Sorry
Roy was posting on another thread when I wrote mine.
Thanks for the info. Still we do not have much information about damage or any deaths.

Well, it’s not good news coming out of Yogya, to say the least. As with most disasters in Indonesia, it takes quite a while before the full extent of the event, as with the tsunami, to become clear.
Cell phone communication is down now as well...likely taken over by the resources most in need. I haven’t been able to reach my mate since our first conversation very early this AM...(within the hour after the quake), but his news was good at that time, and being a most resilient Ozzie, I have little concern now for his well being.

Check Jakarta Post in "Latest News". They're reporting 211 deaths and many other casualties.
Roy
Mats, as usual, local Indonesian TV is well behind the eight ball. CNN and BBC are reporting lots more casualties. Metro TV, at 8:30 this morning (Bali time) (which was almost two hours after the event), had nothing on this story.
CNN and BBC both had full crews already in place in Yogya covering the Merapi story, so the best coverage, by far, was on their networks but only by chance.
Roy
One thousand, three hundred are now feared to be among the dead as a result of this mornings earthquake in cental Java, as just reported by the BBC.
Roy
Latest toll of the dead is now reported at 2,275...a very dramatic increase in just the last few hours. Thousands of injured are also being reported. Widespread destruction is also being reported, especially in the southern regions of Yogya. Very sad.
It has also been reported that Borobudur and Prambanan have suffered damage from this earthquake.

i'm very sorry to hear about this earthquake and its disastrous consequences for many people.
i have lived some time in a village near jogyakarta and felt very welcome during all that time and met a lot of friendly and open people, and it makes me feel sad to think about what might have happened to them.
the god's are very unjust, sometimes.

Dear All
Words cannot describe how upset I am with the tragedy struck Yogykarta and the areas surround it. My heart goes out to my fellow Yogyakartan and Javanese. My mother is from Yogyakarta. I have a lot of family and strong connections to the place……Bali is home but I have always considered Yogykarta as my second home.
I called my little brother in Bali who has managed to speak to my family in Yogyakarta through mobile. Fortunately they are safe from the tragedy and my ancestral home, built in the Dutch era, which is very precious to me as my grandparents entrusted it to me and my cousins to look after, has also survived this earthquake.
They are still scared in the aftermath of this quake. However we still can’t get in touch some families outside Yogyakarta i.e. Klaten, Wonogiri, etc which is quite concerning.
As I wrte this 2,517 (Skynews) reported to be killed in this tragedy…. my thoughts are with the people in this difficult time…..
With deepest sympathy
Ni Luh and family
Roy
Ni Luh, saya mengerti. It seems the hardest hit area, and with the most casualties, is in Bantul, just south of Yogya. Klaten (from Metro news) does not appear to have been too hard hit. I haven't heard anything on Wonogiri, which probably is good news.
Eri and I can certainly understand your great concern, and if you would like Eri to try throughout the night to contact your relatives not yet heard from, she would be very happy to do that. Just PM us with phone numbers and names.
Keep in mind though that communications, even by cell phone, are limited, due to damage on that infrastructure.
We understand how frustrating this must be for you, being so far away. But, you have friends here willing to help in anyway possible. We wish you the best of news.

Dear Oom Roy and Ibu Eri
Thank you for your kind offer, it was very kind of you both and much appreciated. Our families in Bali and elsewhere will keep trying to contact them and some of them are planning to go to the area to assist our families there.
Kind regards
Ni Luh
Roy
OK Ni Luh, and good luck, we are all hoping that your news is good.
Yes, Edan, it is his factory. I posted about this on the other string dealing with this tragedy.
edan
my friend in Klaten says that local radio is reporting there will be another larger quake sometime tonight, according to an Australian quake expert.
at the very least, this reporting will create nothing but more fear and panic. but if its accurate enough, where do you find the middle ground between informing people and not flaming hysteria??

Ni Luh (never imagined for a minute I'd be writing to you under the cloud of this latest disaster).
The situation in Jogja and surrounds is still unfolding. The latest death toll is approaching 3,000. It'll probably be many more. As far as I can tell, Bantul is one of the hardest hit areas (2,000+ dead there alone). I have a particular fondness for Bantul as I built a house there not too long ago and lived there. I just saw some footage of Jl Raya Bantul and it looked like every building on both sides of the road has been destroyed. My house, which I sold several months ago, is no longer there.
Most of my Sundanese friends who've been living in Jogja have managed to get out. Some are still missing. I'm still not sure about my friends in Solo. We got some SMSs from Jogja a couple of hours ago.
I sincerely pray that your family members there have managed to escape from this latest wrath of Nature.
Roy
Edan, no, my Ozzie friend isn't married...and no kids that he is aware of anyway!
That false report you heard about may have been an effective way of keeping folks whose homes have been damaged but not destroyed from sleeping in them last night.
My friend is stuck in Semarang, trying to catch a quick flight to Surabaya, before coming on home to Bali. As reported on the news this morning, flights in and out of central Java, as well as buses and trains are all full with folks and supplies being moved about. Hopefully he will be back in time for me to have lunch or dinner with tomorrow.
His biggest concern right now is for his employees and their families. Once the recovery and rescue efforts are completed, he will be returning to Yogja to rebuild his business and restore an economic stability for his employees.
