All you Ozzies that have to pay tax in Oz while eking out their meager existence abroad should look into the domicile laws from Oz - if you are a citizen of pretty much any western country and are legally domiciled for 6 months and a day outside of Oz you should not have to pay any Oz taxes.
I say this in full ignorance of the Ozzy laws but knowing how the reciprocal laws work in all of the EU and America. Generally most other western counties have similar regs.
How this affects your citizenship is another matter.
For health insurance for purposes of visa here in Indo all you will need to prove your coverage is an international travel insurance policy that costs about $80 - 100 covering both you and your spouse.
Basically then don't give a shit but just check the boxes - do you think they're actually gonna read the English policy document? I don't either.

I was talking to Centrelink office today. Age pensioners do not have to return to Australia after 6 months.
ronb
Well that Centrelink person sound like a valuable contact. Don't lose track of her/him.

I too have spoken to helpful people at Centrelink International who confirm that age pensioners do not have to return to Australia at any specified time. There seems a vague line between temporary and permanent expat status, maybe 3-5 years overseas, which is determined at Centrelink's discretion, but for the first few years it all seems quite possible. The Pension Supplement, supplied to pay local utilities like power and phone, reduces or cuts off after six weeks absence which seems reasonable enough.
I'm still trying to get to Bali but having to dispose of a lifetime's accumulation of books and stuff is taking time. I'm now aiming at getting there in June on a social budaya visa for some reconnaissance on cheapish Ubud accommodation and local agents before coming back on the retirement visa. I want to be settled by the time of the 2013 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival.

Bloody hell, why do Australians keep misunderstanding their own governments rules.
When you old buggers get the aged pension you can come here and stay for ever! You tell Centre-bloody-link that you are going to live in Indonesia for an extended period. Simple!
You will not get a darn pension supplement while in Indonesia.
There is nothing clearer than those rules!
Those are the Australian rules. The Indonesian rules say you must leave for 5 days after every 5 years.

Us sensitive souls on the forum just aren't used to that type of verbiage - please control yourself in future no.idea.

I get an Australian pension, and have had no problems whatsoever for an indefinite stay.
Recently Centrelink contacted me saying I have been re-assessed as being more of an "Australian overseas resident" rather than an "Australian resident who is travelling extensively", based on the amount of time spent in Australia and elsewhere.
I get exactly the same pension as I did before, but it is now paid monthly instead of fortnightly, and I am no longer eligible for a Health Care Card.

that could very well be worth looking into in my situation. If it's good enough for Mr Murdoch then it's good enough for me.
