Hi BaliLife,
Our friend has an Indonesian restaurant in North Van. We haven't eaten there yet, but have heard good things about it. I'll send you a pm with more information later today.
There's also an Indonesian-style Thai Away Home on Cambie. However, I'm afraid it's not that great. Like you, we tend to go to Banana Leaf (Broadway) or Tropika (Cambie) when we're in the mood for something Indonesian.
Yeah, it's too bad that Bali Restaurant closed. They used to do catering for the consulate. I wonder what happened...

hi ni luh ann,
actually my wife is from surabaya.. and the other one's escape me, but do a search for vancouver and they should come up - i'm not sure they're balinese either, just intending to move there.. can u sggest any really good indo restaraunts here?? my wife and i can't find one for the life of us.. the one on commercial (i won't reference it's name out of respect) is not too good... there was an awesome one on broadway called bali something - it was fantastic, however, unfortunately after only going there once, the second time we returned, it had shut down.. there's also a bad one in kerrisdale.. are we missing one that's really good?? the closest thing to a good indo food place here sadly seems to be banana leaf - which is increddible, but malaysian food (only some dishes slightly resemble indo food)..

Hello everyone,
Like the Title says, I'm new to this Forum. I'm an American citizen who will be retiring next year (2017). I plan on visiting Bali in the off season to see if it "works" for me, I have high hopes I can blend in. I appreciate all the help here on the Forum.
Thank you for allowing me to join,
sherm
Welcome Jiker69, may I call you Jike? Sure why not...
Read through the threads almost any question you have have been addressed before, so read on.
Your statement "see if it works for me" is a great start. Come with an open mind and I think you'll do well.

Haha, "polish your beer drinking abilities. I must admit I think my first obstacle may be my taste for Double or Triple IPA's. I don't think Indonesia brews hoppy beers.

Welcome jiker69 we hope this forum helps :)

Hi,
My husband and I are looking to retire in Bali and are currently doing our homework, one question we do have is what kind of volunteer work is available?
Regards
Mary

Welcome Mary. People do volunteer to help charitable foundations (yayasan), but be aware that this could be regarded by the government as work which is not permitted by visitor visas.

Thanks for the info ronb.

Anyone wishing to "give something back" or volunteer in a 3rd world orphanage should read this and take it very much to heart:

Typical Markit "advice"! Yes, Markit, shit happens, and there are always people milking the system, wherever you go. Too many selfish people adopt your attitude of suspecting everybody's integrity, as an excuse not to get involve with anything to help.

Markit. If you could stop for one day hitting the bottle, maybe you could go out of your den and tell us where these rip-off places which are in Bali?
