The construction of a toll road connecting Benoa in Denpasar to Nusa Dua in Badung, both in Bali, may be completed by July 2013, three months before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. The 12-kilometer toll road will connect Benoa harbor, Ngurah Rai International Airport and the Nusa Dua tourism complex, and will be partly built on top of a mangrove forest.PT Jasa Marga Bali, the Bali branch office of state toll road operator PT Jasa Marga, said on Sunday the company still had land acquisition issues with locals and needed to settle them through the 2012 Land Acquisition Law to speed up the project.Jasa Marga Bali president director Akhmad Tito Karim said in Denpasar as quoted by kompas.com that he believed that residents would be cooperative this time and allow the toll road to be built. In relation to environmental concerns, Foresty Minister Zulkifli Hasan said that the project would cause "minimum environmental damage", with one hectare of mangrove forest being cleared to allow for the toll road construction. The company said it would plant 300,000 mangrove trees along the road "to compensate for the forest damage".Nusa Dua-Badung toll road to finish by July 2013 | The Jakarta Post

It's a big project, and they think 15 months will do it. Just think of the by-pass road (Sunrise Road) connecting Sanur and Kusamba in the Klungkung Regency. I't been happening for years and never seems to be finished.
Andrew
Thats why they said "may be completed" and not "will be" :-)

I am pretty sure it will be done on time, reason: if not it'd be extremely embarrassing for Indonesia due to APEC meetingBUT I worry about the building quality, maybe it would be more important for them that it will look all clean & nice on the grand opening day but than one year later it'll be all cracks & holes :icon_sad:

If Sunrise Road is anything to go by it will be a 6 year project.

If Sunrise Road is anything to go by it will be a 6 year project.
Where is sunrise road? Is that what you call the new Ida Bagus Mantra bypass?
sakumabali
or do you mean the sunset road extension?
ronb
Sunrise is one name that has been used for the Sanur and Kusamba road - i.e. the Ida Bagus Mantra by-pass
kiwi
I also refer to it (Ida Bagus Mantra by - pass) as Sunrise, when it was first started it was going to do great things for the traffic heading up the coast. 2 year build if I am correct was the goal, it's still a long way from completion and already they are having to do repair work in places. I was too busy staying alive in the traffic to count but there are still a few major bridges to be constructed so to build a new by - pass over mangrove swamp in the timeframe they are talking about I can not see it happening

"Sunrise Road" - the one going east (towards Candi Dasa, Amlapura, etc, where the Sun rises)"Sunset Road" - the one going west (towards Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, etc, where the Sun sets)Neither are in very good condition. Sunset Road is a right pain-in-the-arse these days, especially since work has begun on the Simpang Siur "underpass".The Sunrise Road started out OK, but it's falling apart in various sections and already being "repaired" (as kiwi noted above). Too many trucks and cheap ingredients, I think.I, too, will be surprised if the Benoa-Nusa Dua tollroad "happens on time". Less than impressed by claims of "minimum environmental damage"."The company said it would plant 300,000 mangrove trees along the road "to compensate for the forest damage".
I don't think it's that easy to fix things like this.I am pretty sure it will be done on time, reason: if not it'd be extremely embarrassing for Indonesia due to APEC meetingBUT I worry about the building quality, maybe it would be more important for them that it will look all clean & nice on the grand opening day but than one year later it'll be all cracks & holes
Yes indeed, sakumabali. However, there are many issues that Indonesia can be embarrassed about already, without invoking an APEC meeting in Bali.:eagerness:

there are many issues that Indonesia can be embarrassed about already, without invoking an APEC meeting in Bali
There are quite a couple of things going on which could kill the tourism in Bali in the next years: The Icon Bali starting to disappears, BAD infrastructure, Pollution, bad management everywhere, overpopulation, weird legal system for nonindonesians (just the illegal nominee structure could hit Bali like a bomb), Islamization vs. growing desire of a Balinese Independance, raising prices, sell-out)there are indeed many :indecisiveness:, I mentioned some above, one I have to ad: Aids. More and more young people die of Aids in Bali (and Indonesia). These are (mostly) not listed in the Aids statistics! I don't want to go too much in the details here (as the family of my wife won't be happy) but a young member died some days ago, jiggy jig, maybe family got Aids too, the whole package (and his official mortality cause is sth else of course!!!)Than I forgot as well the people who die in the streets every day (google Carnage Bali streets), I'm not so sure anymore about the statistics (and too lazy to search now) but there are in average around 30 people (I believe 35) who die on the streets DAILY. As I know 100 % that many deadly accidents in the rural area in the north, east & west won't be included, the real numbers will be higher.

I think they are not doing that bad on Simpang Siur and I certainly don't think that traffic jams have increased (yet) due to the underpass project. If the Benoa - Nusa Dua tollroad project will be managed by the same company doing the works on the underpass now it shouldn't be that bad. Somehow, it being two very different types of projects, I think a different company will be doing the tollroad. The 'Sunrise' road is also not that bad (ok, it is taking a long time). Where is it falling apart?

The Problem is in my opinion - and yes - I admit I'm part of this problem is that (not mention any quality building failures here) EVERYBODY cross ANY junction AFTER it's already read for 5-8 seconds - so DEADLOCK. they did it from the left & the right, HEY LET'S DO IT TOO....they're so fecking SLOW crossing the junction I want to cross it NOW even it already turned red....THIS IS NOT GONNA WORK...police make it even worse. SO ONLY SOLUTION (as mentioned before here in the forum many times): FINES, MASSIVE FINES!!! 500.000 Rupiah crossing red line. will cause massive traffic if enforce in the first weeks I've to admit but after that....HELLOOO Singapore .... namaste

I think they are not doing that bad on Simpang Siur and I certainly don't think that traffic jams have increased (yet) due to the underpass project.
Maybe we go through there at different times. In the last few weeks I've seen traffic backed-up from around Carrefour to the roundabout, so much so that to avoid it, I drive into Carrefour's parking lot, drive through it to the back entrance/exit, turn right and take the small back-road which by-passes the mess out front. Paying Rp 2000 to Carrefour is a lot less than what I'd waste on petrol stopping-starting just to get to the roundabout. There are quite a few parts of the Sunrise road between where it starts (Padang Galak) and the first main turnoff towards Sukawati that are crummy (somewhat "broken"). Further along, between there and the next turnoff to Sukawati (the next set of traffic lights and the small backroad), is also a bit crummy. However, that intersection has been "repaired" lately. Not sure how long the "repairs" will hold up. I haven't been all the way to Kusamba for quite a while, so not sure of the conditions on that stretch.OK - maybe "falling apart" was too strong a term. Let me just say that IMHO, significant sections were poorly constructed in the first place and that's why various parts seem to be being continually "repaired".:icon_lol:

Let's hope the underpass will solve these jams. I, unfortunately, have to pass Simpang Siur several times a day. I think I know it so well that I know which lane goes faster at what time of the day :icon_mrgreen:

Re Carrefour exit back: If I understand that correctly you use that little road towards the Ngurah Rai Bypass (along the river Badung), than arrive on the bypass, make a U-Turn (which is very difficult cause on this side towards Simpang Siur is heavy traffic too), than go back to Simpang Siur...this is faster than going straight on the Sunset Road on the most left lane f.e.?!?
balibule
You come from Seminyak and go direction Simpang Siur. You turn into Carrefour and exit through the back (Glogor Carik) where you turn right and drive all the way to the end. At the T-section, you either turn right and you end up on Simpang Siur or you turn left and you go direction Pemogan. There are a few turns right that will bring you back on the Bypass direction Sanur.
sakumabali
yes I know that road...I definetly would say it's a great shortcut towards teuku umar / imam bonjol, but the other way? On the bypass to Sanur you've to make a U-Turn, that could take 5 minutes alone
balibule
I think we are talking different directions here. If you want to go from Seminyak to Sanur then the short cut works. If you want to go from Seminyak to airport then it obviously doesn't work.
balibule
Sukamabali, it think we both know that street very well and we're probably just stuck with words or description :)
