Hi thereDo I need a certain Visa to buy a car in my name? Thanks
sakumabali
Hi Akawin you gonna need a residence status (KITAS, KITAP) any other visa won't do it...

A foreigner can NOT buy a NEW car in his or her name, makes no difference with Kitas or Kitap.
Fred2
Bali only???

Even an Indonesian needs to have a Bali KTP to buy a new car in Bali. You can go to Jakarta and buy a new car with a Kitas/Kitap and keep in Bali as a "B" registered car. Only issue is you will need to re-apply the registration in Jakarta every year.

Going down the road (pun intended) of buying a motorcycle, baru, here in Bali, today I visited a dealer to haggle for a purchase thinking that I may be able to do so in my name when my retirement visa is approved. No such luck. If I try after 5 years of holding said visa then I may. Oh well, time for plan B. No drama.I'm looking forward to taking Markit's lead and visiting far and wide. :)

I'm sure the bank will then be the rightful owners until you have completed the payment of the hire-purchase. By then it becomes a second-hand bike to be registered by you. Worth a try!

Thanx davita, I will explore that option as I was only considering a cash payment on a new bikeSo using this scenario I might be able to take a loan from my Indo' bank for the purchase and then pay off the loan once all legal documents have been ratified? Maybe a few weeks.Thereby purchasing the 2nd hand bike from the bank?Or must it be a hire purchase agreement?I have been told that if I make a hire/purchase deal, as opposed to a bank loan, then that is a locked in figure of re-payment over a fixed term thus ensuring a return of profit to the lender and the requisite insurance company.Like everything, these things can be a minefield so I appreciate your input.Cheers mate. Plan B is holding sway at the mo'.
Fred2
I use the bike shop repayment plans. The bike is fully covered, insurance and service. You can bargain on the rate, deposit and repayments.
Markit
Steve find a trusty Balinese to buy the bike new for you (saving all the HP and interest BS) for cash. After a week get him to make the bike over to you (sell) as a used bike. Job done.

Ref: post #8I don't know the details Steve as I'm only saying what I've been told by family and staff....but I think Fred2 has the answer. I believe that it is a hire purchase agreement to ensure everone gets a piece of the financial arrangement but, if you negotiate in your own interest like minimising the repayment period or, extending but at the lowest HP rate, or as Fred says, include insurance (mandatory) and service........you might also circumvent the ownership issue.Having said all the above I now wonder if a similar arrangement can be made for a new car....anyone have ideas?Edit:Markit posted just ahead of me so I didn't see.My friend did that and his nominee now not only owns his million dollar home in Canggu but his new Toyota Fortuner as well. I will see him tomorrow night and ask about the idea of having the car sold back to him as a 2nd hand car.

Steve Rossell
Thanx Fred2 for the idea but without the correct visa I still can't purchase a new bike, so my plan B is as Markit suggests but I hadn't thought of the buy back 2nd hand from my trusted Balinese buyer. Top tip, thanx Markit.

for your info , I just bought a new car on a wni kitap .

lol, don't think so Markit. To my Indonesian fiance's consternation, when "we" bought a scooter from Honda, it had to be a HP deal with Honda.

Bali only???[/QUOTE]Yes my understanding is that Bali is different in this way. In Indonesia there is now a higher vehicle tax if you have more than 1 vehicle. I believe that in Java they use street addresses and count the number of cars at that address. But in Bali (where street addresses don't work very well) they decided to use the family certificate (Kartu Keluarga) and count the number of cars connected with one KK. So an expat with a KITAS/KITAP usually is not listed on a KK - so that's the roadblock. I don't hink the KK is an issue for motorbikes - but not sure.
tel522
being a wni sponsored kitap im on the kk , we had to present foto copy kk passport kitap and ktp , no problem

The Bali Government decided to restrict car ownership in Bali to only those that were Bali residents so decreed only Bali KTP holders could purchase a new vehicle. There was no intent to restrict ownership of new cars to Kitas/Kitap holders....but most foreigners do not apply for a KTP (Orang Asing)...which is available.Tel522 has indicated he/she has a KTP and was thus able to buy a new car. I'm not sure the same restriction applies to buying new motorcycles/scooters.
