What ever the supermarket, they will never be able to match up to the fresh fish straight from the sea and also meat straight from the butcher.

BTW my focus is on fish in this thread, and admittedly have been totally disillusioned by all the others. However being the eternal optimist ( I really want to believe there is edible out there somewhere), I will give certainly give it a shot, and report on my findings. For the last couple of years the only fish on my table has been previously frozen Dorado from Lotte, and find that it is frequently on the menus of numerous restaurants masquerading as something else, yet the same damned thing. Which to me means they can't find anything decent either. Sooooo, if you have actually found good tasting fresh fish you will certainly be appreciated.

The best way to get good fresh fish here is to hang out on beautiful sun drenched beaches looking at 3/4 naked women all day drinking ice cold beer. When towards late afternoon those funny little ships filled with brown people come ashore you wander up and ask em if you can buy what they have - funnily they usually agree with huge smiles and bigger fish. It's a tough job and not everyone is up to it but it's what you have to do if you want good fish. Best are - Mahi mahi (this is also mostly what you get in restos as it freezes well) cost about 20k/kiloBig Eyed Red Fish (no shit that's their name) run to about 2-3 kilos cost about 50k/kiloBlack Snapper - for my money the best fish available on the islands, absolutely magnificent - solid white meat, not fishy, usually about 800g - 1.3 kilos - 35k/kiloRed Snapper - the usual but great freshMackerel - some love it and for others it's bait - usually about 4 - 5k each depending on sizeTuna - very seasonal and depending on your luck maybe Yellow Fin or just normal - usually 35k/kiloFor sure there are lots more but nursey is calling and it's nap time.

Maybe on the east side of the island this is all possible. In West Bali the fisherman fish at night, and the catch arrives about 10am.and is as stiff as..............well, something stiff, and totally tasteless.BTW, Mahi Mahi is the Hawaiian name for Dorado; so if it is inexpensive and fresh in Bali why does Lotte import it frozen? Not debating your facts, but want to be sure because the Tuna I have been to Candi Dasa area, and checked out that the roadside vendors were selling, was anything but fresh, but that wasn't what would be considered more than a mere sampling; not a real product test.If I can find fresh fish there as you say, it isn't beyond my consideration to venture there with ice filled cooler. To further add to the stew much of what is offered at Jimbaran as shell fish comes from Jawa, and the fish is slathered with formaldehyde to keep the eyes and gills appearing fresh for those that would inspect.

I can recommend the Amlapura market on most any day before 10a.m. for some of the best fish - if you haven't been able to score from the friendly brown fishermen. I would guess that Lotte imports it frozen for the reasons I gave - it is one of the few fish that taste good after it has been frozen. That's why you see it advertised in all the restaurants - the mugs think it's fresh. From a 1.5 kilo Mahi mahi you get about 1 kilo meat - price accordingly. I'm sure you are not making the mistake of thinking what the locals call "baby tuna" is what they say it is? It's fecking Mackerel or "bait" as the rest of the world calls it - except the English...

I will give Amlapura a shot. You are probably right about Lotte in that they buy frozen in quantities perhaps not available in Bali?Understand tuna from mackerel......duh.

To be fair the original poster came back with nothing to warrant any further interest in his or her subject. Might have been because he/she realized that it was a bit fecking stupid or because they didn't get the answer they were banking on but in any case, once the subject has been thoroughly squeezed or the OP has lost the will to live (figuratively) I see no reason to adhere slavishly to a dead-dog theme. But if anyone else has a gem of wisdom to throw into the pot, well then, Tally HO!

It is actually on Jalan Diponegoro, but down a small gang. It will blow you out of the water.I am serious make sure you go there. Take your camera. It is not something you expect to find in the middle of a large city. They also have the best salami that I have found in Bali.
