There has been a lot of local media in the last couple of days about the north Bali airport. Koster is saying commitment is stronger and looking to release final decision in the new year with plans to be operational by 2024. Has anyone living in the north heard anything?
spicyayam
They have been talking about it for years and years. I don't think anyone pays too much attention to these reports.
mugwump
Spicy is correct, but it is also evident that this island can't forever contain its sole focus on the South. Tourists can't be deluded from all the insufferable traffic problems and attendant issues to think Bali is going to continue this mirage without change. There is too much left undeveloped to continue pounding the same drum. When this change happens is anyone's guess, but it is inevitable or tourists will wander elsewhere. They are pretty damned fickle, and other destinations are beckoning.

"...operational by 2024..."? Ha-ha. It'd be lucky to get off the ground, (no pun), by 2034.
Not "lucky" - a misguided miracle, perhaps, if Bali can survive that long.

With a new destination that includes some forward thinking that can accommodate greater traffic in the future there quite possibly could be something more appealing than what currently exists.

Imma not in bali yet but if sydneys second airport at badegy creek is any precident...there is many many more years to go

Bali doesn't need "greater traffic". It's struggling with what it's got already, with no end in sight.
"Forward thinking" here sounds like an oxymoron to me. Hope I'm wrong.

Badgerys Creek and the proposed North Bali airport aren't quite the same thing.
But I agree with you in that there's many more years, probably for either of them to become functional (or even built).

So, you really think an airport in the North is going to solve the traffic problems in the South? I doubt it.
More likely the traffic problems will be moved around until there's nowhere else to move them to. What then?
"Change" can be good, bad or medium. I see little evidence that many of the changes so far have made much of a difference.
How's the proposed Round-Bali-Railway brain-fart going? Maybe by 2054?
Balifrog
Bali need better and more roads, not another airport.
Start with building a 4 lane expressways from DPS to Gilmanuk and DPS to Ubud and the North.
Sure more usefull to the general community than a 2nd airport.
And have some direct flights from Banyuwangi to DPS, without needing to pass through Surabaya !

I have studied this problem very seriously for almost 34 years and I have come to the inescapable conclusion that the unique solution will require the WHOLE Island to be cemented over.
Markit
Since it seems that dire warnings of trash, rabies, volcanoes and traffic are unable to sway the masses of tourists looking for "paradise" I don't really understand what use the second airport will have as they will land there and immediately head for Kuta. Lemmings anyone?

C'mon :) nah ain't that serious yet. Problem is still corruption & nepotism. Hah they have an airport in the south? We want another in the north & east & west. Investors will pay! Ain't our money anyway! But I need my guys in the north (Pastika f.e.) to have sth to lean on. Investment strategy? None. Why? We need it! Let the stupid bule pay for it. WE NEED STREETS (east-west, north-south) not NEW AIRPORTS! We need LESS CARS NOT MORE (look China, Singapore etc).
Indonesia doesn't build cars with 260 million people! Why not start building eco friendly e bikes & cars?
Please :)

That's about it. Problem is: who wants to drive 3-4 hours through shitty streets up & down, up & down to Kuta AFTER sitting in a plane for hours? Not one passenger.
2nd problem (and I still believe this project never sees daylight): you can't tell airlines where to land. "Hey we have a great new airport in the north Singapore Airlines?" "Thanks so much for the offer but Ngurah Rai is still our choice"
Use money from government? Nah. Use money from foreign investors? YEAHH!! But who's gonna do it?

For me, Bali has a magic that doesn't exist anywhere else. Regardless of the traffic congestion and everything else I will never stop coming back. I suspect many other people feel the same. No matter how great Vietnam, Cambodia or any other alternative destination is, it still isn't Bali.
mugwump
No one has disagreed with that Sam, but you aren't a tourist.
mugwump
You have realistically depicted the quagmire that exists in South Bali. As it stands it will only get worse, and then the tourists begin to find more inviting scenarios.
Myanmar, if possibly ever overcoming their domestic problems was well on its way to creating a very inviting tourist destination, and places like Vietnam have already created good highways, access points, and avenues to sites of interest (Da Nang being a prime example). Cambodia, Thailand etc. will pick up the slack if Bali can't offer solutions.
The mystique of Bali is going to wear thin and lose its seduction, so it must adapt before that happens. It isn't just an airport, but all that goes with it including the shopping, hotels and reasonable access to the necessities required. VISION, not just continuance of the same old shit!
It will cost a lot more to try to fix this broken down catastrophe that currently exists than to go afield before losing out on what still attracts the tourist short-sighted eye.

Bali is VERY lucky to have Australia in proximity and therefore a certain "guaranteed" stream of visitors from there.
It is too far from Europe compared to Thailand, Vietnam with rather expensive flights to really attract big numbers of visitors from there. It is an small island with less variety of places than Thailand, Vietnam etc...
Without the Aussies, you know who the main visitors would be now and in the future.....
Just my humble view after 1 year.

Don't want to be rude but I wouldn't consider that "Lucky". Balis is the playground of the world (at least of Asia). Australians are one of the nicest people on earth but there are so many - well let's say "other" - Australians out there. MMHHH I wouldn't mind if Australia and China is not so much in theoretical proximity and - for egoistic reasons :))) closer to Europe ( as I'm European)
and
don't tell Indonesians that they can consider themselves lucky because of Australian tourists. Ever heard of local tourism? barely 25 million vs 260 million?
sakumabali
yes indeed...Toyota etc. are all foreign car brands. I meant INDONESIAN eco friendly cars. If I go to Domino's to order a Pizza I wouldn't know if a Carlos or Luigi made it for me. China just want to exploit the resources (like they do already in Africa) and BORROW (ha!) money if necessary.
They don't ask bothersome questions regarding child labor etc like the silly europeans would do...a true partner (in crime) for the rich & mighty elites!
