I have read a lot of posts and people keep commenting not in Ubud you won't be able to find it that cheap.I will have a house so accomidation will not be an issue. Can I get some basic ideas of costs past accomidation?1. Cost to buy a new car?2. Cost to buy a new motorcycle?3. Cost to buy a horse?4. Cost of 2 person household groceries for a month.5. Petrol cost?

Petrol cost?
Whitecow, we've found that it costs more than we expected to live in Bali simply because there are many things we forgot to take into account. For instance, a trip to the doctor might cost 450,000 rupiah whereas in Oz our friendly omnigovernment picks up most of the tab. If you have health insurance that will pick up part of the cost and I consider health insurance in this country a necessity. For two people you could expect to pay 40.000.000 annually.A car, well, you can count on say, 300.000.000. For a motorbike say 15.000.000 rupiah.I have never seen a horse here and wouldn't have a clue but food and land may be the issue there. I can't tell you the cost of our groceries and petrol because I haven't done an accounting but there will be someone here who can help. You may already be aware that internet usage is relatively expensive. I don't know where you're from but I can say that our slow internet connection costs as much as our fast connection did in Australia. We do live in the Ubud area but I cannot tell you how the costs here compare with elsewhere in Bali because this is the only place we've lived. I would have thought the main difference in Ubud expenses compared with other places would be accommodation which you won't have to worry about. It sounds like you're doing your homework and that will be a big help. Good luck!

pollyanna ty so much for your info.On the internet connection do you have it at your actual home or are you just going to a cafe. I hear that it is 500kbs in some places in Ubud. What are some other things that you did not take into account that have hurt your pocket book? Not including rent what do you think you are spending a month? If you can list out any of it that would be great. Also would you do the move again if you were back at that point of deciding?

I can't tell you how slow because my knowledge of anything on the other side of the computer screen is a mystery to me.If we could move back to the starting point of this move, knowing what we know now, we would still make the move. We are very happy here and the only drawback for us is having left family and friends.Pet costs are high. We have two dogs and a cat and anything pet related is expensive. That is probably because people here either almost ignore their pets or they absolutely dote on them.Because Bali is such a cash society I really just have no idea how much we're spending per month but there have been many posts about living costs in Bali on this forum. Trying searching for something like cost of living.

You think any isp in Bali can match this glassfiber speed? http://www.speedtest.net/result/883909515.png[/IMG]Would be nice though but I think it will take quite while before that's possible.

All you geeks are going to think, "no wonder she calls herself Pollyanna". I don't know who my provider is. We've moved into a homestay while we build our home. There was an internet connection here but hardly used and apparently quite limited. We do not yet speak Bahasa Indonesia. The owner of the homestay spoke to the provider asking for unlimited service. We agreed to pay the internet bill. No idea what we've agreed to or who we've agreed with. As soon as we receive an invoice I'll let you know.I've done the speed test 3 times and the speed is consistent. Just now it was .31mb/s download and .08mb/s upload.

Whitecow,Why buy a new car? I bought a clean 'suzuki katana' here for 41 million. No rust, good engine, tyres, banging stereo. Petrol is very cheap and spares and servicing seems impossibly cheap. Thats why you never see scrap cars. It's so cheap to mend them. Second hand cars keep their value. Same with motorcycles. You can feed yourselves as little as you like depending on your tastes. But for cooking at home 1 million rupia a month should cover a good selection of groceries for 2 and 2 million you could eat out most nights.Alcohol can be expensive if you wish to indulge.Horses are used in the north even in the city of Singaraja, I can get you a price [I will ask my wife to get a rough estimate] if you wish, but it will depend on if you want the 'normal' bali pony which is sutible for pulling a cart or the larger [rarer ones] for riding. All in all pretty cheap to live here once you have accomadation sorted. Water and electric costs very little and rates or yearly tax on the house miniscule compared to the west.

It costs me about 15 million a month but I have found the cost of living goes up between 10 and 15% per year. I have a family of 6. That includes electricity, water , gas etc but not rent or transportation. Included is one Pembantu.

Whitecow, you asked about my internet cost and I couldn't tell you but now we've received the bill and it was 453.000Rp.

Also do people get insurance on there homes?
Expats mostly do get house insurance, local people mostly don't. I guess once you get the habit you stick with it.Last year, a fairly new villa burnt, and it didn't have insurance - I think because of slowness getting the IMB which the insurer wants. Very sad.Cost of insurance is comparable to with we paid in Sydney even though re-build costs are lower. Risks are higher - there is earthquake risk, storm risk, and fires are not likely to get put out by a fire brigade.
