Just wanted to add my comment:I think if the OP go ahead being an affiliate for big online business with the website and use a server abroad and collect his payments not to a local bank, it won't be considered as a business in Indonesia, so he could just go ahead and do the whole thing. But that method will create problems, if he wants a bigger piece of the commission and deals directly with the hotels, because the hotels will be reluctant to deal with company from abroad but with no previous track record or good reputation

Many thanks all for replies / comments - my recent silence due to Telkom / Speedy issues, ie 12 days to get the phone line fixed! The general views are encouraging regarding the lack of need to set up a local company. The info about CV (2 Indonesians) is enlightening; the only 'local' would be my wife should we go ahead with a Indonesian business licence. I had been thinking CV was the 'entry level' business type. Accept what Ferdie says about any future desire to get bigger commissions if it's not an Indonesian business but as I said before, I'm not looking to make a living out this, just a bit extra / something to do. As for assets and property and all that - the only business 'asset' would be the website!

As for assets and property and all that - the only business 'asset' would be the website!
I think you're confused about the terms 'asset' & 'property' - from a business & accounting perspective the terms can often be used interchangeably. In this context business 'assets' can be regarded as 'property' - eg something (anything) that can be owned therefore 'the only business 'asset' would be the website' - which is why it is called 'intellectual property' - it is an asset, a 'property' owned by the business & therefore, since you're awfully focused on business structures etc it is something worth protecting - or you could wake-up one morning & find someone has just stolen your business idea and assets from you.Let's not go into the whole aspect of how a Company is legally a Person - a bit too intellectual for this time of day.

I think there is some good advice here:Director of Agoda.com for Indonesia, Made Gunawan, had earlier said that for the next few years, online businesses, especially in the tourism sector, would continue to thrive. Over the past five years, since the global financial crisis, Gunawan said that online businesses related to flights, hotels and travel agents had grown. Online marketing strategies had also developed, along with increased creativity among businesspeople. A wider range of the public will also get easier access to information with the increasing trend for high-tech gadgets.
Source
