So you are a bit of a computer freak, and they released Windows Vista, and of course one or the other day it must be installed. When you finaly think its time to destroy you perfectly working Windows XP installation (afteral its by now an operating system where most problems are smoothed out), you call your local (RIMO Denpasar) computer dealer and ask "Sudah ada Windows Vista?" and they reply, "Belum", "Tapi sudah bisa beli di Singapore.....".Disappointment :(Now what? You ask some of the expats around if they go to Singapore in the near future, but no positives there...Ok, let download it, afterall you can use it for 30 (120 with a trick) days without registration...It took about 3 days (!) to (find and) download a whole official (semi legal) DVD with both 32-bits and 64-bits RTM versions of Windows Vista. Burned the DVD.Installed it on the 2 year old, but still modern laptop, and WOW, I like it. The Aero glass is fun, and it runs as fast as XP, or even faster.... It has all kind of new, sometimes annoying safety features, and all kind of gadgets like a sidebar etc. You can even put the Expat Forum rss feed on the side of your desktop...Of course you need to find new drivers, codecs, and the lot, and not all you need is there, but after a week of searching and experimenting you have a good working installation, (complete with Apache server and PHP), which no doubt will improve after manufacturers get the hang of Vista. It took Firefox until to a few weeks ago (v 2.0.0.2) to make things sort of right.Ok, lets update the normal PC to Vista 64 bits, after all that's the future, back up all thats important (and lets not forget anything, which I of course did). The world (or at least mine) is not yet ready for the 64 bits version of Vista I am afraid, to many things are not working as they should, have 32 bits stuff, which works only half the time.Back to 32 bits, where I can only utilize 3.2 GB of the 4 GB installed memory. In the mean time I needed some serial numbers for Vista, and my brother bought an Official Vista in the Netherlands, and just mailed me the serial. But I needed a second one, and this I ordered later, complete with the packaging and Official DVD's, from the Netherlands as well, came through DHL.I don't really need new hardware for Vista, I already have a very fast PC, but hee lets throw in a new processor (Intel E6700), but I couldn't get it in Indonesia, tried in Denpasar, Surabaya and Jakarta.Asked Matsaleh to get it in Oz before she came here, she tried hard in the last days, but didn't succeed....So finally I asked SteffandShaz to buy one in Brisbane, and DHL it to me, and it's now in Singapore on transit to Bali....Thanks Mats, SteffandShaz, my Brother, and of course Bill, the rest is up to the Gods.... :)http://www.bali-information.com/forumpics/balivista.jpg[/img](Oh and if you want Vista, you can borrow my DVD, you just need to buy a serial in another country and have it mailed to you as long as they don't have it here)

Interesting ditty:BUTWith most of the world agreeing that Vista deserves at least a year of observation before buying you seem to have made a premium effort to get hold of it.ALSOWith your shopping around and buying serial numbers etc here and there you may have noticed that the full versions (all of them) are available here in Bali.ANDWith windows XP Black now around giving all the pros and none of the cons of Vista freely available here in Bali WHY ON EARTH would you venture to Vista territory????Just a thought

I still need one for the Wife :)Oh to venture into Vista territory is sort of fun 8) The Intel thing is a processor....

Have you seen the Apple "cancel or allow" ad? I'm a Windows fan but I can see that Apple are doing a good job slagging off Vista.
Funny.Ah Apple vs Microsoft vs Linux, Nikon vs Canon etc etc I rather watch a good movie :?
Bert Vierstra
Yes, I have a D940 (3.2Ghz Presler) now....Should mean about 30% increase in performanceHave all the rest, 4GB 800mhz DDR2, I975X, 800GB Raid, ATI1900 and the 23inch WidescreenStill not good for a 5.9 overall Windows Experience Index, but a 5.6 5.9 5.9 5.8 5.9 will do until next year :)The faster processors are a bit steep...

It's starting to get harder to buy a PC without Vista loaded here in Perth in the retail outlets. There are some good sales going on for machines pre-loaded with XP.Our company will not be moving over to it for at least a year, too many issues when tested according to IT. Dont know what issues...half our laptops (which are coming up 3 yo and run XP Pro) only have 40GB HDDs, so I hear Vista needs that just for the OS.So Bert, what's good about Vista as a replacement for XP professional? Is it all gimmicks and gadgets? Or does it offer some benefits?
Bert Vierstra
Well besides the gadgets and cosmetics....(Which I think are important though)Security has improved for home users, not only regarding hacking and visuses, but also user errors. In a cooperate environment my guess is that there will not be so much difference regarding security, because it is arranged anyway.I thing I used with XP was Norton GoBack. It just meant you could go back in time and restore your computer to a point in time. A system like that has been build into Vista now. There are a lot of changes in the User Interface, and I am still getting used to it ;) , but no doubt will appreciate after a while.I am still discovering new things now and then.... and that will go on for a while...Read more here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_n ... dows_vistaBut indeed, a year or so, and Vista will be more attractive, because there will be more software (and hardware) available that will be tuned to Vista....

YES ALLEN --YOU ARE RIGHT APPEL MAKES A REALLY GOOD JOB. HERE IN STUTTGART START MANY USER TO CHANGE FROM INTELL TO APPEL COMPUTERS.WHY ..WE CAN RUN ALSO WINDOWS SYSTEMS ON SAME MASCHIENE.AND APPEL IS HERE ALSO THE TOP-TREND I NEVER GET AN VIRUS ON MY APPEL :-)
FreoGirl
I thing I used with XP was Norton GoBack. It just meant you could go back in time and restore your computer to a point in time.
XP Pro already does that. Well I'm not in any hurry most of the apps I use are not certified for Vista yet.
Bert Vierstra
No, XP doesn't do it, at least not like "that".Anyway, no you shouldn't be in a hurry.Although I must say that I like Vista already more then XP...
FreoGirl
Now you got me curious, because I use system restore quite alot in XP Pro when testing apps in beta.So I've researched what's changed in System Restore in XP Pro and Vista (the 4 versions that have it). According to Microsoft, "The main difference is that System Restore in Windows Vista makes use of Shadow Copy Backup instead of the file filter system used previously. As a result, the restore process is more efficient and robust."Any improvements are going to be good. And I like the scheduled backups, even in a network environment backing up user pcs can be a headache.
Bert Vierstra
Oh Yes the backup of Vista is nice (and fast), I have a USB drive and made a full backup in no time, which can be restored from the command prompt at boot time.Ideal for testing I would say.
Jimbo
Just installed Vista and nothing works. I have spent 3 days downloading updated drivers, updated software and still have a long way to go.It is pretty for sure and I am sthink when I get everything updated etc I might appreciate it but for now it is just frustrating GRRRRRRRR
macupblue
hallo JimboI think you knew..... not all older computer working with the new Vista SystemIt was also happend with some of my friends, 2 buy at last a new computer(orange) 3 Change to Appel and use her programs with windows xp with paraelles desktop http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
Jimbo
It is not the computer it is the software. So much has yet to catch up with vista
Bert Vierstra
Yes :(Take (Apple) Quicktime for Windows....It managed to crash Windows Vista that bad, that I had to recycle power to get the computer going again.. Now I have a hard disk error (raid parity error or something)I think its sabotage
macupblue
NEVER CHANGE A RUNNING SYSTEM !!!! You have to formatting your Disc with Vista Formatter !!!, At last you are controlled really well by big brother Microsoft, I hope you are agree when your Pc send each Program Key home to Bill Gates. At last it is cheaper to buy a second PC and install programs with Vista new step by step. You are not alone with the Vista problems.the shop are really busy here with angry and helpless user. Asta la Vista i hope you use your Vista PC not for serious Work.

Ok All.Watching the discussion it crossed my mind to perhaps ask you 2 distinguished gents Allan (as you come from my hometown) and Bert what you think about my latest escapade in ditching Microsoft in favour of Mac given all the nonsense in setting up the exchange server and Vista's entry to the market 2007 style, for my key personnel at our little biz.It seems that even Jimbo is suffering his fair share of problems in coming to terms with vista and I for one can foresee all the dramas of crossing over from XP to yet another "advancement" in the windows operating system having started with 3.1 some 15 years ago. Rather than trying to understand all the new stuff as Bert seems to so much enjoy ( not sounding nasty Bert ) as I know you love the challenge, it just sounds all too hard once again for me.So I'm going Mac. And so are my staff it seems. Here is my technical advisers (Cousin Barney) list of what I need to order Monday including his email word for word .. just to let you understand what sorta guy he is warts and all. Here it is.Cousin? It's your cousin?, cousin?!Hope you are well, well, well!Okay, here are all the quotes etc. I've divided them into MAC's, Server, Networking, and overall deployment plan.?ADSL and hosting is listed below. All the MAC's are in stock. the only tricky thing is we are expecting new MacPro's on 15.04.07. We'll have to come up with a solution until then, maybe hire you something for a month as it would be insane to buy a current machine when new ones are coming. Some of this will need explanation, so read it all, digest, vomit, and then give me a call.AD S LADSL wise, the only solution is Internode. There's no contract, they're 100% reliable, and we've got just about everyone we look after with them and no one is complaining.ADSL1+ is more expensive than ADSL2+ but few folks are offering it, and when ADSL2+ does come to Seaford, you can move.ADSL1+ 8000/384 10Gb - $89.95Connection Fee - $129.00ADSL2+ Modem - $199.00H O S T I N GPoint to Point - 1 Year $250.00Setup $75.00On site setup - approx 1 hour @ $155.00/hourIf you have any other questions or wish to discuss any aspect of the above, please do not hesitate to call.?As email often goes astray, a brief confirmation that this email has been received would be appreciated.Hope this helps!Best wishes,Barnicle Bee & Brother BuoyCousin MickSMITH CORPORATIONQUOTE DATE EACH TOTAL7850 15.03.07QTY PART NUMBER DESCRIPTIONITEM REFERENCE SPECIFICATIONSi M A C S1 KH MA471X/A APPLE iMAC INTEL 17" / 2.0GHz / 1GB / 160Gb / SUPERDRIVEFW / USB / iSIGHT / KEYBOARD & MOUSE $1795.00 $1795.001 KH MA472X/A APPLE iMAC INTEL 20" / 2.16GHz / 1GB / 250Gb / SUPERDRIVEFW / USB / iSIGHT / KEYBOARD & MOUSE $2195.00 $2195.001 KH MA473X/A APPLE iMAC INTEL 24" / 2.16GHz / 1GB / 250Gb / SUPERDRIVEFW / USB / iSIGHT / KEYBOARD & MOUSE $2895.00 $2895.001 AM AMI2GB-2700 2GB PC533RAM (2 X 1GB) $395.00 $395.00***LIFETIME EXCHANGE WARRANTEE***1 KH M8851FE/A iMAC APPLECARE EXTENDED WARRANTEE $239.00 $239.00S O F T W A R EIF REQUIRED1 TP MSA3724 MICROSOFT OFFICE 2004 $459.00 $459.001 MS TOASTKIT7 ROXIO TOAST TITANIUM 7 $139.00 $139.001 PI ALS014 MASTERJUGGLER PRO FONT MANAGEMENT $155.00 $155.001 TP ALD9431 ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE 2 UPGRADE FROM CS1 $845.00 $845.001 TP ALD9432 ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE 2 UPGRADE FROM PHOTOSHOP $1195.00 $1195.001 TP ALD9433 ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE 2 FULL $1855.00 $1855.001 PI ALS022 DISKWARRIOR 4.0 $155.00 $155.00W I N D O W SIF REQUIRED1 TP PA652 PARALLELS FOR MAC $139.00 $139.001 IM MSA675 WINDOWS XP PRO $299.00 $299.001 IM MSA675 NORTON ANTIVIRUS 2006 $199.00 $199.00L A B O U R1 MM S/UP iMAC OS X SETUP / CONFIGERATION / OPTIMISATION (PER MAC) $450.00 $450.001 MM MAIN ADDITIONAL ON SITE HOURS @ $155.00 / HOURNOTES1. Thanks AllanWill make this quick as I just hear the start of the F1 out the window down at Albert Park (we are based in town) and am watching it live on the big screen ... another beautiful day it is here in Melbourne with very blue sky / sunny mild conditions for a great international race.No we are not in the design / multi media business in that sense, although we are in the process of creating / designing software and technology with my partners in Java Indonesia. My field is road transport and storage and our past and current set up is Microsoft with 10 users for our small business. You are right about people claiming Mac to be far superior and I have heard it everywhere over the past 10 years at least. So being at the 11th hour with the implementation of the new exchange server I felt I was lucky to run into Cousin Barney who persuaded me to swing over to Mac in the admin and allow my best new Desktop Pc's to hang off the end in our No1 and No2 warehouses with the notebooks for the key personnel there too.On the back up side we will be installing 2 x Maxtor One Touch II 500GB external hard drives. This will of course provide us with a full terabyte for data storage. I will also take Barney's advice on the new Mac Pro's and wait for their arrival in April. The 17 inch screens will probably be a little on the small side for my staff, however they are generally handling accounting and spreadsheet data for that purpose. I myself will have a second 22 inch rectangular Dell screen as I like to have lotsa space for my second favorite thing to do photography. My daughter will probably/definitely put in a request for more screen space as she too is developing the bug for sniping with her new Canon EOS 30D. Hearing Bert tackling Vista has made me sit up and take notice as I know he has a great brain for this sorta stuff and watching and listening to you both and your exchanges prompted me to ask what you thought of what I am doing. I feel that I have made the right choice although only time will tell. My PA's, general manager, Ops and warehouse managers are all PC educated. We will be testing and measuring as we move along over the next 4 to 8 weeks so I will let you know the upshot in terms of ease and problems that may come. In the meantime Bert if you can let us all know how you go with Vista and Jimbo as well, I would be greatly appreciative.Heading down the track via Clarendon St now to get the wife's favorite wheelie bin suitably arranged, to stand upon and me swinging from my usual tree ... binos in hand to peer over the fence for an hour's atmosphere with Mr. Coultard and the others at this year's Australian Grand Prix.Dasha

For my well running advertising agency with digital-fotostudio and pre press section, i installed 25 macs without any extended warranty or online help.for my network i use also 3 raid (9 terra) and 1 ftp server with windows xp,i never get problems with my servers,to recover discs by running raid system was all times easy. But for my servers i need support and pay 100 euro for 1 hour onlinesuport. To install 1 more mac in my network i need 2 hours.30 min to open the packet and install on desktop and 90 to install the software. each of us manage his own macstation. after 2 hours i catch money. at time we run parallel 1 linuxserver it is our future network system. Vista is installed on 1 older pc to see all the update problems by ourself and 1 new configuratet PC to see where are th problems but we dont work serious with vista until now.we are also waiting for the new macs and the new system and rent 3 mac for 6 month.....The company is own by my kids now coz i like to move to bali..maybe i get fast internet and can work there also connectet by ftp server but i am not sure with internetspeed in bali
