Spicy it would appear Bambang's profile no longer exists on this forum? Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Was it forcedly removed or did he request it?

As I already said somewhere else, I think the archives are one of the great assets of this forum. I am very sad to see that bambang's posts appear to have disappeared. If this happened every time someone left in a huff - half the archives would go.

haven't checked if his profile is still here or not (who cares really?)...but if it's not, I think his posts still stay part of the archives. however I dont think his posts really contribute to the value of the archives...but that's just my personal (empirious) opinion 8)

Only his profile appears to have been removed his posts remain. Thought I'd save JC talking to himself with further responses to someone who no longer exists

I deactivated his account. I don't know what the difference between banning or deactivating an account. Something I need to look into. His posts remain and it is even one of Bert's rules is that even if you get banned, your posts will remain on the forum. Which I think is a good policy, as I sometimes like going back through some of the old threads here. Even if they got out of hand sometimes they were good for a laugh. On taking over the forum, I didn't want to have to ban anyone or remove any posts. Well, it seems someone thought they would take advantage of this and test my patience. I am fairly sure the one person had multiple accounts here. I hope that person will eventually move on with their life as some of the other people who had problems with the forum eventually did.I realized yesterday at what a great job Bert has done at maintaining this forum. I was feeling quite stressed out the couple of days, because of certain person's posts. As Jimbo said on a post, whatever happens on the forum, you are never going to please anyone. I hate the personal attacks here and the personal agenda that at least one person had here. I want to make the forum 'family friendly', even if it does become boring for some people. I enjoy 'lively' discussions, but when they start to become personal, I think they then need to be cut off. The forum is for people living in Bali, hoping to live in Bali or for people who stay here longer than the average tourist. Sure everyone can discuss whatever is on their mind, even if it is not Bali related, but I don't want to have this forum as a place to come for trivial internet arguments.

I deactivated his account. I don't know what the difference between banning or deactivating an account.
I think from my forum, that when you deactivate the user can re register. When I ban I have the option of banning just the user name or their IP address. But of course they can always re register using a proxy server if they are determined.
spicyayam
Ok, thanks. There are options to ban by username or IP address. Few people have their own IP address so trying to ban by IP could have problems, if other people try to register from the same ISP for example.Like you say though, there are plenty of ways around re-registering if the person is determined enough. Going forward, I might do something like forcing all new member's posts to be moderated for their first x number of posts.

Hey Spicyajam, take a deep breath, inhale, exhale..stress kills the innocent... The policy is ok, family friendliness, not flaming at each other..A small fire is ok though, as long as it is on topic and without harsh personal attacks. But when frustrated, why not throw peeled Durian at each other...? :)

Thanks for the reply Spicy. In defence of Bambang his buttons were getting pushed a little but clearly he was unnecessarily aggresive and had a chip on his shoulder. Maybe his intent was simply to cause trouble for the forum AND If he's been using multiple profiles and as one member suggested actually replying to his own posts well that's just a bit sad really  Wouldn't let it stress you. Onward and upward

Been offline for a couple of weeks and have only just noticed the bambang saga.I've been suss on the guy/s for quite a while. Multiple personalities. Bad manners. Arrogance beyond comprehension. Remind you of somebody or what???????  :?: Am I alone in my thinking or pretty close to the target??????Adz

Just came in on the tale end of this so won't give it the full 2 cents worth, 1 penny is enough. Having been banned here a number of times and having read some of bangs posts I gotta say his buttons were getting pushed and some of what he said was not far off the mark. Some of it was though - personal attacks should be punished and you know what? The best punishment IMHO would have been to simply ignore him...That's right, simply ignore him! How many of you have posted something that you found burningly important on this or any other forum and had it sink without reply. It hurts, sob, sob :( Well, not that bad but we all tailor our posts to achieve the maximum effect and say the most on any subject we feel is important. And then to have them loudly ignored is bitter.I don't know if any of you have seen a TV show that made the rounds first in the UK and then to wide acclaim in the US called "The Nanny"? Now in this show the most effective weapon (tool, some might call it) in the Nanny's quiver was the dreaded "Naughty Step" where monstrous small people were banned until they had settled down. And it worked. So my idea is (should probably be in the thread of "improvements to the forum" ) create a "Naughty Step" where the offending person is banned, with Avatar prominently shown, on the home page... and not able to post for the period of the sentence. Just an idea - I'm probably getting mellow in my old age or just too tired to get worked up about 2 people threatening each other from thousands of kilometres apart ...

It works with Martin and on a forum would put a bit of humour on things when they are getting too heavy.

Interesting suggestion Markit, but I don't think democracy can work on a forum. I tried to be nice to one person by giving them a warning and they went on the attack. I read Bert's rules for the forum for the first time today and I think that particular person broke almost every rule. I have been a moderator and administrator of several forums before and never had the same experience as this one :?: I can deal with sarcasm, jokes and sometimes non-PC stuff, but having to deal with this particular person gave me a bit of stress. I am thinking of giving some long-term members and people who I can trust, moderator privileges. Well, if anyone is up for it let me know.

I am thinking of giving some long-term members and people who I can trust, moderator privileges. Well, if anyone is up for it let me know.
Bert did that before too and it didn't work out so well from what I recall. It seems some members took even less kindly to being moderated by anyone other than Bert. And I think also because there were different levels of moderation by different people. What one person takes as humour another may be offended by.Personally, I think the forum belongs to you, you make the rules and we are your guests here so we have to abide by them.

The democratic idea was only in terms of the sentence, i.e. length there of, passed. In other words how long should the ban to the Naughty Step last - since the perpetrator had per se "injured" other forum members, they would be instrumental in the punishment. As an added bonus it would make you Spicy not completely the bad guy.Just an idea... Oh and thanks Mini, you've been awfully nice to me lately am I mellowing or are you?
spicyayam
Thanks for the suggestion. It could be an interesting idea. One problem is though, that some people might feel they are being victimized, if they don't have a sense of humor. People kind of voted the last member off by sending me PMs and reported post messages. Honestly, I don't want to have to ban anyone or delete any posts.

\quote:The forum is for people living in Bali, hoping to live in Bali or for people who stay here longer than the average tourist........\ I would hope it's for more than just a select group(s), there are plenty of members who don't live in Bali, nor do they want to, just love staying there. :(

People kind of voted the last member off by sending me PMs and reported post messages.
That should tell you someone's gone way out of line. If you're the only moderator, it's up to you to make decisions.Whilst I don't advocate "banning" anybody, per se, there are times when somebody has to be roped in and perhaps made accountable for their actions. Given a few chances to toe the line. Only after that would I consider really banning or attempting to block somebody's IP address. The latter, as you know, is not all that easy. Well, it's not that hard, but many factors are involved, including blocking ISP addresses which would affect many others. Most ISP's broadband connections are dynamic rather than static. Every time you log-in, you get a different "address". Setting up a static address is more difficult, and usually costs more."Personal threats" have no place in any forum and should not be tolerated, IMHO. :D

People kind of voted the last member off by sending me PMs and reported post messages
.Careful. In my book, that's not a convincing argument. It's kind of a mob law. If this type of governance was valid, civil rights in the USA would still be a dream.Of course, the alternative is the decision of one person only: the moderator. Well, in that case, because of other considerations which do not concern us or are unknown to any of us, just peons, I would prefer that the decision would come from the "dictator" having taken into consideration the WHOLE picture. But that's only my opinion, and an opinion is like... :)
