Moving to Bali and we will be looking to buy a car, maybe a couple of years old.
Where is the best place to buy one?
Is it worth buying a decent secondhand one, is there a big difference in price to a new one?
Are prices negotiable for both new and used from dealers?
Do they generally come with a warranty if you are buying from a dealer and is it actually worth anything?
We were also told that there is no car insurance here, really??
Any tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated!:icon_mrgreen:

I bought my car very slightly used, only 6,000km, in Denpasar. As in Australia there is the “rolling off the showroom floor” syndrome and that huge sticker price was knocked down. My car is a Honda Jazz and it has been faultless for a year. The price of my car was about as negotiable as it would have been in Australia but we had a Balinese friend helping us and it made a big difference. In fact it made all the difference because the owner and people in the dealership didn’t speak enough English for us to communicate.
My car came with the Honda warranty but I don’t know how much that would be worth in Bali.
Yes, there is car insurance and I have it for my car. We don’t have house insurance but we do for the car. I have used it a couple of times for little dents and bruises and also when a side window was broken. The insurance company have been very easy and accommodating to deal with.

Thanks for your input Pollyana! Did you buy your insurance through a broker or on line? Can you buy on line insurance here? Are there good and bad companies? Is insurance here relatively inexpensive? :icon_mrgreen:

If you are thinking of buying a car 2 or 3 years old, buy NEW. Indonesia dose not have a written off registry so all cars are repaired.
I still have 4 cars in Australia that I would like to bring here, S/H cars are over priced, a used taxi is 75jt but in Australia they are worth the price of scrap steel.
I'm still trying to bargain a car at the police station before it go's to auction next month, we are stuck at 7jt. Still over priced:icon_mrgreen:
Also remember Indonesian do not maintain there cars, you would be lucky if they have a log book.

I find it easy to deal directly with the insurance company. A representative will come to your house. Being Indonesia he will NOT turn up on time but he will eventually get there.
My vehicle is insured through Autocillin for the value of just under 200,000,000. This costs a yearly amount of 4,200,000. This covers accidents and flood damage to the vehicle. There is also a third party cover amount of 10,000,000 per accident. It seems I must run people over very carefully.
House insurance is with Alliance and is only 2,400,000 per year. This covers fire, lightning, explosion, falling aircraft (?), riot, flood, tempest, landslide, civil commotion and burglary. Any one event is currently insured up to 1,300,000,000. (I may increase this with the policy renewal.)
I have never had to make a claim so can not comment on that side of the insurance policies.

no prob no.idea, was just checking as it seems your policy was given at a different % rate than mine, and i thought allianz had set rates, didnt realise they may just change the policy figures (for the same kind of policy) from person to person.
thems the brakes. i have another 3 places which need insuring in the near future. Allianz wont be gettting them unless they come up with a good explanation as to why they they are charging different people different prices for the same policies.
bbq sounds good, ill bring my allianz insurance policy to use as kindling....
sorry crosskeyscottage, didnt mean to turn your car insurance thread into a house insurance thread.

Are you sure you didnt get the prices of the car and home insurance mixed up?
thanks
I am positive that I did not get anything mixed up! I actually had the 2 insurance policies beside me when I submitted my comments. You are welcome to come around and check them.
I realise that I look through different glasses to most people, however I really do know what is happening around me.
After getting that out of the way you are very welcome to come over for a barbecue at some stage.:icon_biggrin:

Hi. I also got allianz home insurance. It seems I got ripped. Our place is insured for 1.5M (plus 300jt for contents), and it cost us 8jt. But we also have the earthquake/tsunami/volcano cover on top of the things you mention.
Are you sure you didnt get the prices of the car and home insurance mixed up?
could you tell me what % of your house price your policy was charged at?
surely its a set rate for all.........(i have 2 policies, the one you mention is the first, then the earthquake etc is the second). our % charge rate should be the same for the first.
thanks

also to note is that low milage/ km on used cars doesnt account for much here regarding discounts . Actually the odometer doesnt really represent any true " work load " of what a car has done ( in the city anyway ) , as engine hours would be a better guage for this. It should be law here that engine hour guages be installed on cars here .
Someone driving a car daily from denpasar to Kuta for example would have very low km on the clock ..., but have huge engine hours in the macet( traffic jams) ..., and Jakarta you can times the engine hour again times ten .
Once used cars are also out of their warranty periods , often cheap servicing is done to save money , ie; cheap oil, and non genuine parts used , and any funny noises ( problems) are blissfully ignored untill too its late which creates other additionl problems to adjoining parts etc
..., in fact they even have the " MAGIC Benkel " , for when you cant afford to have the car repaired. The magic mechanic will perform magic on the car - lol .
Whatever this MAGIC comprises of is a mystery and you never get to see it either ..., perhaps magic is old salvaged 90% worn out used parts , or perhaps banana peels shoved into a worn and noisy differential in order to make the noise go away ?
If I was to buy a used car , Id make sure it was still under warranty , or as close to as possible ..., unless that is , the car was of a luxury type from a well off meticulous and proud owner who was upgrading to a later similar model , who would most likely have service records from dealerships etc.
Then theres the new vs used debate ..., with 2nd hand prices so high here , often it doesnt make sense to buy 2nd hand .
Also adding confusion is - cars get really trashed here , with the bad roads , multiple scratches in traffic , cars constanly out in the weather , or carports instead of proper lock up enclosed garages , etc ................, a suitable vehicle is an army tank .
I cant see the missus agreeing with this , but a cheap ( new ) ute like a diahatsu grand max etc , ie; - a cab on shazz with a steel rear tray ( aluminium even better ) would suit me ..., as youve only got the cab to worry about , and the motorbikes squeezing past can scratch up that tray ( or run into the back of it ) as much as they like without me losing any tears over it - lol - I could even throw an old lounge and a bbq in the back :highly_amused:.

new or second hand, but where are the good dealers or proud owners upgrading?
OK so if we are going to go down the track of new or nearly new car, any recommendations from anyone, or any proud owners out there that want to have the latest model instead of their nearly new model?
ronb
I agree the Terios is a good car (and so is the Rush since it is basically the same). Also the Avanzas and Xenias are worth a look - they also are the same. If you are after an automatic, that is one of the reasons for buying rather than renting, since most rental cars are manual.

If you want to save lots of money - Id recommend you buy a 2nd hand diahatsu terrios over a toyata rush ...,
or a 2nd hand diahatsu xenia over a toyota avanza ...,
because they are the same car with different badges , but the 2nd hand toyota will be much more expensive than the diahatsu , with the same year/millage/condition etc .
Also indonesian assembled cars will be cheaper than exported models , with spare parts also much cheaper .
Plus , if considering not so common models , think about how long it will take to get those rare and expensive spare parts.
If - the proposal for cars forced to use pertamax fuel ( double the price of subsidised premium ) goes ahead , then a diesel engine maybe an attractive option.

One of the web-sites with a guide to new car prices is
http://www.autocarprices.com/
Since Terios has been mentioned, the prices given are
New Terios TS A/T 171.8
New Terios TS A/T Extra 174.8
New Terios TS M/T 158.0
New Terios TS M/T Extra 169.7
New Terios TX A/T 198.0
New Terios TX A/T Adventure 209.9
New Terios TX M/T Adventure 197.3
New Terios TX M/T DLX 187.0
So these are a guide to list prices which may actually vary a bit from one part of Indonesia to another. You can then go to a couple of dealerships, meet with different sales-people and bargain. Here you are basically trying to get them to share their commission with you.

Bali Lestari Motor..
Jl.Tkd Barito 17x
has newish cars for sale...honda jazz/ suzuki swift/ toyota yaris still under warranty.
also the above mentioned cars like the terios/rush or avanza/xenia
but also has the more expensice range for sale like for example the fortuner or mitsu pajero
prices are nego, and if needed can be financed including insurance.
Personally I found the terios/rush and avanza/xenia a bit wobbly in curves, but that could also be my drivingstyle ofcourse :icon_biggrin:

there is also online ebay/trading post type websites like - tokobagus , and kaskus , you can also keep an eye out in the bali advertiser , and the local balinese newspapers , although sellers in the local balinese newspapers tend to not advertise the prices which is annoying and forces you to call .
RonBs good advice on
http://www.autocarprices.com/ should also be noted that they also have the average market prices for 2nd hand cars also ...,
- so does
otomotive magazine , which is a regular newspaperstyle mag with the latest offerings and accessories and tips re; cars and motorcycles . Another mag with good info is
Autobild.
With the
xenia/avanza - avoid the 1.0 litre and instead choose the 1.3 ..., better still is a new avanza veloz ( out soon ) that has a 1.5 liter motor and improved suspention.
@ gilbert - re ; wobbly ........., after renting various models for days on end ( and carrying 4 adults with lugguage ) , I found
avanza and rush " not too bad " (ie; for the price ) when comparing then to a similar priced
suzuki APV , which to me felt narrow and top heavy in comparison IMHO .
I found the
1.3 ltr avanza way better through the mountainous twisties of inland north bali ( a good testing ground) than an APV , and with better power application than a
1.5 ltr Suzuki APV. then again ....., the APV is a van style MPV and this is to be expected .
I gave these various rental cars a good workout , and did the tourist run around the island with visiting friends etc , starting from the bukit via bedugal to lovina , then on to kitamani , then onwards to candidasar , then on to ubud, and back to the bukit ...., with various other criss crossing of ridges and valleys to other locations of interest along the way .
When commenting on the pros and cons of these or any cars ..............., they must also be compared to others within the
same class and
price range ...., and
engine size .:icon_wink:
gilbert de jong
yeah I can imagine with four adults and luggage it won't be wobbly and an ok drive.
there's also an avanza with a 1.8 engine, rarely though.
""When commenting on the pros and cons of these or any cars ..............., they must also be compared to others within the same class and price range ...., and engine size""
very true :)

You need to look at want you want out of your car
If just around Bali & long term buy new, the Suzuki APV is nice & thin for the small street of Bali.
Daihatsu grand max is a little wider & gives a Little more room for the driver.
The next step up is the Toyota avanza & daihatsu Xenia, still small cars & ok for 4 people (12 Indonesian:icon_mrgreen:) Toyota will always hold better value & black is No1 color
All these car are local made & have no safely equipment, no sound proofing & you can even buy them without AC or power steering.
All cars made in Indonesia have under 3.0 ltr engine & will run on lawn mower fuel.
The Honda Freed is not a bad car if you like Honda's, they have side sliding doors & would have a good resale value (220jt?)
The Toyota Innova Diesel & Panther Diesel are the next step up (270jt?) I like the Panther as it is made of steal, its a good solid car & runs good on Bio Diesel.
The bigger cars Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet & Mitsubishi (350jt+) are imported cars with all the safely equipment, these cars have more comfort, will drive on the pot holes better.
My last trip to Bali, I had a Chevrolet/Holden Captive & was great to drive, it was a bit big for some of the streets in Kuta but the rest was fine.
If buying a used car make sure you have a good mechanic look at it first.
All Employed drivers will take the car to a repairer that will give him a kick back, so it not how good the service is, its the kick back value.
In Australia replacement part are OEM or better, in Indonesia it can be anything that looks ok.
As I said there is no Insurance write-offs, Insurance company sells cars with more than 50% damage to a repair(lol) & then puts it back into his used car show room.
A friend asked me to look at his car, he had new tires & spooring, they said he needs the car body centered It would cost about 600,000rp. I had a look & found the RH chassis rail was bent just near the engine mount. I went with him to the recommend body centerer, he had a small tool box, welder & a jack. So off we went off to another shop & he had the same thing I ask how he was going to repair it. He was going to cut & weld a few steering parts to make it look good & would only charge 350,000rp. I showed him what the problem was & no matter how much cutting & welding it was not going to make the wheels straight & he agreed. He sent us to his friend & this was were we found the chop shop, in the back street was a building with lots of cars(2008-2012). He told me that he could center the car for 3jt & was happy to show me how. Lets just say that there was no chassis straightener, but three men with good eyes & lots of string. And he has two show rooms.
If you are staying in Bali for a long time buy a new car.
I'm not a car dealer, I do not sell cars, but I do like chevys.
Thats just my 2cent worth,
