A global travel alert issued Friday by the State Department warned al Qaeda may launch attacks in the Middle East, North Africa and beyond in coming weeks, a threat that prompted Sunday's closure of 21 embassies and consulates.
The U.S. government's actions are in response to growing intelligence that shows a potential for attacks in Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East as well as North Africa, said U.S. officials who spoke to CNN on condition of not being identified.
"The threat appears to be much worse than it has (been) in a long time," said a senior national security official in Yemen, where the government is "on high alert against possible attacks in the days to come."
Various Western targets -- not just those tied to the United States -- are under threat, according to two U.S. officials.
According to three sources, the United States has information that al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula members are in the final stages of planning for an unspecified attack.
One of the sources said that such preparations appeared to have increased in recent days with the approaching end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. In particular, Sunday is Laylet al-Qadr, or the Night of Power, which is one of the holiest moments on the Muslim calendar.
Said one U.S. official: "It all leads us to believe something could happen in the near future."

Looking at Egypt, I wouldn't be surprised if the American haters number are increasing nowadays.
The number of casualties are crazy and for every one dead person, you get the whole family wanting for revenge there

What has Egypt revolution got to do with the US? The last US influence in Egypt went when they locked up Mubarak. If this holds true to the past in 6 months the Egyptians will be wanting him back. The only discontent in Europe is because they're all broke - also nothing to do with the US.

The whole world seems to be coming down on one side or the other of the Moslem religion. Far from anything to do with democracy or freedom it's all "my invisible friend is stronger/better/smarter than your invisible friend" so intelligence has seemingly little to do with it all in my humble opinion.
If you disagree with me my invisible friend will take down your name and you will suffer forever after or until you make a contribution of a nicely aged Gouda to the cause.

Not the revolution, but at the turmoil now Markit

BBC News - Egypt army 'restoring democracy', says John Kerry
If your leader won the election and then the army kick him out, Kerry's statement already choose which side the US favors.
An irony as the champion of democracy turning its back at a military coup
Can you guess how much the US will be cursed by Morsi followers every time somebody died or imprisoned?

CanonMan wroteI tend to shy away from religious debates but in this instance this is a big concern for so many people. The UK, at ground level, is experiencing turmoil and ridiculous levels of appeasement to certain ethnic and religious minorities. Moves to ban guide dogs on public transport because dogs offend Muslims. People being told they can't be patriotic and fly British flags in their gardens etc through fear again of upsetting minority elements of the local communities and soon the forced introduction of Muslim religious studies introduced to the national education curriculum. It's bloody ridiculous.
From mates still living over there local tensions are running high. It wouldn't surprise me if we soon see civil unrest throughout the whole European region.
Happy to be away from all of that.

Yup, it is happening everywhere in Europe.
Even the scandinavian started to have tensions also
I really hope Samuel Huntington was wrong but in the end its all about different cultures trying to get along with each other and respecting one another

it'd be nice to get along with different cultures / religions but can be a tad complicated when one particular religion has its roots based on intolerance and dominance. further complicated when a large part of a particular countries political system is heavily intertwined with that religion.

CanonMan wroteI personally don't give a flying Monkey's left testicle for religion or history. What I do care about is the social stability in a World in which my Children will grow up, the here and now. So whilst people bitch and moan about the bollocks that happened in the stone age a very real threat consumes our societies. It's how we, as a species, deal with this that will define us. It doesn't need wars or hatred, it just needs tolerance, and this seems to be the biggest issue that certain sects have with the western way of life!
Cheers,
Mark.
much of whose hatred for the western way of life is based on history of intolerance from the western way of life on their particular way of life........
You can't escape history so easily by using monkeys testicles as a basis for your argument. Not even flying monkeys testicles. :topsy_turvy:

Yes, his goal is to turn Europe into "Eurabia" where everyone converts to Islam, and, change the churches, which are empty anyway, into Mosques.

The answer to all these problems is really very, very simple - education. Send these poor people in Saudi, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, etc. etc. teachers instead of Marines or Drones and the problems with reactionary and radical religion will disappear within a generation.
Of course then you wouldn't be able to get 2 trillion dollar defense budgets through the US Congress anymore but who cares about that? Except Boeing, Macdonald Douglas, Raytheon, Lockheed Marieta, the Pentagon, CIA, NSA, the Marines, Navy, Airforce (fill in your county of origin).
But what do I know?
ferdie
@joji, agree with the history learned and the whole phase that Islam religion gone through now similar with what the Christian religion.
But history also learned that the church starts to loosen up their grip and more tolerate to different views after numerous conflicts and wars which left a lot of casualties along the way and forced the church to evaluate their approach.
So the increasing warnings is definitely something to worry about, because history shows it happens before:icon_e_ugeek:

its 2013. intolerance belongs in the past. any religion / culture that speads this either via a person preaching in front of a crowd or by influencing the food a person eats and therefore the entire food supply chain of a populace belongs back there....in the past. im off for a bacon double cheese.

Whooooaaaaaa. Hold up thar partner. Take a step back.
Aren't we all sort of jumping the gun folks. Step back and get it all in perspective. From a global terrorist alert put out by the USA to Eurabia? And now we have 1.5 billion fanatical moslems beating down the doors of western civilization? If Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, so what? Does it mean that every new convert is taking up the sword of jihad? It is a well known fact that the newly converted in any field are the most fanatical. Ask people who have stopped smoking. Stopped drinking. (Stopped eating cheese!!! ) We are living in the largest moslem country in the world. Why haven't we been put to death or whipped or had our hands cut off? Cannonman, you can't just say lets forget the past, and start anew from today. IMHO islam is just going through the same phase christianity went through when the catholic church wiped out nations and cultures, all in the name of bringing the true god to the "infidels". The days of the inquisition.
This terrorist alert will pass, and so will many others, but until more tolerance is shown by all sides (remember who is terrorizing the palestinians in their own land), in the years to come we will be hearing of other "mine is the true god" spokesmen/women of god.
So sit back, crack another tinny, throw another barbie on the shrimp, and enjoy life.
Taking ourselves too seriously can be hazardous to our credulity.
