It seems to be working a whole lot better now since I made this post. The log in thing is still annoying though. But there is a Youtube video which might be able to get around this, but haven't tried it yet.

spicyayam wroteI can only hope it will get better. It also means we can't cancel Speedy for a while.
I'm glad things are improving and also that you keep us up-to-date with progress.
My Speedy has really tanked lately...it keeps dropping out and I can quickly sign ON again but the worst feature is that it cannot search...I sometimes get a search to work but sometimes not. This occurs whether I use AOL search, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Yahoo, Firefox...none of these can find the URL of the website I'm looking for and I'm told it's because of the host server. I'm not sure what that means but presume it must be Speedy as that's the only common feature (I have tried 2 extra laptops....so not my computer).
Any one else have this issue or can advise...I was waiting to see if this Fibre-optic cable opposite my villa was developing but ...nothing's happened...

I guess it is a problem with the DNS settings. Try changing them to Google's DNS:

Our fiber stopped working yesterday for no reason. Already two days and nothing has happened. I feel reluctant now to cancel our Speedy service.

Thanks spicy but Speedy has been behaving normally in the last few days...it searches my urls and finds them OK so I'll leave well alone. Also, a guy in my pub who seems to be in IT showed me how to download malwarebytes and that has cleaned up my puter...this was after I downloaded Avast grimefighter for Rp120,000 and it froze my screen.
Sorry to hear about your fiber wifi ID...typical.... and this country is talking about building a nuclear power station. I don't want to be near that.

Still not working. Called the support line. The good news is they speak English, bad news they have no idea what you are talking about.

wifi.id is a relatively new wireless service in Bali from Telkom. But, it's not free, at least not yet.
If you try to connect to it, you need a password. To get the password, you have to buy some credit to use it.
I just tried to connect to it with my tablet, but it didn't work. Nothing came up. There is a Telkom depot down the end of my street and lately, there are some seats and umbrellas there and a bunch of locals online.
Rp 5,000 to connect. That's all I know, so far.

Hahaha...Maybe I'm blessed after all that I still can't get it here.
Meanwhile, the president is crowing about fibre-optic "services" to be provided to Sulawesi, Malaku and Irian Jaya.

Are you sure this is a wireless service? We've had this conversation earlier in this thread and I was told it is only a name and that the service will be provided thru' a fible-optic cable as per Spicy's situation.
I get a wifi.Id signal also....but it does nothing.
I'm familiar with airports, and even cities, where wifi is available to all...even if a password and possible charge is involved but, I question 'is this the Telkom answer or just a name that has no meaning?'
spicyayam
Some technicians came today and announced the modem was rusak. They came back later with a new one and it is working now.
Considering it is a Sunday it is pretty good service.

Yes, their whole branding is confusing. Even when we were using Speedy we had a wifi.id network that you could connect to. Though never tried it. I will try it and let you know.
We have our own network id which has been created by Telkom ID which we connect through. Later I can post some pictures of the the equipment we have. At least it is provided by Telkom at no expense to us.

That's good news Spicy....
to all members.....I'm not smart in this area but trying to find my way.
As I understand it Spicy has a new fiber-optic cable, come into his house, and a wifi router/modem which sends its wifi througout so he can pick-up on any desktop PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone...so long as in range of his router and password protected...am I right? The only modification as far as I see is the signal comes thru' a fiber-optic cable rather than a limited capacity copper line.
If so that doesn't mean it's, to me, a wifi system....we've had that since the telephone line days.
To me a wifi system is one where many transmitters are situated in areas where anyone can access, wherever in the vicinity. It may have password protected and cost attached.....but it's public.
Is Telkom working on such a facility....or am I wrong in my interpretation.
I can see wifi.ID on my list of networks available but it connects to nothing.

wifi.id is definitely a wireless system. In fact, it's Telkom Speedy Instan Wifi, supposedly with up to 100 Mbps download speed.
Earlier today, I went to one of their new wifi spots in front of the Telkom depot at the northern end of Jalan Sekuta (Sanur).
Bought an "All-Day Internet Access" card for Rp 5,000 then sat down and tried to use it on my tablet.
wifi.id popped up as an available connection so I clicked it and soon it said it was connected. And that was it.
I tried several times but couldn't get to the part where you put your username and password in (they are on the card you get when you buy one).
Went back into the depot and the guy "checked" something, then told me that there was a problem at the moment. Try again later.
I'm about to do that shortly - this time I'll take my laptop (one of the areas actually has a power outlet to plug into).
Wish me luck.

Just to clarify JohnnyCool...when purchasingj this Access card...will you be able to go to anywhere in Sanur and connect at that speed, or you need to be in-range of their router/modem?
Anyway...hope you get it working soon and please keep us info'd to anything better than what we currently have in Bali.
Just to clarify JohnnyCool...when purchasingj this Access card...will you be able to go to anywhere in Sanur and connect at that speed, or you need to be in-range of their router/modem?
No - you have to go to one of their designated hotspots, wherever they are. Unsurprisingly, their main website is less than helpful.
If you do a search for Denpasar, it will list places that have it. The card you buy has a useless map showing hotspot locations. Apart from the airport, most of them seem to be in Nusa Dua.
The one I think points to Sanur is the Bali Hyatt Hotel. But there are others - how many and exactly where, I'm not sure.
I went back to the the one near me. There were three locals with laptops and a couple with handphones/tablets. I asked one person (on a laptop) if it was working.
He said it was, so I whipped out my tablet and tried. Didn't work. Pulled out my laptop and had a bit of a struggle.
One guy helped me (he'd already been through the routine) and eventually, it was working.
I did some rough and ready speed tests and the best I got was 15 Mbps down and about 13 upload. Not too bad, really, for Rp 5,000 (Rp 150,000/month).
As far as I can tell, that's supposedly "unlimited", so you can download all you want.
Not sure how it "performs" during storms or rain. Plus, the little tent-like structures you sit in are not exactly comfortable.
Add to that time spent responding to questions from locals about "do you have business - how long you Bali - you have villa"? Etc, etc.
I tried to connect with my tablet one last time, but no go. The others couldn't get theirs connected so it wasn't just me.
If I've got enough energy left, I might go back later tonight to see if it's faster.
The "promise" is up to 100 Mbps. It's the "up to" part that might matter. The more people using it, the less we can expect.
But, it is cheap.

Thanks JohnnyCool...but is that any different to 'say' going to Starbucks and joining their wifi router....
My thinking of wifi is like in Portland, Oregan where the whole city is wifi..... as I believe Vancouver, Canada will soon be.
My boat was in a marina of maybe another 999 boats and the whole marina was wifi, there were numerous antenna...I payed monthly, integral with moorage fees, as did visiting boats. No need for anything but the password, which was frequently changed. I didn't recognize speed as it was adequate.
Do you believe that wifi ID is going to be something we can celebrate?
I was interested that Spicy has a fibre-optic cable to his house...whether that can be a wifi for others nearby, or dedicated to him, we yet have to find...surely the criteria is not the wifi but the fibre-optic ability to transfer the data.
I'm simple minded, as earlier described, but if there are restrictions in the landline pipeline to any server, can the fidelity of localised wifi bypass that restriction?

I can remember several years ago when we were all talking here on dial-up speeds - type, waiting for revolving clock to stop and then either retype as message lost or cackle happily as we'd remembered to "copy" before we clicked "enter" and now only had to "paste" it again.
Times are grand now and I'm ecstatic about my "shurty" speeds (I use that term loosely).
By the time Bali gets up to true 3G speeds the rest of the world will be enjoying 5G (100Gb/sec).

Yes, anyone can log in if they know our password or have an access card like JC bought. Wouldn't it be nice if Telkom gave you a small reduction on your bill for each person who logs on with their own access card :icon_eek:

It does seem like that, but like most things here I expect it to be patchy at best. If coverage was excellent everywhere there wouldn't be a need for other ISPs.

My wife complained to the sales guy again about having to log on every 5 minutes and he said it was because the connection was still unstable. Anyway they seem to have changed something and it is working great now.

All you people with good and fast internet connections I hope your wives get bored and run around on you. Grrrrr.

I'm no expert but don't these WiFi hotspots have security issues?
