I use a Ku Band Newskies Sat.
Installed by a Jakarta company, and licensed by a local ISP
The Jakarta Company has plans for Bali, I think..

Hi Bert, congratulations are in order! You know I work with satelite but my speed is only 64k and I pay 1 juta per month after the installation cost.

$ 1,000 a month is a bit rich for me. Got Blueline 3 weeks ago, and I must say it is very good. Usually see speeds of 200kbps. Looking at my usage so far, it looks like my monthly cost is going to be around Rp 800,000. Perhaps most important, Skype works perfect. Saving myself around $ 150 on International phone calls so far... Peter.

Oh, not bad. At the moment here in Java 'surfing' with the enourmous speed of 31,2kbps. Do you have to pay by the hour, abonnement, fixed .....
Bert Vierstra
Well, I heard some bad things about blueline sometime ago... maybe they are solved...
patatje
Could not check their prices..... Website under construction and mistakes at some pages.

Based on my past experience, the bandwith is most likely only downstream, what about upstream? I remember channel-11 had a great downstream for a cheap price, but most of the time I was not able to upload (0.0kbps)
Peter K
I am on their residential package
http://www.blueline.co.id/HTML/residential.html .
When I upload to a server in the UK, I get around 200kbps, sometimes 400kbps... Peter

Forgot to welcome you Peter....
Hows life in Canggu???
sander
Peter,
Are we talking bits or bytes here? If you're browser says 400kbps that are bytes which would meaning that you have 3.2Mbit upstream which is impossible for me to believe.
Even if it are bytes the site is only talking about 128Kbps downstream (16KiloBytesPerSecond).
There is a lot of info on the site which is simply not true such as :
*In Bali the average speed of a dial-up connection (if you can get connected) is 10 Kbps ranging as low as 3 Kbps.
Also a lot of strange things like being related with starnet in america while the site says:
* Blueline is backed by several prominent venture capitalists from Europe. (I assume they mean north america)
I do not trust this company and I wonder Mister Peter, if you are related to, or happen to be the owner of this company.
Peter K
Thanks Bert. Life is just fine in Canggu! Moved to Bali in May. Export some bits and pieces, but mostly just enjoy myself.
Sander,
Bits. Use a program called DU Meter to keep and eye on the speed. As far as I know, kbps refers to kilo bits per second and kB/s refers to kilo bytes per second.
I don't know what other people are getting with dialup, but when I was on it, DU Meter was showing around 15 to 20 kbps, if it worked at all.
Sander, Mister Peter is not related to Blueline, and although he would not mind owning it, does not...
sander
Peter,
OK sorry about asking if you are related to or the owner of blueline. Yes kbps refers to bits. If I used telkom, speeds are between 25Kbps and 45 Kbps.
It's an intresting story but there to expensive for me. I pay now 3.25 million per month for 64Kbps and no data limit, blueline charges 2.9 million for 128 but got a data limit at 2,5GB every gb extra is 1 Million, guess I would pay arround 6 million per month for this.

bert , not to brag , the phone company just completed a fiber optic network in my area . i just signed up for a fiber optic modem , they say ten times faster then my cable modem , and 10.00 (us) cheaper per month two ...sorry for bragging
