I haven't bought a dvd in Bali for quite a while ever since I got myself a rapidshare premium account, which works out to be cheaper than buying the DVD's at the store...but that is of course because I have a dedicated internet connection. When I used to buy from the shops I always bought from Softcomp centers of which there are many around any tourist area and all of the staff are knowledgeable and honest about the quality of a particular title.

I also buy my DVD's at Sakura in Denpasar. Always good quality. Staff there will always tell you if the copy is bad.

Btw, I am not very happy with the copies I buy at the entrance of the Bintang supermarkt (Jl Seminyak) Where to find better copies/shops?
There was a string before about dvd shops. The link is here bali-expat-forum-f2/what-your-favourite-dvd-shop-t21555.htmlIf you're close to Bintang I would advise to go to the Sakura shop close by. I think it's around 200 m further towards Kuta on the right hand side. Usualy the quality of the newest movies isn't good. You can ask them at the shop if the quality is good and they will tell you which dvds aren't good yet.
I haven't bought a dvd in Bali for quite a while ever since I got myself a rapidshare premium account, which works out to be cheaper than buying the DVD's at the store...but that is of course because I have a dedicated internet connection. Regarding Balibo. I watched it the other night with my wife (Indonesian). For me, it was OK but had a big impact on my wife. She was two years old at the time of the portrayed events (1975) and to this day, hadn't realized that her "countrymen" did stuff like that. It was a big shock for her and moved her greatly. Before watching it, her favourite "war movie" has been The Killing Fields.Whilst I think Balibo is important, it's rather sketchy (IMHO). Too much is not covered at all, despite what's promised on the cover. (Maybe the copy I bought has lots of missing "extra" sections.)I wonder when someone will make the movie of what happened during the next 24 years, culminating in the extraordinary blood baths of 1999? By then, the world wide web was up and running. I remember seeing footage from East Timor at the time that I've never been able to forget.I remind myself that atrocities occur every day of the week, somewhere. Many large and small governments are still involved in perpetrating savagery of one kind or another. USA, UK, China, Myanmar, North Korea, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, spring to mind.Human nature?

I probably got carried away a bit above (about Balibo).MiSO recommends:I'm not thereA movie about Bob Dylan. A bit confusing in the beginning because of the fragmentary storyline, but in the end it all comes together. Great visuals/ shots.
I loved it - however, it helps if you're a fan of Bob Dylan (like me), otherwise you're likely to be completely lost.More for Dylan fans: The Travelling Wilburys "documentary". Brilliant, if you can find it.A few others I've seen and enjoyed:Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden? (*****)Salaam Bombay (*****) Hard to find.Borat (I and II) (****)True North (****) Hard Candy (****)Coco Chanel (****)Earth (documentary) (*****) 8)

Hi JC, I don't know about this "human nature" thing, personally I prefer to refer to it as "the nature of some humans" (that way I don't feel that I am being tarred with the same brush)

Hi widder...Me either.Sometimes I want to get a passport for another planet.Scientists have been finding lots of them. None, so far, any of us could live on comfortably (if at all).No visa/passport agents for that, yet. (Not even on Bali.)Probably just a matter of time... :D

But in the end of the day it was too preaching to me. The producer's focus was to show our planet from the positive side (beauty), not from the fear-perspective like the American politician did (forgot his name). But instead he chose the sadness and regret-angle ("otherwise we'll lose all of this, so people...") He chose the same concept: Emotional blackmail.Cold Mountains ***** with Jude Law, Nicole Kidneyman, Renee Zellweger (only for her role watch this movie! Haha..)21 Grams****Great movie, not sure where the title refers to, probably drugs. If so, then the title is misplaced (as drugs was not a major subject)Reminded me of Magnolia, but was not as good.

21 Grams****Great movie, not sure where the title refers to
not sure if it's the same movie..but, I remember a movie where the difference in weight between a life person on a scale and the same person just deceased is 21 grams.so that would mean that the last breath has a weight of 21 grams...including the departing soul ofcourse :) .

Great movie, not sure where the title refers to, probably drugs. If so, then the title is misplaced (as drugs was not a major subject)
"21 grams" is a reference to the supposed weight of a human soul.A rather odd doctor, way back in the early 1900s, performed some experiments on people about to die. He weighed them before they died and at the time of death. He noticed a sudden loss of weight (roughly 21 grams) at the moment of death. He also weighed dogs and found the same thing didn't happen, which proved to him that dogs don't have souls. This notion fitted perfectly with his religious ideas. Whilst he tried to account for natural death processes that could result in sudden weight loss, his methodology was extremely flawed. Controversy raged for months on (I think), The New York Times. The whole story is quite amazing. I can't remember the original doctor's name. If you do a Google search for "21 grams", I'm sure you'll find some more details.I'm just glad he isn't my doctor (or my dog's vet).

The Lonely Bones - **** from me. I have been waiting for it and may be a bit biased in my rating... however I wasn't the only one that cried several times while watching it!
