Does anyone who live in Bali ever contracted it, given that it seems to be common now to hear people who live in Jakarta got it. It worries me seeing that it requires a hospital stay of at least one week for the recuperation... and that is if all goes well. As far as I remember when I was visiting Jkt frequently in 1990's, this illness used to be one in a million case, which would only happen to a child living in a rural place/school, etc. Maybe I'm wrong. Any input on this would be appreciated (coz, I'm chicken)... Mentioned this to my sister in Jakarta and she just laughed.

a friend of ours in Kuta had it last month and was in hopsital for two weeks ..
i have known many people in the past few years who have had it ... and not just in rural areas ..

Dengue fever generally lasts a week or more. It's not fun, but it is not deadly.
Dengue fever should not be confused with Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), which is a separate disease, but with the same viruses, and frequently deadly. However, with quick, proper care DHF is not fatal (maybe 1% of cases are).
Both DF and DHF start with the same symptoms until the third day. The risk fators for DHF are being Caucasian, female, under 12 years old, and strangely enough having already been exposed to DF, therefore carrying DF anti-bodies.

Talking about dengue fever and medical care, my last week and a half has been rather hectic in that department.
There is a cute feral cat (but kind of beat-up, with hair like a rastafari) which has been around my neighborhood for at least 1& ½ year, on and off. Last winter was particularly cold in Boston, with lots of snow. So, last December, seeing her foot prints in the snow, I started feeding her, each day. Little by little, she became used to the food and to me (in that order). Finally, a week and a half ago, after eating, she actually jumped of her own accord on my lap to be petted (Success :D ). But the next day, she also nipped my thumb in the process, drawing blood. So now, I am undergoing a rabies treatment of shots (rabies can incubates in an animal for as long as 6 months).
Then, this past Tuesday, I got a email from the doctor who did my heart PV ablation two years ago (which, with time, showed that it was not perfect), asking me to come on Friday, to Akron, Ohio, so he could perform a "touch up" to my heart. The guy (he is Italian, and one of the top three electrophysiologists in the world) operates at 4 different hospitals in the US, and is always on the road, teaching colleagues, giving conferences, etc. I had not heard from him for more than a month, so when I received his email I grabbed the opportunity. I stumbled to arrange everything (babesitter for my 2 cats, plane, hotel, etc) and showed up, as requested, at Akron General at 6:30 am, although I knew I was the third and last patient of the day, but with hospitals it's "hurry up and wait" (each procedure lasts an average of 5 hrs, and they keep you most of that time awake on the table!). Well, I waited until 6:00 pm (12 hrs!) before going in the operating room! My procedure lasted only 4 hrs, start to finish, and I'll spare you the details, but burning tissues inside the heart is not my favorite entertainment… :(
Spent Friday night at the hospital and came back home last night (I was supposed to stay another night, but managed to tell them I just couldn't).
The white kitty was waiting for me at my door this Sunday morning… :D :D

First, sorry for my absence (I did something to my computer and it went blank, so I had to rush taking it to have it repaired and it took 3 days and Euros 105). Plus having to re-installed all the softwares again, but now I'm good to go...phew!).
Thanks for your response on dengue fever. It's not very encouraging though as the idea of having fever for more than 2 days really frightens me. But you all sound so calm about it. So, in a way, it does put me to rest - a bit.
Daniel, so sorry to hear of your tribulations with the cat, operation and all. Hope you feel better now, even though I can only imagine the kind of discomfort and concern you must have gone through and had.
Get well soon from all in Balipod.
Ciao,
Milan

Hi Milan,
Thanks for your good wishes. So far so good, I haven't bitten anybody, so the vaccine must be working (thank you Louis Pasteur), or white kitty is not infected. :)

Had a miserable night..shivering then sweating, headache, body ache, fatigued but cannot sleep. My wife thinks Dengue Fever so going for test later to Siloam.
If confirmed...what happens next...any advice appreciated.
Nakal
Does sound like dengue, had the same back in 2010.
After getting confirmation (was a bit difficult since I had typhoid at the same moment too...) I spend 4 days in Surya Husada hospital with a drip in my arm.
Took an additional 2-3 days to regain my strenght normal appetite back.
Good luck!

Doesn't sound like Dengue to me (but, surprisingly I'm not a doctor). Sounds more like food poisoning - with D you have bad body/bone ache.
They can't do much for at hospital so give it a day and see what happens - spend the money you save on screens for your windows.

Good luck Davita. Let us know how you go.
Not that it really matters, but didn't you say it was cheaper to get your tests done at Prodia?
Dick Rector
I hope for you it isn't but IF it is Dengue, make a juice or tea from papaya-leafs and drink it. It taste horrible but it does the job and you'll feel soon much better.

I'm off there in a grab taxi in 20 mins.

Well, I for one will be on both knees praying for your safe return but if Karma is against you.
I dibs the missus, she'll be rolling in it.

Davita - glad you are ok maybe Dr Markit
had the correct diagnosis early on in the thread.
As for the wife if she wants to trade you in for a younger Scotsman as long as she brings the properties to the table I'm in.

paulseawind wrote1.DVT, go get a cardiac ultrasound/scan.
2. BTW, I thought you had Kerobokan, Sanur AND Jakarta. That adds to 3.
1. I have that done yearly under the Siloam package and no problems.
2. Sanur is where I'd like to live and the new villa I had in mind there still hasn't sold.

I tend to exaggerate for effect....glad to see you were impressed.

Just read from my browser the following....
A little-known virus new to the Americas is spreading and may be causing deadly birth defects, health officials say.
It's called Zika virus, and it's moving across much of Brazil and north into Central America, carried by the same mosquitoes that carry other viruses such as dengue and yellow fever.
Given my recent negative result of being a virus carrier I'm happy to note that I'm not responsible for those birth defects.

paulseawind wroteI don't think I will go flying with you now. Your 'straight and level' might be more convoluted than my diving and climbing. I am a tree-top hugger. I love low-level.
Flying with me...you kid...I haven't even driven a car since I sold my old Cadillac some 8 years ago.
And don't ask me to fly with you....I hate flying...getting up at near midnight to fly half way around the world was no fun. I only did it 'coz the pay was good and the flight attendants were pretty.

Good news is my result is negative for the Dengue antigen. I'll see the doctor tomorrow for analyses of the other results.
Thanks to everyone for encouragement...I still feel like poop, and very tired, but now think it's due to not having any alcohol for 2 weeks...clearly I'm suffering from Withdrawal Syndrome.
For those interested I was in Prodia for exactly 35 mins to be registered and have the blood drawn. The cost was Rp 442,000. A couple of hours later they e-mailed the results on 2 pages and I printed them out.
The grab-taxi didn't work out as no drivers available.... so used Blue Bird who were excellent.
btw the missus comes from a very wealthy and powerful family...they also own both our properties in Indonesia..... so no need to wait for me to keel...:cupcake:
Markit
I dibsed the missus first and I'm sure having been married to Davita she's not been spoiled, or hardly run-in for that matter.
As to my PRESCIENT AND 100% CORRECT diagnosis Davita seems to have passed over that without even slowing down.
Jeez, it's really hard being recognized for greatness before you die around here.
