many years with zero problems. Sure there are [I][B]some[/B][/I] skimmers every now and then. If one is really worried, choose an ATM inside of a bank, rather than one in the street (just in case). My one and only problem with an ATM in Indonesia was on Bintan Island (Riau). The machine swallowed my card.

I reckon you should stop off at Sanur on your way to Candidasa. This one seem reputable, but I've never used them. Poso - BaliBestRate.com If you don't like them you can just ask your driver to keep heading north on the main drag of Sanur until you find one that's acceptable.

I have been using the website at balibestrate.com for several years as it is very accurate to the current rates at the 5 or 6 major money-changers on the Sanur strip. They may vary by say Rp50 per dollar so it's an easy scooter round trip to find the best one on the day. The rates change several times a day so, if the dollar is dropping you can often find one where they haven't updated their rate on the board yet. Interestingly, PT. Dirgahayu Valuta Prima - Authorized Money Changer - Bali Best Rate is giving a different rate to Poso - BaliBestRate.com but this is probably because it's the weekend. If you use an ATM and withdraw Rupiah from an Aussie bank account you will lose between 4% and 7%. I checked this several times before getting into the habit of always taking cash into Bali. Firstly, the exchange rate is worse than money-changers but they also charge other transfer fees. Of course,you need to wait a few days to view the overall debit to your account on your PC or phone. Probably, the loss would be less if you could withdraw several hundred dollars at a time. I can only speak for NAB. Your bank may be better.

Slightly off topic; If you want to change big sums of cash you can call the bank head office (generally Jakarta) and they will quote you a higher exchange rate. You will get a unique code which you will need to give at the local branch. After they check their system they will exchange at the higher exchange rate you got over the phone. (Bank Mandiri)

Good advice. The money-changers will also give a little better rate for larger amounts but not more than say 10 or 20 in my experience! Confucious say: "If you don't ask you don't get" and it's better in my pocket!
