So what should I do?
Having lived here on & off for most of the last 10 years, I can only suggest that you keep giving where you see fit, but try to make it productive rather than cash handouts. If you have bought the family sewing machines, then maybe your "donation" can be to add to that, give them material etc. etc.
We get asked soooo many times for financial assistance, but we are refusing on the grounds that we can't save the world, and have plenty of mouths to feed as it is. Plus, we aren't all that flush with spare cash anyway.
The last request we received was dissappointing.
From a long time friend, who contacted (by SMS) us the day before his wife went into hospital to have a baby.
It read something like, "Ibu, my wife go to hospital tomorrow, I need your donation"
OK, he was obviously short of funds, but we felt he had left his run a bit late, and maybe, just maybe, he could have tried working for a living, rather than just hanging about. If he had asked us a few months before, we would have given him a temp job so that he could save up some cash.
This may sound hard, but we have so much out in loaned funds at the moment it's a little crazy.
We may review our stance if any of the loaned funds eventually finds it's way back to us....
