After some people struggled a week with Satellite Dishes and all kind of boxes, anf they travelled 2 times to Jakarta (by plane) and once to Malang (by car);
I finally can surf the internet at light speed (so it seems to me :) ) through a Pakistani IP address and a Server in Hong Kong.
I am the proud owner of a nice white dish on my roof...

Dear Bert
Good news!
I am used to very quick internet in the UK and was a bit worried about when I get to Bali for doing my daily surf.
What is the provider's name (contact info), speed, costs and how does it work?
Many thanks
Ni Luh
Tommy
Yeah that would be intresting. Let us know. 8)

Hi Bert - is it a 2 way satellite link or the phone line up and broadcast down system?
Bert Vierstra
Two way, 512kbits down, 128kbits up
And I will have to change my software, so I am not from Pakistan anymore...

My line in the uk is 2 megabits up and down. Here in Saudi we use a satellite dish a metre and a half wide and I doubt if I ggt 28k.......... when it works. But its something.
As an aside my Television here has a 2 metre wide dish with 3 LNB's and a thousand channels to chose from 90% of which are in arabic 7% in French or German which still leaves quite a few in English. There is suprisingly, a free porn channel which comes from Nile Sat. I never watch this of course.

I will inform you later about this, I want to put something together for the guys who installed it for me, its not cheap if you just use it yourself, but very good value if you can share it with a few people.

Better still ask them to assign an 8 IP address block (/29) to you and then get it registered with APNIC to Hong Kong or Indonesia. Mine was originally Hong Kong but some well meaning engineer re-registered it to Bali. Quite a lot of websites, particularly e-commerce ones, put invisible but significant restrictions on visitors from Indonesia and most likely Pakistan. Hong Kong gets a lot more latitude.

Yes, seems a good suggestion, I still have to figure some things out anyway...
I have a proxy in between, which I don't like, f.i.
I see you use speedcast... two way ku band, shared?
Lou
No they don't use Ku it's C band which means a humungous antennna sitting on a reinforced concrete base; definitely not something to put on the roof. With Ku you should get better tolerance on the antenna alignment which is a real issue with C - even fractionally off results in loss of carrier when it rains or even in heavy overcast. It isn't shared but I wish it was from a cost perspective. Their service is however excellent both from the Jakarta and Hong Kong guys and I have no complaints at all.

Yes but what is the actual speed you're getting,
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
Bert Vierstra
470.8 kilobits per second
Communications 470.8 kilobits per second
Storage 57.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 17.8 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad
During this test, one other PC, from my wife was online, as well did I run various messengers at the time...
Tommy
That's pretty good. Here in Sweden we have 0'5mbit up to 24mbit connections. I used to have 10mbit but recently downgraded to 2mbit since i'm usually here in Sweden for short periods of time. I will eventually set "something" back in Bali but i havn't figured out just what. I'm rather focused on having a 24/7 connection without any monthly fees.
rafalution
yes not too bad at all, can i ask how much it costs?
Sergio
I saw the thread title and almost fell off my chair!
Should have know better then to think it was with a public ISP... :(
I happy for you Bert! Still worried about my business however when I get there as I spend like 8 hours a day online... errrrr... (ya I know I have to find a better life!)

CONGRATS BRET! ...we have cable modems here in the USA . I guess its another example of what i take for granted ..go down load your ass off !!! enjoy
balijeff
Welcome,
Yes, you can get these speeds in Indonesia. Im not so sure about Bali though.
Well thats a T1/E1 line and its wicked expensive. You'll be north of 3000 US a month Im sure. And it may or may not carry a quota (usage limit).
Latency? Plenty of that...at least compared to US or UK standards. I gather you are needing web conference...
Any clue if speeds of at least 1Mbps could be achieved on the island?
Bert, do you experience any problem with your satellite connection when there is bad weather
My hardware can go upto 2 Mbps.... 1 Mbps down 256 up = 1000 USD month
Yesterday it was very cloudy and raining, no problems.. I looked at my "DB's" and they went down 1 DB only...
My guess is that its only with very heavy weather it goes down, for a while...
My "pings" are 700-900 ms

hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and quite new to the many charms of Bali.
I visited Bali last october with my family for a beach holiday and will be back at the end of december for a 3-week holiday.
When back my wife and I will spend more time visiting the island with the objective of assessing if we could make the big move.
I have an activity that requires the use of the internet but with a reliable high speed connection of at least of 1Mbps with minimisation of latency (downstream and upstream).
The telkomspeedy broadband solution with speeds of 384 kbps / 64 kbps doesn't work for me.
Bert's solution is better but still falls short of what I need.
Any clue if speeds of at least 1Mbps could be achieved on the island?
Bert, do you experience any problem with your satellite connection when there is bad weather?
Thank you
balijeff
Bert,
I know you already told me but who is your provider again?
Jeffrey
