Hey Ronb, was at the indo consulate again today, very good service again. Also any indo nationals needing to deal with with Oz immigration in perth, went there as well. I was amazed how fast and efficient the service was. They had about 50 desks all manned by staff dealing with enquires.

Airasia have a big sale on, might be good for visa runs. I dont know what you pay now, but a quick search result was less than a million rupiah, return to Singapore, KL about the same. Need to book between now and 16th August to fly January to June next year :)

I use Air Asia a lot for travel between Bali and Oz and Bali -Singapore/Kl. I returned last night from Singapore with them for a visa run . In what be a world first they changed my flights free of charge!!!. My original flight was changed to a later time by Air Asia, while I was in Singapore I phoned them on the day I was due to fly back to Bali and explained that the new time was too late(it was due to arrive in Bali @12.15am) I said that my 7 y.o. son was with me and could I fly on the earlier flight , yes he said and it would be free of charge. For a budget airline I find their planes really new and surprisingly the food delicious. We flew Bali singapore return for Rp 1.000.000 (Us $105).Is it really worth paying another $400 for a full service airline . I don't think so .

Seems Spicyayam is a bit slow off the mark, despite it having been reported.

Seem to Spicyayam has a long way to go from taking over all the forum admin work, practice makes perfect

Email notifications aren't working at the moment, which is why I didn't get a notification. I am still waiting on Bert to get control of the domain to fix the problem.
I am considering changing the forum software to vbulletin which is better at controlling spam and offers a lot more useful features.

duly noted and thanks for the effort, spicy.
is there a way we (forum members) can all ease the pain, e.g. microdonations or something?

No, that's fine. Markit suggested a while back, if they found the forum useful they could make a donation to a local charity. It is an idea I would like to explore further once the forum is transferred over to me.

Totally off topic and I am sorry...but why do people make donations to charity's?
Why not help the 'needy' directly?
Some charity's are not charity's at all, but just stonecold businesses...

Nice bike Gilbert :D

Just to answer your question from a different perspective...I worked in fundraising for a small orphanage in Nepal and many of my donors simply did not want to face the tragic story of some of our kids, so people would rathur just donate to a charity than actually become emotionally attached~fair enough i say, it all helps ;)
Markit
Why not donate direct?
Well meaning couple in Sri Lanka befriend the small son of a local fisher.
Gave boy a bike to help him get to school.
Carried on sending him and the family gifts from Germany when they got home.
Visited 2 years later: boy's father has given up fishing, sold bike and all other sent presents and donations and lived very well on cigarettes and fenny (sri lankan booze).
Moral of the story: Don't buy them fish, don't teach them how to fish, don't give them money - give your money to people who know what to do with it, maybe they "lose" some of it on themselves but if you are careful and do a bit of due diligence then it can work fine - ask Begonia (back to the forum after a long absence - good to hear you again girl  )
spicyayam
Begonia's foundation is the kind of thing which I would like to support through the forum. Still thinking exactly how to set it up. If people found a particular post or just the forum in general useful they could make a donation.

sorry to be an *ss, but people who need other people to make sure their money ends up where it's needed...donate for their own conciousness, to make themself feel a little better for what theyself have. It's not about caring for others who need help, if one would care that would mean theres a emotional bond, and as Over-It says they don't want to be confronted with tragic stories and establish an emaotional bond...just donate to a charity, deductable from incometax... two birds with one stone, right?
Personally I think the "hands on" approach is alot more effective, and you see what kind of change/impact you have on someone life...now ain't that a better reward then the tax-break'?
spicyayam
If you don't have the time or skills to help, I can't see what the problem you have with giving monetary donations. A "hands on" approach is good if you do have something to contribute.
I have a friend in Padang doing volunteer work, helping people to rebuild their homes. You can't get more hands on than that, but not everyone has the luxury to drop everything and do volunteer work.

Gilbert there are many organisations and charities that with money, resources and patronage can sort their own problems. They are not necessarily looking for house builders, they can do that themselves, what they need though is the materials. I don't mean to disrespect people that get out there and do the hard work themselves but to assume there is no personal credit being chased is not always true. The Peace Corps would be a perfect example. All those college kids trying to bulk up their resumes by getting out amongst the poor folk with their projects providing much amusement and bemusement to many of the projectees.
