Friendly regards to you,

Who would start an 'argument' and then answer the question himself???
I'm sure you can find many examples of this in the historical record.
If not much else in this thread, I'm glad that
KaBim has discovered something new:
Though I don't have much experience in forums, I do moderate another Expat Forum in Indonesia, and doing so I have access to the ISP of users... I was recently surprised to find out that the practise described by JohnnyCool is not that rare. You sometimes "meet" very weird people on the
http://WWW...
Very very true. I think you mean, as a forum moderator somewhere else, that you can see the
IP addresses of posters. In other words, their computer "address". ISPs generally don't reveal their customers' details. Usually hide them so all one gets is the ISP's address. Like most things on the internet, there are always ways to dig much deeper (if you can be bothered).
I've seen
some web-forums where an individual's IP address is plainly visible for all to see. That proves, "guarantees", protects nothing. If they want to, people can easily go to an internet cafe somewhere, a free wi-fi hotspot, create new accounts, and so on. And most moderators would be none the wiser. I mean by that that it's a useless and pointless exercise in the end.
I was recently amused to read that even
Tim Berner-Lees, the "creator" of the internet, got ripped-off trying to buy something on-line (a Christmas present, I think). What hope is there for the rest of us mere mortals security-wise?
(I
did write some more from here, and lost it. Suddenly had to log-in again. Possibly a good thing.)
I mentioned stuff like there are many "mad" people in the world. No shortage.
Some of them have internet access.
Some of them can "enlighten" us, others just prove that they are truly crazy.
Having "fun" on the internet is all well and good. Be as serious or flippant as you like. "Protect" your on-line "security" to the best of your ability, including your credit cards. Keep the "security software" you have installed as up to date as possible. Pray for the best.
Don't bother yourself
too much about who is "real" and who is not (unless you're transacting money), or have oodles of spare time.
Have
fun, help people less fortunate than yourselves, and get on with it. The "internet" is still the closest thing to so-called "democracy", in most countries.
This thread has probably run its natural course. More than enough. Can't everybody get back to things directly related to Bali?
