Just thought I would say. I read some articles that the ban would only take place in Jakarta, so it seems not.

I hope you're right Spicy but that wasn't what was originally reported...it was supposed to be nationwide but maybe they haven't legitimized with the Ministry...like lots of things this Govt says but never completes.
I bought a 6 pack of Bintang yesterday in my local Kerobokan Indomaret.

I doesn't matter to me too much personally one way or the other. We have a licence to sell alcohol so in some ways it will benefit our business. I just don't the like the way this is headed in the larger scale of things. I am all about freedom of choice and this seems to be diminishing here.

Do local warung have to comply with law? As in small nasi and crate of Bingtang to go?

The recent news was just mini markets. I am not sure about warungs. There was some stories a while ago about banning alcohol from warungs also but not sure about the outcome of this. I know of many places here in the north that openly sell all kinds of alcohol and they do not have any kind of licence. We got a licence a while ago as imagined it will get stricter at some point.

Still available in Kuta, but there again they ignore all the rules no matter what it is, we have been getting a lot of muggings and them taking folks scooters of them and no mercy being shown in the process, freaking place is really out of control. But the good old Polici are on top of it as they put a few posters up in Renon to tell people to be wary of it ?. Get out patrolling the bastard streets might help.

Nice to see someone showing restraint and cutting back.

Thank you. It did mean showing some real grit and guts however the goal has been achieved. The doctors said if I cut back my drinking it will not mean that I live any longer but it will seem like a lot bloody longer.

On top of that if the people that know you ever met you sober they would:
1) Not recognize you
2) Beat you to death with their sandals
3) All of the above under the heading: vermin control

There are now reports circulating of banning beach bars.
mrsgabry
Gurkha wroteThis ban will apply across the board for any place selling beer that is not an hotel, or a big supermarket ( Lotte, Hypermart etc.) The smaller places can sell beer if they have a licence, which is obtainable from the Ministry of Finance in Jakarta. Applications must be done in person.
So this is going to be the end of the beach bars then. I suppose this will not sit well with locals and tourists.....

Or maybe they do?

Personally, I can't see it being enforced, but who knows here?

A proposal that the ban on beer sales in mini markets be extended to include beach sellers has been discounted by the Regional Tourism Promotion Board. Chairman, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati , said the beach sellers have their own code and it is not a threat as most of their customers are foreign tourists. He confirmed the sale of beer on the beach is a long term practice and does not have a negative impact. The sale of beers in mini markets he agreed affects not only the local community but also creates unfair competition. According to new regulations, minimarts will no longer be able to sell beer beginning in April. The regulation signed by Indonesia’s trade minister, Rachmat Gobel bans small retail chains from selling alcohol under 5 per cent, previously exempt. Bali’s PHRI (Hotel and Restaurants Association) says they do not agree it should extend to beach sellers as this is not affecting the local community and poses no threats to hotels. [/QUOTE]

Common sense prevails.

I understand the new Law doesnt start till April and will have a 'settling in period' of ???? To my knowledge it applies to warungs, beach stalls and just about everything else IF no liquor license already held...so expect the worse! I also notice many mini marts still have huge stocks so will be interesting to see how this 'new' law is enacted & enforced!!??

Slightly off topic, but Singapore just instituted a similar ban prohibiting take away alcohol sales and public consumption of alcohol from 10:30pm to 7am. Went to my local supermarket today (a tiny place of maybe 100 sqm) and saw more than 20 neon yellow signs in the store reminding shoppers of the ban, as well as all staff wearing sticker buttons stating the same. Too bad the shop closes at 8pm so they couldn't sell after 10:30pm anyway.... Meanwhile, the 7-11 next door, open 24/7, had no such signs. Idiocy is clearly not a monopoly of Indonesia.
